After giving Mara time to disappear down the residential path, Cybil and Ember return beneath Saturn Shop and Sip’s cosmic sign. Rowan is inside, wiping tables and setting the evening menus straight.

Ember

Ember

She made it home with the flower still in her hair, I hope. You looked very happy walking beside her.

Rowan lifts a hand from the counter as they enter. Near the pastry case, a young adult woman with a compact build, olive skin, dark curly hair, and a rust-red coat notices the name Mara on Cybil’s phone screen.

Nina

Nina

Sorry, did that say Mara Vale? My name is Nina. I know Mara from the community dance studio, and she told me she was making plans for Saturday with someone important.

The woman steps closer, visibly shaken beneath her careful composure. Rowan pauses with a stack of menus in hand, while Ember’s bright expression turns watchful beside Cybil.

Nina

Nina

I thought she meant me. We were supposed to talk about something serious, and then she stopped answering. If you are the person she chose instead, I need to know what happened.

“Um, yes I'm suppose to see mara vale this saturday. if it is not too rude can I ask what mara promised to discuss?”

I’m Cybil, and yes, I’m supposed to see Mara Vale this Saturday. If it isn’t too rude, may I ask what Mara promised to discuss with you?

Cybil keeps her voice gentle and direct. Ember remains beside her, while Rowan sets the menus down and gives Nina his full attention.

Nina

Nina

She is asking instead of assuming. I can answer her honestly.

Nina

Nina

Mara promised to talk with me about leaving the community dance studio. I was offered a teaching placement across town, and I wanted her advice before I accepted it.

Nina’s shoulders lower as the explanation becomes practical rather than romantic. She glances at Cybil’s phone, then carefully meets her eyes.

Nina

Nina

Mara did not promise me a date or anything like that. She spoke warmly about you, actually, and said Saturday mattered to her. I should have asked before jumping to conclusions.

Ember

Ember

That sounds like a misunderstanding with a very fixable shape. Nina, you can ask Mara directly about the studio, and Cybil can keep her Saturday plan.

Saturday afternoon settles warmly around the tea counter. Mara sits beside Cybil with a small paper bag of sweets, while indigo tea steams between their cups.

cybil

cybil

Mara, can I ask about Nina? She came into Saturn after you left and thought you had promised to discuss something serious with her.

Mara’s expression turns attentive rather than defensive. She sets down the lemon slice, giving Cybil the direct answer her question deserves.

Mara

Mara

Of course. Nina and I teach at the same community dance studio. She was deciding whether to accept a teaching placement across town, and she wanted my advice.

Mara

Mara

I was warm because I care about her as a friend and colleague, not because I was hiding a romantic promise. I should have realized my words might sound more significant than I meant.

Mara nudges the sugar bowl toward Cybil, then adds lemon to her own cup. The tea shifts from indigo toward violet as Mara’s honest explanation settles comfortably between them.

Mara

Mara

Thank you for asking me directly. Nina matters to me, and so does this date with you. I would rather we talk plainly whenever something worries either of us.

“I appreciate that, ember and violet are good friends to me and I wouldn't want you to think anything was off there either. I'm still trying to navigate having girls who are my friends and possibly having a girlfriend, this is all so new to me.”

I appreciate that, Mara. Ember and Violet are good friends to me, and I wouldn’t want you to think anything was off there either. I’m still learning how to have girls who are my friends and possibly have a girlfriend. This is all so new to me.

Mara listens without interrupting. The violet tea cools between them, and the crowded counter fades into a softer background as Cybil’s explanation finds its place.

Mara

Mara

Nothing is off, Cybil. I understand that friendship and romance can overlap in your life without making either one less real. You are allowed to be learning this.

She turns her cup slowly between both hands, considering her words rather than rushing to reassure. Her expression stays open, giving Cybil room to remain honest without defending the people she loves.

Mara

Mara

Ember and Violet can be important to you, and I can still be someone you are exploring romance with. I do not expect you to arrive already knowing how to balance everything.

Mara

Mara

We can talk about boundaries and reassurance as we go. For now, I am glad you told me plainly, and I am glad we are here together.

Mara, would you like to visit the nearby music shop, browse books here at Saturn, or try the pizza place with the old arcade games? I have quarters.

Mara’s face brightens at the range of choices. She glances toward the café windows, then back to Cybil, clearly enjoying that the afternoon can become something spontaneous.

Mara

Mara

The pizza place and arcade games sound perfect. I would love to see what you choose to play, and I promise not to be too competitive.

Mara gathers the paper bag of sweets and slips her planner into her purse. She leaves the tea counter beside Cybil, their date extending into the warm bustle of the nearby street.

Mara

Mara

You said you have quarters, so I expect at least one game chosen entirely because it looks ridiculous. Afterward, we can share pizza and decide whether I am allowed a rematch.

The pizza place’s bright sign appears around the corner, its front windows revealing rows of old cabinets and small tables. Mara walks close beside Cybil, smiling as the plan takes shape.

Mara

Mara

Thank you for giving us choices instead of deciding what our date should be. I like learning what sounds fun to you, Cybil.
