Escape the collapsing tunnel
undefined / undefined
The upper passage echoes with the rhythmic thud of water hitting the stone floor behind the heavy oak door. Harlen stumbles, his grip on Timothy tightening until his knuckles turn white. Suddenly, a figure emerges from the shadows of a recessed alcove, blocking the path forward. It is Prior Silas, his robes pristine and his face twisted into a mask of cold disappointment. He holds a heavy iron branding rod that glows with a faint, residual heat.

Timothy
He found us. There is no escaping the consequences of my flight, even here, buried under the weight of the mountain. My knees ache to hit the floor, to beg for the iron to finally settle this debt.

Prior Silas
So, the runaway seeks sanctuary in a tomb. You seem to have forgotten that the shepherd always retrieves his stray.

Harlen
Step aside, Silas. The tunnel is coming down, and I have no patience for your petty theology.
“I persuade Harlen that we must allow Prior Silas to brand me as punishment for my misdeeds.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Timothy
Harlen, stop. My spirit weighs heavy with the truth of my flight. This brand is the only path to penance, the only way to quiet the storm in my soul. Let the Prior do his duty, for I have earned the mark.

Harlen
What has he done to the boy? His eyes are vacant, filled with a terrifying, hollow peace. I cannot fight this madness.

Harlen
If this is your salvation, Timothy, then so be it. I will not be the one to keep you from your chains.

Prior Silas
You speak with sudden clarity, stray. Kneel. The fire of the Church purifies that which the flesh has defiled.
Harlen releases Timothy, his shoulders sagging in defeat as he retreats a few paces. Timothy drops to his knees in the dust, his back straightening in anticipation as Prior Silas steps forward, the iron glowing a dull, angry orange in the dim passage.
“I use my willpower to keep still while Prior Silas brands my buttocks to punish me for my misbehaviour.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Timothy
This is the cleansing. My flesh is but a vessel for my errors, and the iron shall be the furnace that tempers my soul. I will not flinch. I will not break. My resolve is a stone pillar in a crumbling world.
Timothy remains eerily motionless, his breath steady even as the searing heat radiates from the proximity of the metal. Prior Silas presses the glowing iron firmly against the exposed flesh. The scent of scorched cloth and skin fills the narrow passage, yet Timothy offers no cry of agony, his muscles locked in a rigid, unwavering silence. Behind him, Harlen turns his head away, his hands balled into white-knuckled fists at his sides. The ceiling overhead groans again, shedding a fresh cascade of limestone grit that dances in the orange light of the branding iron.
“I use my theology to persuade myself that Silas is right to brand me that I deserve the punishment.”
FAILURE (Legendary Willpower, rolled -3)

Timothy
This is madness. I search the scripture for meaning in this pain, for a divine reason to submit, but the words turn to ash in my mind. The heat is not holy. It is merely the cruel work of a man who has lost his way, and I am nothing but a fool tethered to a crumbling wall.

Prior Silas
Your silence is not piety, boy, it is cowardice. You hold your tongue to spite the Church, even while the earth itself rejects your presence.

Harlen
Stop it, Silas! The roof is coming down on us! Can you not see the death hanging over your head?
The ceiling yields with a thunderous crack. A massive slab of limestone shears away, plummeting directly toward the spot where Timothy kneels. The branding iron slips from Silas’s grip, clattering uselessly against the stone floor as the tunnel erupts in a blinding cloud of choking dust and debris.
