The Spire Remembers the Gladiator

The soot-formed doorframe shudders wider. Ash pours out like breath from a furnace, and a gladiator’s shape rises from it, broad-shouldered and braced for a kill.

He is long dead, but the Spire gives him fists, scars, and a hollow glare of ember-light. The Watcher jerks back from the lattice, suddenly wary of both the dead thing and Oskar's smoking mouth.

Smoke again. Always smoke. Is this the price of your standing, or your chain?

The ash-man lowers into a fighting crouch, one hand half-raised as if measuring Oskar's throat. The chamber leans toward Oskar's inhale, and the sigil on his back flashes hotter.

Watcher

Watcher

Careful. That thing is the Spire remembering a debt.

The Gladiator Slave

The Gladiator Slave

I was bound once by masters and pit-law. Now I smell the same bargain in you. Step closer, warlock, and let me see what owns your lungs.

Ash curls off the gladiator's shoulders like shed skin. The open passage behind him trembles, and the room feels one breath away from violence.

✓ Quest Accepted

Subdue the ash-born gladiator

Oskar stands easily, cigarette between two fingers. And his free hand open to the side. "To be the intent behind my strikes" the shadow forms into a pact blade to be armed against the foe

SUCCESS (Superb Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

The Spire Remembers the Gladiator

Oskar straightens from his kneel with a slow, easy motion, cigarette balanced between two fingers. His free hand opens at his side, palm loose, as if inviting the dark to choose its shape.

The shadow in his chest answers first, not with words but with a hardening pressure behind his ribs. Smoke threads from his mouth and wrist, knitting into a narrow blade of black ash that catches the ember light.

To be the intent behind my strikes.

The pact blade settles fully into his grip, cool and hungry, its edge humming with the same soft moan that rides his inhale. The sigil on his back burns brighter through his shirt.

The Gladiator Slave

The Gladiator Slave

There. That is the smell of a masterless weapon. Let me see how it bites.

Watcher

Watcher

Do not let it pull you into its rhythm, Oskar. It remembers the pit.

The ash-born gladiator shifts his weight toward him, shoulders squared for impact, while the soot doorway behind him trembles and sheds sparks of dust. The chamber holds its breath around the two blades now poised to meet.

"The shadows chose me for a reason watcher" Oskar sidesteps and swipes his blade at the rushing gladiator

SUCCESS (Superb Melee Weapons, rolled +2)

The Spire Remembers the Gladiator

Oskar slips inside the gladiator's rush, his step angling past the attack as ash skates underfoot. The pact blade cuts a black line across the apparition's chest, and its body sheds sparks instead of blood.

The Gladiator Slave

The Gladiator Slave

Hah. Good. Hit harder. The pit remembers strength.

The figure staggers, but the cut does not end it. Ash peels from the wound and pours toward Oskar's wrist, hungry to climb the blade back into his grip.

Watcher

Watcher

It is trying to wear your motion. Do not let it set the pace.

Oskar Solace

Oskar Solace

The shadows chose me for a reason, watcher.

At the words, the sigil on Oskar's back flares through his shirt, and the smoke in his chest answers with a low, soft moan. The gladiator recoils as if struck from within, shoulders hunching toward the soot doorway.

For a breath, the ash-born body caves inward, drawn tight toward the blade and Oskar's sternum, as though the Spire is deciding whether to feed or finish what it made.

As the ash swirls Oskar take a deep breath to pull as much of it into himself as he can

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +1)

The Spire Remembers the Gladiator

Oskar draws in a long breath. The ash-laced swirl answers, streaming into his mouth and nose in a harsh black ribbon as the pact in his chest drinks it down.

The ash is cold going in.

The soft moan in his ribs deepens, and the sigil under his shirt flares once more. The ash-born gladiator jerks as if the breath has hooked straight through his sternum.

The Gladiator Slave

The Gladiator Slave

Yes. Take it. Let the pit know your lungs.

Ash pours inward instead of outward now, spiraling through Oskar's throat and sinking into the shadow nestled in him. The apparition's edges thin, its charge breaking into a stagger.

Watcher

Watcher

It feels the pull. Keep that rhythm, and it will either kneel or break.

For an instant, the soot doorway gutters, and the gladiator's body is half-drawn toward Oskar's chest, half-locked in the air, as the Spire waits to see which force wins.

Oskar moves towards the gladiator, shadow blade dissolving into tendrils slithering black under his clothes and reaches out to the hulking gladiator as if to kiss him. Another deep inhale to pull him deeper into Oskar

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

The Spire Remembers the Gladiator

Oskar closes the last step between them. The pact blade gutters apart in his hand, unraveling into black tendrils that slide under his sleeves and collar like living smoke.

He leans in and inhales again, slow and deliberate. The ash-born gladiator lurches toward him as if the breath has found a hook in its ribs.

The Gladiator Slave

The Gladiator Slave

No, you...

The shout breaks on the pull. The figure caves inward, edges folding, chest first, into the dark at Oskar's throat. The soft moan in his chest answers with a satisfied tremor.

Watcher

Watcher

It is going in. Hold him there.

The soot doorway collapses into a tight, choking ring of dust, then stills. Where the gladiator stood, only a heavy smear of ash remains, drawn thin and disappearing into Oskar's sigil-lit chest.

Watcher

Watcher

The Spire has remembered, and it has chosen its witness.
