Arjun grew up studying traditional Indian and Chinese martial arts under a reclusive master who emphasized patience above all else. Rather than overwhelming opponents, he learned to slowly dismantle them with repeated attacks to the same vulnerable areas. He rarely appears aggressive, preferring to let opponents defeat themselves through frustration. Every exchange subtly weakens their body until they realize too late they've lost the ability to fight effectively.

GOAL & MOTIVE

Arjun Rao was born in Mysuru, India, into a family of physicians whose lives revolved around understanding the human body. His father specialized in orthopedic surgery, his mother in neurology, and discussions at the dinner table frequently drifted toward anatomy, healing, and the extraordinary complexity hidden beneath ordinary movement. As a child, Arjun possessed an unusual fascination with animals. While other children feared snakes, he found them beautiful. Not because they were dangerous. Because they wasted nothing. Every movement served a purpose. Every strike emerged only when necessary. He spent hours quietly observing cobras, rat snakes, vipers, and pythons from safe distances, sketching their movements in notebooks that eventually filled entire shelves. When he was eleven years old, his parents sent him to recover from a serious respiratory illness at a remote mountain monastery in the Western Ghats, believing the cleaner air would improve his health. There he met an elderly martial artist known simply as Master Liang, a Chinese immigrant who had lived in India for decades after leaving his homeland as a young man. Liang practiced an obscure lineage of Snake Kung Fu. At first he refused to teach the boy. Instead, he instructed Arjun only to watch. For nearly six months. No punches. No stances. No techniques. Only observation. The impatient children left. Arjun remained. Eventually Liang smiled. “Good,” he said. “Now your eyes are finally beginning to learn.” Training under Liang proved unlike anything Arjun expected. Physical conditioning mattered far less than awareness. Anatomy mattered more than strength. Students memorized muscles, tendons, nerves, and joints alongside martial techniques, learning not merely how to strike but why specific targets mattered. Liang insisted that true Snake Kung Fu required compassion. “If you understand how to break a body,” he often said, “you must understand how precious it truly is.” For nearly eighteen years Arjun trained beneath the old master, eventually becoming his final disciple. When Liang died peacefully in his sleep at the age of ninety-three, he left behind almost nothing. One small cottage. Several handwritten journals. A jade serpent pendant. And two faded wrist wraps. Arjun inherited all of them. For several years afterward, he traveled across Asia studying traditional medicine, acupuncture, anatomy, and martial arts, seeking to deepen the understanding his teacher had begun. Everywhere he went, he became known not for spectacular victories but for strangely effortless ones. Opponents who appeared untouched during the early stages of a fight would gradually begin slowing. Limping. Dropping their guard. Failing to close their fists. By the time spectators realized what had happened… The match was already over. Someone eventually compared him to a sidewinder rattlesnake. Not because he struck quickly. Because he moved patiently around danger before delivering precisely one unavoidable bite. The nickname remained. Arjun never objected. When the invitation to the Underground Tournament arrived, he accepted for reasons few understood. He did not seek glory. Nor wealth. Nor the thrill of competition. His master had once told him that every martial art eventually becomes distorted if it never encounters genuine resistance. “A blade kept permanently inside its sheath,” Liang had said, “Will eventually forget it was made to cut.” Arjun carries those words with him into every fight. Not because he wishes to prove Snake Kung Fu superior. But because he believes traditions survive only when they continue adapting. Like the serpent itself… Always shedding old skin.
