The quieter campus walkway carries only the hush of trees and distant lectures. Ember walks beside you, copper-red hair bright against her cardigan, while Jack and Wyndy approach together from the opposite path.

Jack wears an ordinary dark jacket and carries himself with careful ease. Wyndy, polished even in casual clothes, stays half a step behind him, her sharply defined eyes measuring the space around you.

Jack

Jack

Cybil. Hey. I didn’t expect to run into you here. You look well.

The greeting is smooth enough to sound harmless, but Jack stops directly in your path. Wyndy watches your face, waiting for the smallest reaction, while several students slow nearby.

Wyndy

Wyndy

We were just talking about how strange campus feels lately. It’s nice when everyone can be civil, isn’t it?

Ember’s welcoming expression settles into alert attention. She does not step between you, but her shoulder angles subtly toward yours, leaving you room to disengage or answer.

Jack

Jack

We only wanted to say hello. Maybe clear the air, if you’re willing to hear us out.

✓ Quest Accepted

Keep control of Cybil’s reputation during Jack and Wyndy’s encounter

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn what Jack and Wyndy want from Cybil

Director's note

takes a half step back, then thinks better and stands ground

“I don't really want to talk to you jack you know things didn't well between us and it took me a long time to get over it.”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled -1)

cybil

cybil

I don’t really want to talk to you, Jack. Things didn’t end well between us, and it took me a long time to get over it.

You turn fully toward Jack, then glance at Ember before settling your attention back on him. You take a half step back, reconsider, and stand your ground as several Nearby Students pretend not to listen.

Jack

Jack

Okay. I hear you. I didn’t realize you still felt it that strongly, but I won’t force this conversation.

Jack’s easy composure falters. The Nearby Students exchange quick looks, and your private history becomes public enough to cost you some control over who hears your account first.

Wyndy

Wyndy

That sounds very serious, Jack. I thought you both agreed it was over.

Ember

Ember

She said she doesn’t want to talk. That should be enough, Wyndy.

Ember remains beside you without speaking for you, her stance open and steady. Jack nods once, but Wyndy’s tight expression makes clear that leaving quietly will not earn you her approval.

Director's note

Cybil blinks back tears and confidence falters

Director's note

Cybil turns to leave, the courage for that was too much

“Wyndy you're.....I can't..... Wyndy I have come out liking girls but knowing how you are you make me.....make me....second guess my decision, you're the worst”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled -2)

cybil

cybil

Wyndy, you're... I can't. I've come out liking girls, but the way you treat me makes me second-guess that decision. You're the worst.

The words break unevenly, but they land. Cybil blinks back tears, takes a half step away, then thinks better of it and plants her feet again. Ember watches quietly beside her, while Jack looks toward the passing students.

Wyndy

Wyndy

You cannot seriously blame your entire identity on me because you are upset.

Several Nearby Students have heard enough to understand the accusation. Their attention fixes on Wyndy, and the social certainty she carried into the encounter visibly slips.

Ember

Ember

She did not blame her identity on you. She told you what your behavior has done to her. You should listen.

Wyndy

Wyndy

Fine. Believe whatever version makes you feel better. I am not apologizing for being honest.

Cybil turns to leave, the courage for that much already spent. Behind her, Wyndy has lost the crowd’s easy approval, but the Nearby Students now carry a sharper, public version of the conflict.

Director's note

head to a nearby building to try to manage the panic that courage took

Cybil turns away before Wyndy can add anything. Her vision blurs at the edges, and the attention of the Nearby Students follows her across the walkway.

Ember

Ember

I’m coming with you. You don’t have to explain anything right now.

Ember keeps pace without touching her. Behind them, Jack says something too low to catch, while Wyndy remains near the path, visibly displeased.

Cybil reaches a nearby academic building and pushes through its glass doors. The cooler lobby quiets the campus noise, but her confidence still falters with every uneven breath.

Ember

Ember

There’s a bench over here. We can sit, or we can keep walking. I’ll follow your lead.

Ember stops several steps away, giving Cybil room. She watches with patient concern as Cybil steadies herself beside the bench, blinking hard until the lobby comes back into focus.

Ember

Ember

You made it inside. That was enough for this moment. We can stay quiet as long as you need.

Director's note

sits on the bench, silently for a long while before drawing a deep breath to speak

“so that was my ex and who he left me for. I don't even like boys anymore, he was kind of my transition, but like whenever I see him the hurt of knowing I was cheated on discarded just its like its all new like I never worked on me. I didn't expect that.....I thought I had fixed that in therapy while working on coming out of the character coming into myself”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +1)

Cybil sits on the bench for a long while, hands clasped between her knees. The lobby’s quiet settles around her until she draws a deep breath and looks at Ember.

cybil

cybil

That was my ex, Jack, and Wyndy, the person he left me for. I don’t even like boys anymore. He was part of figuring myself out, but seeing them brought back the hurt of being cheated on and discarded, like all my therapy and coming out had vanished.

The explanation comes out unevenly, but it does not collapse into silence. Ember remains seated nearby, copper hair bright against her cardigan, listening without trying to redirect the truth.

Ember

Ember

That makes sense. Seeing them did not erase the work you did. It reopened something painful, and those are different things.

Ember

Ember

You are still the person who did that work, Cybil. You are still becoming yourself. I believe you, and I’m glad you told me instead of carrying it alone.

Ember’s voice stays gentle and certain. She leaves the space between you open, offering neither a cure nor a judgment, only the steady company Cybil asked for.

“Did Jack contact Ember before approaching me?”

