The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

Three weeks pass before Sil’Thalis travels alone toward the Troll Hills. The road narrows among wind-bent pines, old cairns, and stretches of pale, weathered stone.

Near dusk, a collapsed waystone lies half-buried beside the road. Dust trembles over its fractured face as an unfamiliar pulse rises from beneath the buried stones.

The old scars along Sil’Thalis’s arm answer with a muted thrum. The sensation resembles neither the refuge’s current nor the covenant’s measured presence.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

This magic is not the refuge, the covenant, Domini, or Xar.

The pulse comes again, deeper and slower. It carries no summons, command, or recognizable witness-mark, yet the buried road shifts enough to expose a narrow seam beneath the waystone.

Beyond the seam, darkness holds a faint copper glimmer. The Troll Hills rise ahead beneath gathering cloud, while the road behind remains empty and open.

✓ Quest Accepted

Identify the source of the unfamiliar magic

“I kneel and examine the seam beneath the collapsed waystone.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

Sil’Thalis kneels beside the collapsed waystone, brushing pale dust from the fractured face without disturbing the stones. Copper light pulses beneath the seam.

His scarred arm answers with a muted thrum. Careful examination reveals the seam is a deliberate join, not a natural crack, and its edges bear no Domini, Xar, or refuge mark.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The seam was made to open from this side.

Following the copper glimmer, Sil’Thalis traces a hidden line beneath the waystone and finds a shallow recess shaped for a hand, though no symbol identifies its maker.

When his fingers hover over the recess, the buried mechanism responds without grasping or directing him. The stones separate soundlessly, revealing a narrow stair descending into copper-lit darkness.

The opening remains fully clear behind him, with the road to the Troll Hills and the empty road behind both unobstructed. Within, old stone bears faint marks of deliberate passage.

The pulse settles into a steady rhythm below. Whatever lies beneath the waystone has been exposed without claiming Sil’Thalis, and the stair awaits only his chosen next step.

“I descend the copper-lit stair and investigate”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -3)

The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

Sil’Thalis descends the copper-lit stair, keeping one hand near the wall without touching its worn marks. The pulse deepens beneath each measured step.

The stair ends in a low circular chamber. Copper veins cross the floor around a shallow stone basin, whose surface holds a moving reflection of the road above.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The reflection is an observation, not a doorway.

He investigates the basin’s rim and finds three deliberate channels: one records arrivals, one records departures, and the third has been forcibly severed. No house mark claims the work.

When Sil’Thalis traces the severed channel with his scarred hand, the chamber yields its concealed fact: the waystone once sheltered travelers from something hunting along the road.

The investigation costs him. Copper light draws a measured thread from his dark reserve, leaving his palm numb and a faint ringing in his ears.

The basin then settles, preserving the road’s empty present and the shelter’s former purpose without opening another passage or assigning Sil’Thalis any role. The stair remains clear behind him.

“I examine the copper veins for their source”

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled -2)

Sil’Thalis follows the copper veins from the basin across the circular floor, tracing their intersections without touching the severed channel.

The lines converge beneath the chamber’s northern wall, where the copper is not ore but hammered wire sealed into older stone. Its path descends beyond the visible foundation.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The copper was carried here from below, not drawn from the hills.

His marked sight passes through the wall and reveals the source: a buried conduit leading toward the Troll Hills, fed by a dormant spring of metallic mineral deep beneath the road.

The conduit’s original purpose becomes clear. It carried warning-sense from the deep spring to the waystone, allowing the shelter to detect the thing that once hunted travelers.

The examination costs him a measured reserve of power. Numbness climbs from his palm to his elbow, and the copper pulse leaves a sharp ringing in both ears.

The source is fully identified, while the basin remains an observation record rather than a doorway. The stair behind him stays open, and nothing below claims his presence.

“I draw a healing circle and sit in the center. And enter a meditation trans for healing and answers on why my arm keeps taking damage for spell casting”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +3)

The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

Sil’Thalis draws a healing circle in pale dust around the basin, aligning its outer points with the copper veins. He sits at its center and enters a deep trance.

