A Bard and a Rogue: a partial love story

Festival eve crowds the market square with lanterns, colored banners, and the nervous clatter of hurried footsteps.

A trumpet cuts through the music. Lord's agents enter from three streets, searching musicians and tearing down banners marked with a hidden cause.

Carciel's lute draws a sharp glance from a passing patrol. Before the search reaches him, a charming rogue slips between frightened revelers and beckons toward a shuttered spice stall.

The rogue reaches the stall and presses a wax-sealed message toward Carciel, keeping his body between the letter and the nearest patrol.

Boots converge through the lantern haze. The rogue holds the sealed message out for one final instant as the patrol captain turns toward them.

Carciel's fingers fold the wax-sealed note into the hidden gap beneath his lute's strings, swift and deft beneath the cover of his strumming hand.

The lute settles against his side with the message concealed inside it. Nothing about its weight betrays the secret.

The rogue turns from Carciel and sweeps a fallen basket into the path of the nearest searchers, sending festival apples rolling across the stones.

Behind the captain, the rogue slips toward a narrow gap between the spice stall and a bannered cart. The patrol's attention divides, but the captain's gaze remains fixed on Carciel, waiting for his response.

The bright melody cuts through the square, but it does not pull the patrol's eyes from the lute. Instead, the captain hears the careful angle of Carciel's attention.

The captain points toward Carciel. Two searchers abandon the rolling apples and close around the lute, while the captain keeps the narrow passage in view.

The failed feint leaves the rogue exposed, but reveals a usable opening: beyond the stall, a loose rear flap leads into the festival kitchens, where steam and crowds churn together.

Carciel pivots hard, tucking the lute against his ribs as he breaks for the spice stall's loose rear flap.

The captain's grasp closes on empty air. Carciel slips through the lifted canvas before the nearest searcher can reach him.

Steam swallows Carciel in a rush of herbs, copper pots, and startled cooks. Behind him, the flap falls shut against the square's uproar.

Inside the crowded kitchen, the sealed message stays hidden beneath the lute strings. Through the thinning steam, the Charming Rogue appears beside a hanging curtain.

Boots thunder beyond the canvas, while the rogue lifts the curtain and waits beside the dark pantry passage.

Carciel follows through the pantry passage as the rogue slips into the old service lane. A barred rear gate yields beneath the rogue’s lifted latch, opening a shadowed route beyond the lord’s search. The sealed message remains hidden beneath Carciel’s lute strings, and the rogue disappears through the gap.
