The chamber stays still after the descent. Several unlit doorways wait in the limestone, but none opens without invitation. Aren Vey sets the oval token on the floor.

The travelers left their belongings above because each departure required a choice. Some returned for what they carried. Others decided that leaving it behind was part of surviving.

Blue mineral veins glimmer faintly beneath the stone. Bren remains near Sil’Thalis, attentive but silent, while the spring’s distant murmur marks the unobstructed way back.

Bren

Bren

I will listen, Aren. I will not record this or turn your account into authority over the people who left those things behind.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

Thank you. I remember a woman who abandoned the clasp, a child who carried the carved horse, and someone who broke the knife rather than surrender it.

Aren Vey keeps his hands away from the token. The unlit doorways remain dark, offering no demand, while Sil’Thalis has room to recover, question him, or let the silence stand.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

I do not yet know which doorway was mine. I know only that no path below should open because memory insists. It must wait for a willing step.

Sil’Thalis waits without touching the token or directing Aren’s attention. Bren remains beside him, leaving the unlit doorways and the return passage equally open.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

No memory will choose for me. I can remain here, return, or take the doorway when the choice is mine.

Time passes in the quiet chamber. Blue mineral light shifts across the limestone, and the distant spring continues its patient murmur without summoning anyone.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

I choose the middle doorway. Not because it remembers me, but because I am willing to see where it leads.

Aren lifts the oval token and walks toward the central opening. The doorway brightens only as his step approaches, recognizing choice without claiming authority.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

You may follow, or remain behind. Either choice stays yours, and neither changes what I have chosen.

The central doorway opens onto a descending path of blue-veined stone. The other passages remain dark, and the route back to the spring stays unobstructed.

Sil’Thalis follows Aren through the central doorway, crossing onto the descending blue-veined path. The opening remains behind them, and the return route stays unobstructed.

Bren follows by choice, keeping close enough to witness without touching either man. The doorway’s light fades softly, leaving the spring’s distant murmur audible above.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

This passage accepted me before Merovan’s pattern could reach it. I remember no command here, only a question answered by my feet.

The path descends into a broad chamber where pale mineral pillars rise around a still pool. Three worn door-shapes mark the far wall, each surrounded by separate footprints.

Bren

Bren

We are here because Aren chose the middle doorway. That is all the passage has proven, and we should not give it more authority.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

The left door led toward surrender. The right preserved a way back. The center asked what I would carry without being commanded.

No door opens. The pool reflects the three travelers without altering their faces, while blue light gathers beneath the central mark and waits for Aren’s next willing step.

“I ask Aren what the center demanded”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

Aren, what did the center demand?

Aren studies the central mark without touching it. The pool remains still, reflecting the three figures and the blue light gathering beneath the worn door-shape.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

It demanded that I choose what to carry without being commanded. Not an object alone, but a consequence, a memory, or another person’s fear.

He gestures toward the separate footprints around the three doors. None overlap, and none leads from the central mark toward the others.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

The question was whether I would carry Merovan’s pattern because it was placed in me, or carry my own answer despite what it had done.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

I answered by refusing to let the command choose the burden. I do not know whether the passage judged that, but it opened.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

It did not ask me to surrender the past. It asked whether I could enter while keeping its meaning mine to decide.

Sil'Thalis

Aren, what burden did you choose to carry?

Aren looks from the central mark to the still pool. Blue light gathers beneath his feet, but the chamber remains silent until he answers in his own voice.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

I chose to carry the memory of those I failed to protect, without carrying Merovan’s command as though it were my purpose.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

Their fear is not mine to rule, and their choices are not mine to rewrite. But I will remember where I obeyed, where I refused, and where my silence helped him.

The central mark opens beneath Aren, revealing a narrow stair descending beside the pool. No voice declares him absolved, and no current reaches toward the others.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

That is the burden I can carry: responsibility without ownership, memory without command, and the duty to warn those who may face the same choice.

Bren

Bren

Then the passage has accepted your answer, not your obedience. We can witness what comes next without making your burden ours.

Sil’Thalis follows Aren Vey down the narrow central stair beside the still pool. Blue mineral light slides across the stone, while the upper chamber remains open behind them.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

The steps remember refusal, not obedience. I will tell you what I recognize, and leave the rest uncertain.

Aren Vey descends steadily, oval token in hand. Sil’Thalis follows at his chosen distance, with Bren behind him and the way back plainly visible above.

Bren

Bren

I am following by choice. I will witness what happens, but I will not turn this stair into authority.

The stair ends at a low landing surrounding a dark, motionless basin. Three copper lines meet there, each fading before it can cross the others.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

This is where Merovan’s pattern stopped. The basin accepted no command, and the paths remained open for anyone willing to turn back.

A faint blue glow rises from the basin and illuminates a dry passage beyond it. Nothing pulls at Sil’Thalis, Bren, or Aren Vey; the descent is complete, and every route remains voluntary.
