The Final Seal of Ash

The Spire of Ash goes quiet after the last ash thing unthreads itself. Dust hangs in a dim ring where the doorway had been, and the chamber feels emptied, not safe. Oskar stands at the threshold, the Shadow coiled within him like a hand on a hilt.

At last. The old shape stirs. Let the Spire know its master has returned.

No. I know what this room wants. It wants a witness, and a sacrifice, and then it keeps the rest.

The soot on the floor lifts in a slow spiral, answering the Shadow’s hunger. Along Oskar’s arms, the smoke tattoos darken, and the pressure in his chest turns sharp as a blade.

Oskar Solace, if you mean to live through this, choose with your own hand. Seal it, sever it, or let it take you whole.

The ash in the chamber gathers into a thin, waiting crown above the broken seal. The Shadow tightens around Oskar’s ribs. The Watcher steps back, alarm hard in their stance, as the final decision hangs in the smoke.

Oskar lights another cigarette. "Is it just my breath or does he need another dead body?" Pact blade forming in his hand as he turns to the watcher. "You have a body that could be dead"

Oskar clicks a fresh cigarette alight. The ember blooms, and the Spire answers with a low hush, as if it takes the smoke into its old lungs.

The pact blade crawls out of his shadow and settles in his hand. He turns it toward the Watcher, not rushing, not blinking.

Then you do understand the price.

The Watcher goes still. Their raised hand lowers by degrees, and their gaze drops to the black altar, then to Oskar's blade, then back to his face.

If the Spire takes me, it takes my witness too. That is not surrender. That is keeping the room from swallowing you whole.

Let them choose. Let the smoke decide.
