The Sinkhole and the Forsaken

The ground heaves like a dying beast, swallowing the tombstones into the yawning maw of the sinkhole. Xarsthos pulls his cloak tight, the cursed blade in his hand throbbing with a heartbeat that matches his own. Gedwyn stops at the edge of the clearing, his face pale and slick with sweat.

Gedwyn

Gedwyn

That steel has a hunger, Xarsthos. It fed on the grave, and now it looks to feed on you. I want no part in this damnation.

Xarsthos

Xarsthos

He lacks the iron to carry such a burden. Better he stays far from the path I must walk.

Xarsthos

Xarsthos

Go then, tavern keeper. Seek your safety in the stone walls of your village. I have seen enough of your fear to know you will not last the night with me.

Gedwyn

Gedwyn

May the gods forgive you for picking that thing up. I am done with this darkness.

Gedwyn turns sharply and sprints toward the distant treeline, leaving the warrior standing alone amidst the settling dust and the rhythmic, hungry hum of the stolen blade.

I walk down the path, hearing the blade whisper to me. I understand its thirst for bloodshed. However, I remind myself of who I am and I bend the blade to my will

The Sinkhole and the Forsaken

Xarsthos grips the hilt, feeling the cold, predatory intelligence of the steel pulse against his palm. The blade whispers of ancient butcheries and the sweet taste of iron. He plants his feet firmly against the shivering earth.

Xarsthos

Xarsthos

You are a tool, a shard of malice meant to be wielded. I am the hand that decides where you bite. You will serve my purpose, not the grave's.

The violet glow emanating from the steel dims, flickering as the blade resists his iron will. Xarsthos forces his own intent through the leather of his glove, crushing the weapon's rebellious spirit into submission. The rhythmic thumping in the hilt slows, syncing to his own heartbeat. The sinkhole beneath him suddenly stalls, the violent shifting of the earth grinding to an uneasy, unnatural silence.

The silence is short-lived. From the depths of the black fissure, a low, guttural rasping sound rises, echoing like grinding stones. Something else is stirring in the dark, and it does not appreciate the silence.

The Sinkhole and the Forsaken

Xarsthos does not wait for the horror to surface. With a roar that shakes the loose stones, he leaps into the dark, violet-choked void. His boots find purchase on a slab of mid-air debris, and he launches himself toward the guttural rasping.

Xarsthos

Xarsthos

You feed on fear. I am the thing that breaks it.

The blade hums, no longer resisting but vibrating in lethal harmony with his strike. As a mass of roiling shadows and wet, chitinous flesh emerges from the sinkhole, Xarsthos brings his sword down in a blinding, vertical arc. The steel cleaves through the creature's core with the sound of snapping bone and tearing silk. The impact sends a shockwave of purple necrotic mist billowing outward, dissolving the immediate gloom into a chaotic swirl of light and shadow. The creature lets out one final, stifled hiss before collapsing into the muck.