The circle gathers the chamber’s quiet warmth without touching the severed channel. Healing current moves through his arm, separating old scars, fresh strain, and the copper’s recent drain.

The answer forms clearly: spellcasting damages his arm because the scar-born circuit accepts magical force before his body can distribute it, using pain and numbness as containment.

Each working has been feeding power through the same injured pathways. The circuit preserved his life and magic, but repeated casting has overloaded its narrow channels instead of widening them.

The healing circle closes the damaged pathways and redistributes the reserve through his whole arm. Sensation returns from elbow to fingertips, while the scars remain visible and stable.

An unasked-for benefit emerges: the circle attunes to the buried conduit, revealing a safe mineral spring below the chamber whose restorative current can gradually strengthen the circuit without consuming his life force.

Sil’Thalis wakes from meditation with the answer intact, his arm functional and his reserve steadier. The copper-lit stair remains open, and the newly revealed spring waits beneath the northern wall.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the mineral spring

“With what I learned from meditation, if I use a staff will that midigate the damage”

YES (Likely, rolled 24)

The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

The answer settles through the healing circle without requiring another working: a staff would give the spell’s force an external channel before it enters Sil’Thalis’s scar-born circuit.

The copper veins illustrate the principle in pale light. Power would travel through the staff’s length and grounding point, widening its path instead of striking his injured arm all at once.

The damage would be mitigated, not erased. A staff could reduce the overload, numbness, and pain, but a flawed focus or excessive spell would still strain the circuit.

The mineral spring beneath the chamber reinforces the conclusion. Its restorative current responds to distribution and gradual flow, suggesting that a properly prepared staff could become a stabilizing conduit rather than a source of power.

The basin preserves the answer without marking it as an instruction. No tool is named, no choice is claimed, and the copper-lit stair remains open toward the spring below.

The healing circle’s pale points dim to ordinary dust. Sil’Thalis’s arm remains functional, while the revealed principle waits as practical knowledge: externalize the force first, then let the body receive what it can safely bear.

“Would a sword work just as well”

NO (Unlikely, rolled 61)

The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

The copper light rejects the sword as an equal conduit. Its rigid length can carry force, but it offers no widening channel or grounding point suited to the scar-born circuit.

A blade would concentrate the spell along its edge and return the pressure through the hilt. Instead of distributing the burden, it would drive a sharper surge into Sil’Thalis’s hand and arm.

The spring’s slow current confirms the distinction. Restoration requires gradual flow and dispersion, while a sword preserves force in a narrow line meant to cut, parry, and strike.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

A sword could carry magic, but not safely enough to replace a staff.

The answer establishes a limit rather than a prohibition: a sword might serve for a minor working or emergency focus, but each use would risk overload, numbness, and renewed injury.

The copper veins dim around the basin, preserving the comparison. A staff would stabilize the circuit through distribution; a sword would merely move the danger farther from the spell’s first point of impact.

Below the northern wall, the mineral spring continues its quiet pulse. Its restorative current remains available as a gradual test of the circuit’s strength, while the stair and chamber stay open.

“I descend toward the mineral spring”

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)

The Pulse Beneath the Waystone

Sil’Thalis descends the stair beneath the northern wall, following the copper conduit as it sinks through older stone. The passage remains clear and soundless.

The mineral spring’s pulse strengthens below him, slow and restorative. Copper veins widen along the walls, guiding the descent without directing his steps.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The current is gradual enough to strengthen the circuit without consuming it.

The stair opens into a natural cavern beneath the waystone. A shallow spring rises from black rock, its clear water carrying a faint silver-copper glow.

The conduit enters the spring through a bed of pale mineral deposits, dispersing its restorative energy into the chamber rather than concentrating it in one channel.

Sil’Thalis reaches the spring. The current recognizes neither ownership nor command, but its slow rhythm is available to his scar-born circuit, and the path behind him remains open.
