Night hangs over a mountain road, cold and still. A lone lantern sways outside a small waystation, its light trembling across wet stones.
Kamado Tanjiro steps into the glow, wooden box strapped to his back, Nichirin sword at his side. He pauses as if catching a scent on the wind.
From inside the station, a chair scrapes hard against the floor. A man in a travel-stained cloak rushes out, then stops short when he sees Tanjiro.

The Innkeeper
You there, boy. Do not go any farther. Someone vanished in the woods, and the dogs will not come near the path.
A second figure appears behind him, a young woman with a bundle clutched tight to her chest. She keeps her eyes on the dark tree line.

The Young Woman
If you are a swordsman, please. My brother went up the hill an hour ago. He has not returned.
The road ahead turns sharply into the pines.
Then a low, dragging sound rolls down from the forest, slow and deliberate. The lantern flame gutters. Both strangers step back as something moves between the trees.

The Innkeeper
If you are going in, move now. If not, tell us what you see before it reaches the road.

Investigate the missing person in the woods
“I use Total Concentration: Constant”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Kamado Tanjiro draws in one steady breath, and the night sharpens around him. The road, the lantern, the pines, every sound seems to settle into a single beat.

Kamado Tanjiro
My breathing is steady.
His shoulders ease, his stance quiets, and the restless edge in his body disappears. The sword stays ready, but his focus becomes calm and unbroken.

The Innkeeper
...Good. Whatever is out there, do not let it pull your attention apart.

The Young Woman
Can you hear it too? It keeps coming from the trees.
The dragging sound swells once, then stops. From the black line of pines, something watches without stepping into the lantern light.

The Innkeeper
If you are going, decide now. The road will not stay clear for long.
“I go in, using my hightened senses to find the opponent”
FAILURE (Terrible Perception, rolled +0)
Kamado Tanjiro steps off the road and into the pines. The lantern light falls away behind him, and the forest closes around his breathing.

Kamado Tanjiro
The sound is ahead, but the trees break it apart.
He slows, listening. Needles hush underfoot, branches whisper overhead, yet the dragging trace never settles into one clear direction.
A rough line in the dirt catches his eye, then disappears under roots and shadow.
Kamado Tanjiro angles toward it, but the trail forks into damp earth, fallen bark, and too many old prints to trust.

The Innkeeper
Did you find anything?
From deeper in the black trees, something shifts again, just far enough to turn the whole wood into a question.

“I head twords the shifting”
SUCCESS (Terrible Perception, rolled +3)

Kamado Tanjiro follows the disturbed line where it bends between roots, and the drag mark sharpens into a trail instead of a rumor.
The ground here is pressed flat by something heavy, then scraped sideways, as if a body or bundle was pulled hard around the trunks.

Kamado Tanjiro
The path turns right after the roots.
He steps in that direction, and the forest answers with a faint rustle ahead, no longer hidden by distance.
A pale shape catches through the needles, low to the ground and half concealed by a fallen branch.
Kamado Tanjiro closes the last stretch without losing the line, coming up to the source of the sound.
Something lies just beyond the branch, and whatever dragged it here is still close enough to stir the dark.
“Is it a demon”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 50)

Kamado Tanjiro
The scent is unmistakable, a cloying, metallic rot that clings to the air like a shroud.
The pale shape shifts, revealing a jagged, inhuman claw hooked into the fabric of a discarded cloak, and the unmistakable, rhythmic clicking of teeth echoes from the shadows.
“Water breathing first form: striking tide!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Weapon Mastery, rolled +3)

Tanjiro drives forward in one clean breath, the water-sure arc of his blade flashing from the undergrowth.
The pale shape jerks out into view, then splits, cloak and claw thrown apart by the strike as the forest floor sprays with dark stains.
A hidden passage behind the roots gapes open where the thing had been dragging its prize, a narrow way descending into black earth.

The Innkeeper
You found it...?

The Young Woman
There was something under the roots all along.
From the torn cloak, a small wooden tag tumbles free and skids to a stop in Tanjiro's reach, marked with the missing person's name.

“I run through the passage”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Tanjiro drops the tag into his sleeve and commits to the opening without hesitation.
He slips under the roots, boots skimming damp earth, then drives forward into the narrow passage as the forest noise thins behind him.
The tunnel swallows him, packed soil brushing his shoulders, the air turning cold and wet around his breath.

The Innkeeper
Tanjiro! Can you hear us in there?

The Young Woman
Please, don't go too far!
Their voices fade at the entrance while ahead, the passage bends downward into a deeper dark, where a faint scrape answers from below.
