Escape the collapsing passage

undefined / undefined

The Upper Passage groans as the ceiling arches buckle under the weight of the shifting mountain. Dust obscures the air, turning the lantern light into a sickly, yellow haze. A heavy stone slab crashes down between Timothy and Harlen, isolating them in the dark. From the shifting rubble, a third figure emerges, unbothered by the tremors. It is the Prior, but his face is obscured by a hooded cowl, his glowing iron rod pulsing with an unnatural, rhythmic intensity.

The debt is not paid by running, little bird. You seek the path of the martyr, yet you stumble like a thief in the night.

Timothy

Timothy

His voice carries a weight that chills my blood more than the frigid mountain air. My body aches to submit, to kneel before the rod and accept whatever correction he deems fit, but the floor beneath my feet is tilting toward the abyss.

Prior Silas

Choose. Shall you embrace the penance I offer, or disappear into the hungry dark below?

I tell the Prior that I am eager for him to punish me with his pulsing iron rod to teach me the error of my ways, and that the more harshly he punishes me, the more God will be pleased with him.

The Prior's Penance in the Abyss
Timothy

Timothy

Please, Father, do not let me succumb to the void. My soul is heavy with waywardness, and this flesh deserves the searing touch of your iron. Let it bite deep into me. The more severe your correction, the greater the glory wrought upon your spirit by the Almighty. I crave the sting of your rod, for only through your harsh hand can I find the purity I so desperately lack.

Prior Silas

Prior Silas

You seek the fire, boy. It is a rare repentance that calls for its own torment.

Prior Silas

The lad is brittle, yet his devotion to his own suffering is absolute. If I break him now, he shall be the perfect vessel for the Abbot’s will.

The Prior steps forward, the pulsing iron rod casting long, jagged shadows against the crumbling walls. The floor shifts violently, a chunk of stone sliding into the darkness below, yet the Prior remains steady as a mountain, his gaze fixed on Timothy with a look of predatory satisfaction.

I stretch my body over a large chunk of masonry and submit as the Prior inserts his pulsing iron rod into me.

I lean across the jagged slab, my breath hitching as I offer myself to his will. The stone is biting and cold against my skin, but it is nothing compared to the promise of his iron.

Prior Silas

Prior Silas

Accept your purification, child. The path to grace is paved in suffering.

The Prior presses the glowing iron forward. As it makes contact, a hiss of searing flesh fills the suffocating dark, masked only by the grinding of the ledge as the chasm widens. Timothy’s back arches, his hands gripping the loose masonry until his knuckles turn white, yet he does not pull away. The heat illuminates the dust-choked air, casting the chamber into a hellish, flickering orange glow. The floor groans, tilting further toward the abyss as the weight of the moment forces a choice: the pain of the iron, or the sudden, absolute drop into the blackness below.

I endure the pain as the Prior forces his pulsing iron rod deeper into me.

FAILURE (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Timothy

Timothy

The iron slips, biting into my nerve endings with a discordant jolt that makes my vision swim. The heat isn't a holy warmth, it is a clumsy, jagged assault.

Prior Silas

Prior Silas

Your discipline is as porous as this wretched stone. Stand, boy, or fall into the dark as a coward.

Timothy

Timothy

My muscles seize in a spasm of failed resolve. I am trembling, not with piety, but with the agony of a botched penance. The ledge beneath my knees groans, a high-pitched protest of granite against gravity. I feel the floor buckle, dropping away beneath my weight like a rotten floorboard.

The ground vanishes. Timothy slides, his nails clawing uselessly at the edge of the chasm. The Prior remains upright, his iron rod held high, casting a jagged, wavering light over the abyss as Timothy disappears into the swirling dust and darkness below.
