The Saturn shop and sip is between rushes when you arrive for your shift. Beside the café counter, a young adult woman waits in a slate dance sweater, her dark braid pinned with a silver star.

Mara
There you are. I was beginning to think the universe had rescheduled us.
She smiles without making the greeting feel like pressure. During the quiet lesson, the café hum softens around you, and her patient hands guide yours through the turn.

Mara
Easy. Let your shoulders loosen. You already know where you want to go.
Her fingers remain lightly over yours after the step ends. The warmth of her touch is careful, unmistakable, and suddenly harder to file away as ordinary instruction.

Mara
Cybil, say it out loud, finally. What is it you feel when you look at her?
The question hangs between you, gentler than a challenge. Beyond the counter, cups clink and someone laughs, but the answer seems to belong only to this small space.

turning to face the dance instructor
“you know I'm just really tense, I was never graceful, you bring out something else in me.”
FAILURE (Poor Conversation, rolled -1)

You turn to face the dance instructor, your bright green eyes meeting hers. The words gather awkwardly, and the careful warmth between you suddenly feels too visible beneath the café lights.

cybil
I’m just really tense. I was never graceful, and you bring out something else in me.
The confession lands unevenly. Your last words sound less like an answer than an open door you are suddenly afraid you have left unlocked.

Mara
Something else? I’m Mara, by the way. And you can take that at your own pace.

Mara
She is trying to tell me something, but pushing her would only make her retreat.
Mara eases her hands away, giving the moment room instead of turning it into a question. The dance lesson has stopped, but neither of you quite steps back.

Mara
We don’t have to name it today. Just show me where the tension is, and we’ll start there.

“umm just here”
FAILURE (Poor Conversation, rolled -1)

cybil
Umm... just here.
You indicate the places where backpack straps usually cross your shoulders and upper back, but the gesture is vague, stopping short of showing Mara exactly what feels tight.

Mara
Your shoulders and upper back. I can work with that. You do not have to explain it perfectly.
Mara studies the angle of your arms, then steps beside you rather than reaching in front. The café lights catch the silver star in her braid as she demonstrates a slower shoulder roll.

Mara
Follow this instead. Let the movement tell us what words cannot yet.
The lesson becomes practical instead of confessional. Mara gives you space to mirror her, and the pressure to identify the feeling aloud loosens without disappearing.

Cybil tries to mirror mara
You turn to face Mara and mirror her slower rhythm, rolling your shoulders beneath the imaginary pressure of backpack straps. The tightness begins to ease by degrees.

Mara
That’s it. You don’t have to perform confidence for me. Just stay with what your body is actually saying.
Mara moves alongside you, close enough to guide the pace but careful not to touch. Her attention feels steady rather than examining, and the café’s ordinary noise recedes.

cybil
Her voice makes the next breath easier.

Mara
You’re carrying more than muscle tension, Cybil. I notice that. But I also notice how hard you’re trying to meet me halfway.
She lets the movement settle before turning fully toward you. The silver star in her braid trembles as she exhales, her expression open but unexpectedly vulnerable.

Mara
I like being here with you. I’m not asking you to decide what that means today, but I wanted you to know.

awkwardly tries turns to head to the counter
“I um have to get to my shift, how about a mint green tea on the house? it's excellent with a bit of honey and soy milk, I can mix it up perfectly if you'd like. You know for the dance lesson and everything”
SUCCESS (Good Cooking, rolled +0)

cybil
I, um, have to get to my shift. How about a mint green tea on the house? It’s excellent with honey and soy milk, and I can mix it perfectly for you. You know, for the dance lesson and everything.
You glance at your feet, squirming just slightly, then awkwardly turn toward the counter. Mara watches without crowding you as you begin measuring mint tea, honey, and soy milk.
The first pour goes smoothly, but the honey jar sticks. A small ribbon spills across the counter before you free the lid and finish the drink, creamy and fragrant.

Mara
That sounds wonderful. And very persuasive, especially with the confident little promise that you can make it perfectly.
You set the cup before Mara, the last of that jar’s honey wiped away with a cloth. Steam curls between you, carrying mint into the café air.

Mara
Thank you, Cybil. I’ll take it exactly as offered, lesson and all.
Mara wraps both hands around the cup, smiling over its rim. You turn back toward the shift, the wasted honey a small price for having made something carefully for her.
