The Altar's Choice

Smoke floods the vault and the black liquid on the floor draws inward, hissing around the knot. Oskar Solace stands at the altar, his body rigid as the Shadow pulls every breath into a single, dangerous rhythm.

Watcher

Watcher

Enough. I have seen the shell. Now I take what hides inside it.

The Shadow

The Shadow

Try, watcher. The husk is mine to wear, and his lungs are mine to spend.

The Watcher lifts both hands, and pale force gathers in a net of ash-light above Oskar's chest. The clean ash-mark blooms brighter in the ring around the knot, as if the Spire itself is listening.

Watcher

The vessel is spent. The entity can still be hauled free.

The Shadow

The Shadow

Let them reach. Let them learn what bites back.

The smoke in Oskar's throat thickens, then steadies. The altar warms, the seam in the stone widens, and the whole chamber leans toward his next move, waiting for him to choose who takes the power, and who is taken.

Leap forward with my pact weapon to strike down the watcher. Internally to the shadow "I told them they could be dead"

I told them they could be dead.

Oskar lunges, pact blade flashing out of his shadow. The strike lands hard across the Watcher's guard, driving them sideways from the altar.

Watcher

Watcher

So be it.

Black ash sprays from the cut seam of the blade, and the ash-light net shreds apart. Oskar's left arm burns where the recoil bites back through the pact.

The Shadow

The Shadow

Good. They bled first.

The Watcher staggers to one knee, one hand pressed to a smoking slash in their side. Behind them, the arena-door memory flickers once in the altar stone, and the seam of light in the knot widens.

Silence settles after the blow, uneasy and absolute. The lacquered casket lies untouched at the vault edge while the Spire keeps breathing ash around all three of them.

The Shadow

At last. It bleeds.

Watcher

Watcher

Foolish husk. You break the net and doom yourself.

Ash drifted through the chamber as the altar's seam widened in a low, grinding groan.

The Shadow

The Shadow

No. I claim the ruin.

The Spire drank the struggle and held Oskar Solace in its cracked embrace. The Watcher knelt wounded in the ash, and the Shadow kept its grip on the body's final breath. When the stone finished splitting, the chamber was left in silence, sealed around a victory that belonged to ruin.
