A Life After Testimony
Bren

The three witnesses remain in the adjoining recess, visible only as quiet silhouettes beyond the arch. Seris keeps the guards farther back, preserving the speaking space.

Bren sits beside the dry brazier without touching either ledger. Rain threads through the broken arch, and Sil’Thalis’s marked hand pulses with spreading pain.

Bren

Bren

You have named what was done to you, what you chose, and what you still want. What life should follow the testimony?

She leaves the question between them, offering neither absolution nor accusation. The separate witness sheets remain open, while the ledgers lie beyond her reach.

No answer is required for the review. The witnesses will remain protected, and the guards will not cross this arch unless called.

Beyond the recess, the witnesses speak softly among themselves, out of earshot. The brazier stays cold, and each beat of rain makes the quiet feel temporary.

Bren

Bren

I am asking because testimony should not become another sentence imposed on you. Speak only if you choose, and leave the rest unspoken.

“I look solemnly a head, looking just past Bren "I am Sil'thalis Domini of house Domini, 5th brother of team 10 , the most brutal team out of all 20 inquisatorius teams. My life and judge is in your hands. Do so with extreme prejudice ." I finish I lower my head not expecting absolution. Knowing the thing I fear most her leaving me will now happen.”

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

I am Sil’Thalis Domini of House Domini, fifth brother of Team Ten, the most brutal of all twenty Inquisitorius teams. My life and judgment are in your hands. Do so with extreme prejudice.

Sil’Thalis lowers his head, looking just past Bren. His marked hand continues to pulse beside the open witness sheets, while rain darkens the stone between them.

Bren

Bren

No. Not because I refuse to hear you, and not because I deny what you did. I will judge what I witness, but I will not own your life.

Bren rises from the brazier and steps close enough to be heard without raising her voice. She leaves the ledgers untouched, refusing both their authority and the surrender offered through them.

Bren

Bren

You have placed your life before me, and I accept the responsibility of answering honestly. I will tell you when you have caused harm, when you are evading it, and when you are choosing differently.

Bren

Bren

But I will not become your inquisitor, your absolution, or the person who decides whether you deserve to remain. If you want me beside you, stand beside me as yourself.

I heard no transfer of custody. I will record only that he offered judgment to Bren, and that she answered without claiming authority over him.

“I stand beside Bren as myself”

Sil’Thalis rises and takes his place beside Bren, facing her as himself. He leaves the ledgers, witness sheets, and surrendered judgment untouched between them.

Rain continues beyond the broken arch, but the space between them is clear. His marked hand still aches, and he does not offer it as proof or petition.

Bren

Bren

I see you. Not the title, not the team, not the record. You, standing here by your own choice.

Bren turns toward the adjoining recess, keeping the witnesses and their separate accounts within sight. Then she faces Sil’Thalis again without reaching for him.

Bren

Bren

Stand beside me, then. We can face what follows without making either of us the other’s judge or keeper.

Seris Vaun

I will record no transfer, vow, or custody. Only that Sil’Thalis stood beside Bren as himself, and that she accepted his presence without claiming him.

The witnesses remain protected beyond the arch. For this moment, nothing demands a verdict, and the two stand together without surrendering either person’s freedom.