NO (Unlikely, rolled 79)

Ember lets the silence rest for another moment, then checks her expression as if sorting through the encounter carefully. Her attention stays on Cybil, not the glass doors or the campus beyond them.

Ember

Ember

Jack did not contact me before he approached you. No message, no call, no warning from him or Wyndy.

The answer settles plainly between you. Ember had not been recruited into the encounter, briefed on its history, or positioned as part of anyone’s plan; she chose to stay because she saw Cybil hurting.

Ember

Ember

I came with you because I wanted to. When they stopped us, I knew only what I could see and what you told me.

Ember folds her hands loosely in her lap, keeping her voice gentle and factual. Nothing about her support was arranged in advance, and nothing about it depends on Jack’s version of the past.

Ember

Ember

You do not have to wonder whether I was sent to manage you, Cybil. I was not. I am here because I decided to be here.

“thank you, you're a good friend......I'd......I would like to give you a hug but I don't know if you're comfortable with that because......well you know I'm into girls and I don't want you thinking anything about it like that......god I think coming out is making social cues harder for me and I wasn't that great to begin with.”

cybil

Thank you. You’re a good friend. I’d like to give you a hug, but I don’t know if you’re comfortable with that. I don’t want you thinking anything about it romantically. Coming out is making social cues harder for me, and I wasn’t that great at them before.

The words come out in a nervous rush. Cybil looks at Ember, then holds herself still, leaving the choice plainly between them instead of reaching without permission.

Ember

Ember

A hug is okay. Thank you for asking. And I won’t mistake kindness for a confession, I promise.

Ember opens her arms with an easy, welcoming smile. Cybil steps into the embrace, and Ember holds her gently, giving the contact room to stay simple and safe.

Ember

Ember

You don’t have to apologize for checking. Clear questions are good social cues, especially when something matters to you.

After a quiet moment, Ember lets the hug end naturally but remains close on the bench. Her expression is warm and untroubled, treating Cybil’s care as trust rather than complication.

“so ember besides being an amazing friend and getting recluses out of the house, what kind of like hobbies and things do you have.. . . (joking) I think I want to be you when I grow up”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled -1)

cybil

cybil

So, besides being an amazing friend and getting recluses out of the house, what kind of hobbies and things do you have? I think I want to be you when I grow up.

The joke lands gently after the seriousness of the afternoon. Ember’s eyebrows lift, then her smile breaks wide, and a soft laugh escapes before she can arrange a more modest response.

Ember

Ember

That is an enormous amount of responsibility to put on my future self. But I accept the compliment, especially the part where I get you out of the house.

Ember shifts on the bench, still smiling. Her copper-red hair catches the lobby light as she considers the question with genuine thought rather than reaching for a charming answer.

Ember

Ember

I like taking photos of ordinary things, trying recipes I may or may not understand, and collecting music for very specific moods. I also volunteer at campus events whenever I can.

Ember

Ember

Mostly, I like making people feel included. It sounds grander than it is. Usually it means noticing who is standing alone and asking if they want company.

She glances toward Cybil with an affectionate, uncomplicated grin, then nudges her shoulder lightly against the bench instead of against Cybil, leaving the closeness comfortable and chosen.

Director's note

looks off contemplatively

“I like cooking too....I use to have an eating disorder and I had to spend a lot of time reprogramming my brain from food as the enemy to a necessity of life, to one of life's great joys has been a lot of work. I think that's why I like making tea, tea is like a gift, it says 'here's a pleasant little gift because I want you to be happy' to whoever I make tea for”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +2)

cybil

cybil

I like cooking too. I used to have an eating disorder, so I spent a lot of time reprogramming my brain to see food not as the enemy, but as a necessity and one of life's great joys.

The admission settles softly between you. Ember’s bright expression grows quieter, her attention fixed on Cybil without pity or interruption.

cybil

cybil

It has been a lot of work. I think that’s why I like making tea, too. Tea feels like a gift.

Cybil looks off contemplatively, finding the words in the simple ritual: choosing something pleasant and offering it because another person’s happiness matters.

cybil

cybil

It says, ‘Here’s a pleasant little gift because I want you to be happy.’ That’s what I want it to say whenever I make tea for someone.

Ember

Ember

That makes beautiful sense. You’re not just making a drink. You’re taking something that once carried fear and turning it into care you can share.

Ember’s smile returns, gentler now. She rests her hands in her lap and lets the meaning remain yours, receiving the gift in the way you intended.

Director's note

gets up and smooths out clothes

“we should get going, but ember, we should cook sometime. I know some traditional tea party recipes that are just great....it doesn't always have to be tea....or coffee.... or anything like that but we should cook sometime, something yummy.”

We should get going, but Ember, we should cook sometime. I know some traditional tea party recipes that are just great. It doesn’t always have to be tea or coffee, but we should make something yummy.

Cybil gets up and smooths out her clothes, then gathers herself beside the bench. The lobby feels steadier now, its quiet giving the invitation room to land.

Ember

Ember

I would love that. Traditional tea party recipes sound wonderful, and I am fully in favor of cooking something delicious instead of merely discussing beverages.

Ember rises too, adjusting her sunflower-yellow cardigan and slipping the campus flyer into her bag. Her smile turns bright with the easy excitement of a plan becoming real.

Ember

Ember

We can pick a day when neither of us is rushing. You can teach me one of your recipes, and I will bring something to contribute, even if my technique is questionable.

She falls into step beside Cybil as they leave the academic building. Outside, the campus afternoon has softened, and the promise of a shared meal follows them into the open air.
