Timothy is driven down the dark steps, the chain biting at his wrists. The passage narrows ahead, and the air grows older, colder.
At the foot of the stair, the hidden way opens into a low chamber of rough stone. The violet light catches a slick of black water, and something pale lies half buried in the mud.

Prior Silas
There. The old work begins here. Find the way onward.
Silas tugs the chain, forcing Timothy toward the pale shape. It is not stone. It is a carved door face, worn smooth by age, with a keyhole set deep in its brow.

Timothy
The key I gave him matters here.
Silas stops short at the door, greed sharpening his posture. He lifts the iron key, then looks from the lock to Timothy, as if weighing which will open the deeper dark first.

“I persuade Prior Silas to use his glowing iron rod to heat the black water so that I can have a nice relaxing warm bath.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Silas glances at the black water, then at Timothy, and his tight grip loosens a little. The violet rod hums over the surface.

Prior Silas
A bath, in a tomb below the altar. That is a strange mercy to ask for.
He lowers the glowing rod. The water shivers, then begins to steam in thin white ribbons.

Timothy
I would not refuse warmth.

Prior Silas
No. I begin to see that clearly.
Silas crouches beside the pool, watching the heat spread across the dark surface. The chamber smells less of cold mud and more of damp stone waking up.

Prior Silas
Sit, then. Tell me what you hear in this place, and I will tell you what I have found in its bones.
“While enjoying my nice warm bath, I explain to Prior Silas that behind the ancient door is the storeroom where the monastery's fine wines are stored and where their valuable cheeses are aged. I persuade Prior Silas to open the door with his key so that we can have a cheese and wine party and also reunite with Alex, a boy slightly younger than me who is imprisoned in the storeroom.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Timothy leans back in the warm pool, steam beading on the stone around him. His words settle into the chamber, careful and plain.

Timothy
Behind that door is the store room. Fine wine, aged cheese, and Alex, trapped inside with it.
Silas stills. His eyes move to the sealed door, then back to Timothy, as if weighing hunger against habit.

Prior Silas
A cellar under holy ground, and a child hidden with the stores. That is a poor joke for a monastery to keep.
He draws the key up from within his sleeve, turning it once in his palm. The violet rod dims beside the pool.

Prior Silas
If you speak true, then this place has been lying to us for years. I would hear that boy's voice before I trust the stone.
Silas rises from his crouch and steps to the ancient face in the mud, key held ready. The black water keeps steaming at Timothy's knees.

Prior Silas
Stay where the warmth is, Timothy. When I turn it, tell me if you hear him first.
“I listen for Alex behind the door and smell the aroma of the fine cheese that I know are stored in the storeroom.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Timothy listens into the stone. A thin scrape answers from beyond the door, then a faint, breathy whimper, small but unmistakably alive.
The smell reaches him next, not wine, but a sharp, rich wash of aged cheese leaking through the seams, warm from the chamber's heat.

Timothy
That is him. And the stores are real.
Prior Silas freezes with the key poised. His head tilts toward the door as if he has heard the same answer Timothy has.

Prior Silas
There. I heard it. The boy is inside.
Silas turns the key. Old iron gives with a dry click, and the ancient face settles inward, the seal breaking at last.
A draft spills out with the scent of dust, cheese, and stale cellar air. Beyond the widening crack, a dim storeroom shows stacked casks and a shadow shifting low to the floor.

Prior Silas
Timothy, look. Is that Alex?
