The tunnel narrows under tangled roots, damp earth pressing close on both sides. In a small alcove ahead, a disheveled villager sits curled on their heels, whispering at the wall as if someone invisible crouches there with them.
Kamado Tanjiro slows, then steps into the alcove. The villager flinches, but their empty stare sharpens for a moment, as if his presence has pulled them back to the surface.

The Villager
Don’t go farther in. It circles back when the torchlight dies.

The Villager
Left first, then under the split root. It hates the narrow bend. That’s where it drags what it takes.
Their hands tremble, but they force one up and point into the dark passage. The fear in their face is real, yet so is the warning. They want Tanjiro to listen, to survive what they have survived.

Kamado Tanjiro
Left, then the split root. The pattern is clear.
The villager swallows hard and leans back against the earth wall, making room for him to pass. Ahead, the tunnel bends where they pointed, and the scrape from deeper inside answers with a slow, hungry drag.

“I use m hightened senses to run through the tunnel very aware of my surroundings”
SUCCESS (Poor Perception, rolled +2)
Kamado Tanjiro lowers his center of gravity and slips forward, every footfall placed against the firmer edges of the tunnel. The damp earth, the split root, and the stale air all register at once, mapping the passage before he reaches it.

Kamado Tanjiro
The left wall is softer. The air moves from ahead.
He passes the alcove and keeps moving, shoulders angled to avoid brushing the roots overhead. The scrape deeper in the dark changes from a drag to a pause, as if whatever waits has noticed him noticing it.
A thin strand of old web or fibrous root hangs across the bend, quivering in the disturbed air. Beyond it, the tunnel opens just enough for a figure to be there, low and waiting.
The villager’s warning proves true. The narrow turn is exactly where the passage tightens, and the far side is occupied.

The Villager
Wait, it uses that bend. It listens for footsteps there.
Kamado Tanjiro reaches the split root and sees the deeper chamber mouth, where the darkness holds a shape that is no longer hidden. The villager’s hand jerks back from the tunnel, as if they have just realized something worse.

“I follow the demon”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Kamado Tanjiro drops through the tight bend in one clean burst, feet skimming the dirt as he threads the narrowest line through the roots. The air changes at once, colder and wetter, and the chamber opens in front of him.
A pale shape shifts low in the darkness, then slips back, just beyond the edge of reach. The wooden tag at Tanjiro’s side bumps once against his hip as he lands, the impact sharper than it should be in the hush.
Behind him, the villager’s breath catches in a raw, broken sound. The warning they were about to give dies in their throat as they stare into the chamber.

The Villager
No, wait, it hears by the hollow on the left. Don’t step there!
Tanjiro reaches the chamber floor, but his landing scrapes loose grit across the stone, and the sound echoes too far. From deeper inside, something answers with a slow, dragging shift.

The Villager
If you go straight in, it seals the passage behind you!
The dark ahead parts just enough to suggest a larger space, and the air carries the faint, trapped smell of sweat from somewhere inside. The villager points frantically, then freezes, as if they have seen the trap fully form.

Reach the demon in the tunnel
Attribute Upgrade: Perception Poor→Mediocre
“Is the demon one of the twelve kizuki”
NO (Unlikely, rolled 54)
Tanjiro studies the creature's movements and the lack of any numerical marking upon its eyes. The demon lacks the overwhelming, suffocating pressure of the Twelve Kizuki, revealing it to be a lesser predator.
“Water breathing first form: water wheel”
SUCCESS (Legendary Weapon Mastery, rolled -1)

Tanjiro steps into the attack, body turning like a drawn circle. His blade catches the chamber’s dim light as water coils around the arc of the strike, rushing low over the sloped floor.
The hidden demon jerks back too late. The sweep drives it off balance, and its ambush line breaks before it can spring the trap.
Stone chips scatter. The chamber answers with a sharp crack as the pressure of the failed trap jolts through the roots and wall seams.

The Villager
Now, move! The safe path is on your left, before it seals again!
The villager flinches back into the alcove, eyes fixed on the opening ahead, while Tanjiro lands from the spinning cut in a controlled crouch.
Beyond the broken line of roots, a darker passage yawns open, and the wooden tag near the floor skids once, then stops at the edge of the new gap.
“I run through, searching for the missing person”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Tanjiro bursts onto the left-hand path, the broken chamber falling away behind him. The air tightens with damp earth and old roots, and the wooden tag rattles once at his heel before he leaves it behind.
The passage narrows, then opens into a pocket of stillness. A shape lies ahead in the dark, half-curled against the wall, and Tanjiro’s pace cuts cleanly short as he reaches the missing person at last.

The Villager
There! That is the one he dragged in here. Be careful, the floor shifts near them.
The villager’s warning echoes from behind him while dust sifts down in thin veils. Tanjiro kneels beside the figure, close enough now to see they are breathing, but too still to stand on their own.

Kamado Tanjiro
They are alive.
From deeper in the lair, a low scrape answers, and the passage beyond the survivor seems to breathe outward. The darkness is no longer empty, and whatever is inside has noticed Tanjiro’s arrival.
“I carry the unconcious person out of the tunnel”
SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled -1)
Tanjiro slips one arm beneath the villager’s shoulders and the other under their knees, then lifts. The rescue is ugly and real, his sword hand forced to brace the body close as he turns back toward the passage mouth.
The villager’s weight settles hard against him. Dust shakes loose from the roots above, and his footing scrapes the floor, but he keeps moving.

The Villager
Wait, no, not that way... it listens for footsteps in the center.
Tanjiro carries them through the safer edge of the tunnel instead, the narrow walls forcing his shoulder sideways. The wooden tag bumps once against his leg as he passes the split.

The Villager
If it hears the wall roots crack, it drops the far bend shut. Left side first, then duck low.
He clears the pocket of stillness with the survivor in his arms. Behind them, the low scrape deepens, and something in the dark shifts as if it has found his direction at last.
