The Spire's Hungry Awakening

The Sunken Archives shiver with ozone and burnt tobacco. Oskar Solace stands at the sealed seam, casket in hand, while the Shadow tightens around his arm like a live chain.

The Hooded Envoy

The Hooded Envoy

Hand it over. The knot-heart is in the casket, and the Spire is waking hungry.

Watcher

Watcher

If the lid is broken, the relic may already be turning him.

The Watcher steps in close, eyes fixed on the lacquered lid. Beneath Oskar's skin, the Shadow surges toward his throat, trying to seize the breath before the Watcher can.

The Shadow

The Shadow

He is mine to steer. Open it, and see which of us speaks through him.

The Archives answer with a low tremor. The black line beneath the stair widens by a hair, and the still water at the lip begins to quiver, as if the whole Spire is waiting for Oskar's next move to decide who holds him.

Deliver the casket to the Shadow

Is the hooded envoy in service of the shadow?

NO, AND WORSE (Even, rolled 92)

The Hooded Envoy pulls back their cowl, revealing not a face, but a hollow void of swirling, hungry ash that mirrors the Spire's own hunger. They are no servant of the Shadow, but a parasite of the Spire itself, waiting for the casket to be opened so they can feast on the soul-debt Oskar has just incurred.

The Hooded Envoy

The Hooded Envoy

You mistake my hunger for service, warlock. I do not serve the Shadow, I merely wait for it to finish hollowing you out so I may claim the remains.

Oskar Solace

Oskar Solace

The Shadow is not the only thing waiting for me to break.

Eat the heart myself. Giving me and the shadow more power

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

The Spire's Hungry Awakening

Oskar tips the lacquered casket open and the shrine-knot heart drinks the air like a coal finding oil. Smoke-black light floods his palms, and the thing vanishes into him in one hard swallow of will.

Oskar Solace

Oskar Solace

It goes down like hot iron.

The Shadow stirs inside his chest, fuller now, heavier, as if it has found another hinge to turn. Oskar's fingers clamp hard around the empty casket, and a thin tremor runs through his arms.

The Hooded Envoy

The Hooded Envoy

No. You were meant to carry it, not become the lock.

The discarded cowl twitches on the stone as the Envoy's ash-void leans forward, hungry and startled. Across the chamber, the Watcher freezes at the edge of the water, one hand rising in alarm.

Watcher

Watcher

The archives are closing around him. Look at the runes.

The submerged runes dim to a low, blue glare, and the still water at the lip shivers with a new pulse. On the floor, the ash stirs in a slow ring toward Oskar's boots, answering what he has taken.

Run. Flee the archives

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

The Spire's Hungry Awakening

Oskar turns and runs. The archives take his first strides in a breathless hush, then the floor skates under him as if the stone itself has decided to let him go.

The Hooded Envoy

The Hooded Envoy

Stop him!

The ash-void surges after Oskar, but it lurches short as the ring on the floor thickens and flares around his path like a closing circle. The discarded cowl lifts, then drops uselessly beside the stone.

Watcher

Watcher

He is out. The chamber is turning inward.

Oskar bursts through the far arch and leaves the Sunken Archives behind. Cold air hits him first, then silence, with the faint scrape of water and ash receding at his back.

Oskar Solace

Oskar Solace

The runes are dimmer out here.

Behind him, blue light gutters along the threshold in a narrow seam, and one black mote of ash clings to the empty casket in his hand. Ahead, a corridor bends into darkness, untouched and waiting.

Deliver the casket to the Shadow

Find a safe place to sit down and have a smoke

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +0)

The Spire's Hungry Awakening

Oskar finds a broken bench niche in the corridor wall, half-swallowed by wet stone and old silt. He lowers himself onto it, the lacquered casket balanced in one hand, the other already fishing for a cigarette.

Oskar Solace

Oskar Solace

The runes are fading. Good.

He lights up. The first pull of smoke sits heavy and clean in the cold air, and the black mote on the casket glints once in the ember light.

Watcher

Watcher

You sit like a man who has learned the floor can remember his shape.

The Watcher remains by the arch, no longer blocking the way, only watching. Beyond him, the threshold seam thins to a cold blue thread.

Watcher

Watcher

That casket is no longer empty. The archive has taken its notice, and so has whatever rides with you.

Smoke coils from Oskar’s mouth and hangs under the corridor vault, while the old arena door memory flickers faintly in the stones ahead, then fades.

Watcher

Watcher

If you mean to rest, rest quickly. If you mean to tell me what you felt inside that box, I will listen.

Learn what the black mote on the casket means

Oskar study's the mote on the casket. Inquiring to the shadow about it's meaning.

SUCCESS (Superb Knowledge (Occult), rolled +4)

The Spire's Hungry Awakening

Oskar turns the casket in both hands and studies the mote. It is not loose ash. It sits in the lacquer like a seed, dark at the core and ringed by a faint blue sheen that answers the seam in the arch.

Oskar Solace

Oskar Solace

The mote is a mark, not debris.

The Shadow

The Shadow

A seal remembers its witness.

The mote trembles once, and the casket lid gives a soft click without being touched. A thread of cold ash unfurls from the mark and briefly sketches the shape of an arena door in the air above Oskar's lap.

Watcher

Watcher

That is not residue. It is a claim, and a key.

The blue thread in the arch answers with a pulse, as if the archives have recognized the same signature. For an instant, Oskar can feel a hidden lock in the city beyond, waiting for the casket to be brought to it.

The Shadow

The Shadow

Now you know what they left on you. A door remembers the hand that opens it.
