Witnessing Without Consent
Bren
Bren

The copper circle remains quiet beneath the clear spring, while the rebuilt staff cools across Sil’Thalis’s knees. Water carries the last resonance into silence.

Bren settles near the natural arch, close enough to witness but far enough to leave his space intact. Merovan’s Refusal remains unconscious beneath the distant ring, and the freed presence stays behind in the open current.

Bren

Bren

The structure distinguishes receiving from keeping, and refusal from return. I can state that plainly. I will not decide whether Avenril’s promise governs anyone who enters.

Bren

Bren

The lower channel is open, but nothing here has asked us to descend. That matters. We can pause without turning patience into consent.

The spring brightens beneath the copper plate, revealing faint maker-marks along the submerged rim. None forms a command, claim, or summons.

Bren

Bren

He has space to choose, and I have space to remain beside him. For now, witnessing is enough.

For a rare moment, the sanctuary asks nothing further. The lower channel waits beneath the water, open and unexplained, while the chamber holds its quiet around them.

Examine the Avenril lower return-channel with Bren

“I remain seated beside the spring with the rebuilt staff across my knees. I look toward Bren for several long seconds before a faint, knowing smile crosses my face. “Bren.” I tilt my head slightly. “You have managed to use the words witnessing, consent, refusal, and choice during what was supposed to be a normal conversation.” My smile turns predatory. “We discussed this.” I set the staff aside. “No archives. No records. No doctrine. No Avenril.” I hold her gaze. “Come here and tell me what Bren wants.””

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Sil’Thalis remains seated beside the spring, the rebuilt staff across his knees. He studies Bren for several long seconds before a faint, knowing smile crosses his face.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Bren. You have managed to use witnessing, consent, refusal, and choice during what was supposed to be a normal conversation. We discussed this.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

No archives. No records. No doctrine. No Avenril. Come here and tell me what Bren wants.

He sets the staff aside and holds her gaze. The blackglass touches wet stone with a muted crack, and the warning line flares before fading, draining the last reserve stored in its open chamber.

Bren

Bren

Bren wants you to stop turning every private moment into an examination. She wants your attention, your closeness, and the chance to speak without becoming evidence.

Bren comes to him and kneels within reach, leaving the spring and its inscription behind her. Her hands remain free, and she meets his predatory smile without retreating.

Bren

Bren

And Bren wants you to listen when she says that plainly. No archive, no doctrine, no Avenril. Just me, wanting you here with me.

“I match her kneeling away from her. " I did not tell you of Ilythiir as a way to show you how vulnerable I am. I used it as a cautionary warning." I pause looking at her. " I Sil'thalis Domini, the butcher of Ilythiir. The most feared brother in the inquisatorius. The one they, both empires believe I sold my soul to the void." I look down and sigh. "I fear of losing the one thing that keeps me moving recently." I look up to her eyes . " And I feared I lost that." I reach to her. " That is you Bren"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Sil’Thalis matches Bren’s kneeling distance, leaving the spring and its inscriptions behind. The rebuilt staff rests on the wet stone between them.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

I did not tell you of Ilythiir to show you how vulnerable I am. I used it as a cautionary warning.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

I am Sil’Thalis Domini, the butcher of Ilythiir. The most feared brother in the Inquisitorius. The one both empires believe sold his soul to the Void.

He pauses, looking at her, then lowers his gaze with a sigh. When he looks up again, the sanctuary’s blue light catches the strain in his red eyes.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

I feared losing the one thing that has kept me moving recently. I feared I had lost that.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

That is you, Bren.

Sil’Thalis reaches toward her. Bren takes his hand without hesitation, her fingers closing around his while she keeps her gaze on him.

Bren

Bren

You did not lose me. I am here, and I am listening to the warning, the fear, and the man speaking them. Not the title, not the butcher, and not the story either empire tells.

“Holding her hand. " Now what, do we continue this, what after. If I walk away from the empire you will not be safe." I pause. " So what next"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Now what? Do we continue this, and what comes after? If I walk away from the empire, you will not be safe.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

So what next?

Bren keeps hold of his hand. The spring murmurs beneath the copper circle, while the sanctuary’s open routes remain untouched and the distant sleepers do not stir.

Bren

Bren

We continue this conversation first. Not the empire’s conversation, not the archive’s, and not the one fear is trying to force upon us.

Bren

Bren

If you leave, danger may follow. If you stay, the empire may use you and reach for me through you. Safety is not guaranteed by obedience.

Bren

Bren

So we choose our ground. We tell no house more than necessary, keep the sanctuary’s routes voluntary, and decide together what evidence or allies we need.

Bren

Bren

Then we return to the junction when we are ready, not because Merovan’s network demands it. I will stand beside you, and I will leave if standing there ceases to be my choice.

“" This has always rattled around my skull since I can remember, for the decade I have walked this has fueled me." I stop as if remembering something. "Peace is a chain laid upon the willing. Through conflict, I find purpose. Through purpose, I sharpen my will. Through will, I master the Art. Through the Art, I shape my fate. Through mastery, I break the chains of others. No blood, throne, god, or ancient power shall name my path. My will is my own.." I look to Bren " it has always given me the choice not to choose a side."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

This has always rattled around my skull. For the decade I have walked, it has fueled me.

