The earth groans, a deep and hollow sound that vibrates through the soles of Xarsthos’s boots. Bera scrabbles at the loose slate, her fingernails bleeding as the shelf she rests upon crumbles into the yawning dark.

Xarsthos lunges forward, his fingers locking around Bera's forearm just as the ground beneath her vanishes. The sheer force of the collapse yanks him toward the abyss, his boots sliding through the grit and shattered stone toward the center of the sinkhole.

With a primal roar, he hauls Bera upward, his raw strength overcoming the crumbling earth. He swings her in a wide arc, landing her firmly on the stable, untouched ground near the tombstone.
