The key turns, and the small room receives them with bare floorboards, limewashed walls, and a wide window silvered by mist. Bellmere’s river lights shimmer below the descending road.

Carciel carries his travel bundle inside. Serren follows with the sealed compact wrapped carefully against the damp, then sets it on the unfinished table.

It is smaller than I imagined. I like that. There is nowhere for either of us to disappear.

Serren tests the hearthstones, opens the shutters, and clears a corner near the wall. The room slowly gathers the first shapes of a shared life.

Supper first, I think. Then fishing gear tomorrow, if the river is kind. The compact can wait until we decide whether it belongs on the table or somewhere only we know.

A room can become a home by being chosen, one ordinary thing at a time.

Outside, rain whispers along the eaves. Inside, the sealed compact rests between the bundles, while the empty hearth waits for its first fire and the two of them begin deciding where everything should go.

Carciel opens his bundle and searches beneath folded clothes, spare cord, and the wrapped lute case.

A rough buckle catches his finger. The sting makes him pause, but his hand finds a thin, forgotten picture tucked beneath the bundle's lining.

You kept that hidden even from yourself.

The old picture is creased at the corners and softened by years of handling. Damp has darkened one edge, but the image remains clear enough to recognize.

The picture survived the road better than the bundle did.

May I see it, if you want to show me? Or we can leave it yours alone. Either way, it can have a place here.

Serren draws the nearest stool closer without touching the picture. Beside the sealed compact and the southern ledger, the old image waits in Carciel's hand for a choice about where it belongs.

Ah, it is... nothing, just an old picture of my mother. She was human.

Carciel turns the picture so Serren can see it and holds it across the space between them. The faded image shows a woman caught in stillness, her features softened by age and damp.

Thank you for showing me. I know that was not nothing.

She has your eyes, or perhaps you have hers. What do you remember about her?

The question rests gently beside the sealed compact and the southern ledger. Serren leaves the picture in Carciel's keeping, but shifts the empty stool nearer, making room for the memory at their shared table.
