Three weeks after Bellmere became home, Archivist Pell presses a sealed invitation flat against his palm as he climbs the cooper’s shop stairs. He has brought no court papers, only a southern archive’s question.
He pauses outside the upper room, checks the unbroken wax, then knocks with deliberate care. Below, the Cooper’s mallet falls silent.

Archivist Pell
Carciel. Serren. I bring no summons, and no demand. Only an invitation that deserves your answer.
Inside, lamplight catches the room they built from spare wood, travel-worn belongings, and new certainty. Serren turns from the window, studying Pell’s face before looking at the seal.

Serren Vale
You came all this way to ask, not to tell us. That matters. What does the southern archive want?

Archivist Pell
A musician for its dedication, and a careful witness to observe what the ceremony leaves unsaid. The choice is yours. Bellmere remains yours, whether you accept or refuse.
From the workbench below, the Cooper listens without interrupting. Pell extends the sealed invitation toward Carciel and Serren, offering the future without placing a hand upon it.
“I gently take it and look it over. What is it?”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Carciel gently takes the invitation from Pell and turns it beneath the lamplight. The wax bears a southern archive seal, intact and carefully impressed.
The parchment yields its contents without resistance. It names a dedication for a newly opened hall of records, requesting Carciel’s music and Serren’s presence as an independent witness.

Archivist Pell
There are no hidden duties in the wording. No oath, no court authority, and no demand for the sealed name. If you attend, you may observe everything. If you refuse, I will answer that Bellmere came first.

Serren Vale
He brought us a choice he cannot control.
A second sheet lists the archive’s proposed terms: travel paid in advance, lodging separate from the ceremony, and permission to leave before any private consultation.

Archivist Pell
I wanted you to see the terms before my hope colored them. Tell me what must change, or tell me no. Either answer will remain welcome here.
Serren steps closer to read beside Carciel, their shoulder nearly touching his. Pell waits at the threshold, leaving the invitation in Carciel’s hands and the next word to them.

Southern archive invitation
“"What do you think Serren?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Carciel
What do you think, Serren?

Serren Vale
I think Pell has brought us an invitation, not another door that locks behind us.
They trace the separate lodging and the permission to leave, weighing each term as carefully as the seal.

Serren Vale
I would go, if we can return together and speak only where we choose. I do not want our quiet life treated as payment for a song.

Archivist Pell
Then those are terms, not worries. I will have them written plainly: your return remains yours, your testimony remains voluntary, and no private meeting happens without both your consent.
Pell steps fully into the room and sets a blank sheet beside the invitation, leaving space for their conditions. The choice now has room to become theirs.

Serren Vale
That is what I needed to hear. We can consider the invitation without owing it our lives.
