A Place of Her Own
Ember
Ember

You arrive at your studio still carrying the art vendor’s carefully wrapped canvas, with Ember beside you and the campus afternoon trailing away in distant music and warm light.

Ember steps inside only after you make room, then surveys the futon, bookshelf, and narrow wall with cheerful concentration. She clears a stack of books from a safe patch near the shelves.

There. No leaning it against anything wobbly, no accidental coffee disasters, and no dramatic art damage before we decide where it belongs.

She props the wrapped painting securely against the cleared wall, leaving the canvas covered but visible enough to hint at its greens and golds. The apartment feels briefly like a beginning.

Ember

Ember

Tea, snacks, or music while we think? I can offer all three, but I promise not to turn your apartment into an arts committee meeting.

Ember

Ember

She is building a life piece by piece. I want to make this feel like hers, not like another performance she has to pass.

Ember looks toward you, bright and patient, one hand resting lightly on the back of the futon. Outside, the campus noise fades, leaving the choice of what comes next entirely open.

“I can do great tea, how about a cinnamon chai with a touch of brown sugar? You pick the music, but just low okay? I.....umm...would like to talk to you more than listen to music”

I can do great tea. How about a cinnamon chai with a touch of brown sugar? You pick the music, but keep it low, okay? I... umm... would like to talk to you more than listen to music.

You go to the kitchen area and gather the chai, cinnamon, brown sugar, and kettle. Ember watches from the futon, her bright expression settling into attentive warmth.

Ember

Ember

Cinnamon chai it is. And low music, absolutely. I would much rather hear what you want to tell me anyway.

The kettle begins to murmur. You measure the tea carefully, add the cinnamon and brown sugar, and let the familiar work give your hands something steady to do.

Ember

Ember

I can put on something soft in the background, or nothing at all. Either way, I am here, and I am listening.

Ember lowers the music until it becomes a quiet thread beneath the apartment’s ordinary sounds. When you bring over the steaming mugs, she shifts to make room beside her on the futon.

Ember

Ember

Thank you. Sit with me, and we can talk about anything you want, including the painting, college, or whatever is making that thoughtful face.

The chai smells warm and sweet between you. Ember takes a careful sip, then waits without filling the silence, giving your conversation the space you asked for.

“thank you for inviting me to the art festival you know how I said I'm kind of refiguring myself out? I um (bites lip) I have been kind of putting myself back together. I feel like I was always playing a character and I had a pretty dramatic, rude awakening, and that character doesn't work anymore I want to be my genuine self now I'm just figuring out who she is and how to be her. I appreciate you being such a good friend today.”

Thank you for inviting me to the art festival. You know how I said I’m refiguring myself out? I’ve been putting myself back together. I feel like I was always playing a character, and then I had a pretty dramatic, rude awakening. That character doesn’t work anymore. I want to be my genuine self, and I’m figuring out who she is. I appreciate you being such a good friend today.

The words leave you carefully, with your mug warming both hands. Ember listens without interrupting, her usual brightness quieting into something more attentive as the low music continues behind you.

Ember

Ember

Thank you for trusting me with that. And for the record, I believe you. You do not have to perform being genuine for me.

Ember sets her chai down and turns toward you fully. Her smile is warm, but a small hesitation remains, as if your gratitude has made the friendship feel more important than she expected.

Ember

Ember

I’m glad I could be your friend today. Just promise me I’m not the only person you’re letting see this version of you. I can listen, but I don’t want you carrying everything with me as your only support.

The caution does not withdraw her kindness, but it gives your thanks a boundary: Ember accepts what you offered while making clear that your trust cannot become a responsibility she bears alone.