Sil’Thalis stops as if remembering something buried beneath years of war. The spring murmurs, and the sanctuary remains still around his gathering words.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Peace is a chain laid upon the willing. Through conflict, I find purpose. Through purpose, I sharpen my will. Through will, I master the Art.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Through the Art, I shape my fate. Through mastery, I break the chains of others. No blood, throne, god, or ancient power shall name my path.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

My will is my own. It has always given me the choice not to choose a side.

He looks to Bren, leaving the creed between them without offering it as doctrine or command. His hand remains in hers, while the open routes keep their silence.

Bren

Bren

Then that is your path, Sil’Thalis. Not Xar, Domini, the Void, or any power beneath this sanctuary gets to name it. I can stand beside that choice without taking it from you.

“I pause a moment - I share with her why I the archive in all its forms and I wish for her to speak plainly." In Ilythiir I was able to use all the records of every man woman and child and through it was able to get the location, regardless of distance. When I cast the spell every Ilythiir blood line was transported to the demon web pits. The spell was so complete, all life including animals and insects vanished. If it touched a ledger it was sent." I look up with remorse " the rulers see a tool. I know the weapon it can become." I say”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Sil’Thalis pauses beside the spring, keeping Bren’s hand in his. The water murmurs beneath the copper circle as he gathers the memory into plain words.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The archive frightens me because, in Ilythiir, I used records of every man, woman, child, animal, and insect to locate them across any distance. When I cast the spell, every Ilythiir bloodline was sent to the Demonweb Pits. If the spell touched a ledger, it was sent as well.

He looks up with remorse, the sanctuary’s blue light catching in his red eyes. His fingers tighten around hers, then ease.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The rulers see a tool. I know the weapon it can become. I want you to speak plainly with me, Bren.

Bren

Bren

Plainly, then. I believe you fear the archive because you know exactly how completely it can turn knowledge into distance, reach, and obedience.

Bren

Bren

I also believe your remorse does not erase what you did, and I will not soften that truth to protect you. But I do not mistake your fear of repeating it for a claim that you have already become the same weapon.

Bren

Bren

I want you here, speaking as yourself. I will challenge you when your methods resemble the thing you fear, and I will leave if you try to make my choice belong to you.

“I ask Bren to name our next boundary”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Name our next boundary, Bren. Plainly, and as your own choice.

Sil’Thalis keeps her hand in his, but does not tighten his grip. The spring continues its quiet course beneath the copper circle.

Bren

Bren

He is asking for a boundary, not offering me a test. I can answer without turning my words into a record.

Bren

Bren

Our next boundary is this: neither of us uses the sanctuary, its routes, or its witnesses to gain leverage over the other.

Bren

Bren

We investigate the junction together only when both of us agree, and either of us may stop, leave, or keep a truth private without punishment.

Bren raises their joined hands slightly, making the boundary tangible without invoking the copper plate or its maker. No mark answers, and no hidden current closes.

Bren

Bren

That is what I need next. Shared ground, not shared ownership. If you can honor it, I remain beside you by choice.

“" the sanctuary iss not mine, I don't claim it. It is the void born and their kin and allies. Not mine ." I move her hair over her left ear." As for your my dear. I will honer your boundaries as long as you want me."”

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The sanctuary is not mine to claim. It belongs to the Void-born, their kin, and their allies. It is not mine.

Sil’Thalis gently moves Bren’s hair over her left ear, leaving his touch light and withdrawing his hand without holding her in place.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

As for you, my dear, I will honor your boundaries for as long as you want me.

Bren

Bren

Then I hear both parts clearly. You do not claim this refuge, and you will not turn my boundaries into conditions for your presence.

The sanctuary gives no answering mark. Instead, the copper circle beneath the spring dims, revealing a second dry footing beside the water, a tangible route that avoids the sanctuary’s central current.

Bren

Bren

That path was hidden while we spoke as though ownership were possible. It is open now, but neither of us owns where it leads. I choose to remain beside you.

“"Do you want to check it out now or in a little bit" I ask plainly”

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Do you want to check it out now or in a little bit? I ask plainly.

Bren

Bren

Now, if you are ready. Waiting would give us rest, but it might also let Merovan’s network change what lies below.

Bren turns toward the newly revealed dry footing. She does not release Sil’Thalis’s hand, yet keeps her pace and choice visibly her own.

Bren

Bren

I choose to examine it now, together. We can stop the moment its terms change, and neither of us needs to claim what we find.

The dry path curves beneath the spring’s copper circle and opens into a descending passage of pale stone. Water remains beside it, audible but no longer between them and the way forward.

Bren

Bren

He asked plainly and left the timing to me. I am choosing this step, not surrendering it to urgency.

Together they enter the passage. Behind them, the sanctuary remains open and unchanged, while the lower route accepts their approach without names, commands, or ownership.
