The keeper sets the travel ledger open beside the hearth, just as promised. Supper cools on the table. Its southern seal matches the wrapping around the stewardship compact.

Roadside Keeper
Every lawful bearer adds a destination and a witness before passing north. The compact names Bellmere, but the road still requires your own return recorded.
The keeper turns the ledger toward Carciel. Beneath older entries, a clean line waits beneath the southern seal, its ink untouched by weather or official hands.

Serren Vale
Bellmere is our destination. Not an escape, not a summons, and not a spectacle. Home.
Serren remains beside Carciel as the keeper offers the quill. The compact rests between them, its journey from the southern hall now joined to the road that carries them back.

Roadside Keeper
Then let the record say what the compact began. Two lawful bearers, witnessed on the north road, returning by their own choice.
“I sign Bellmere into the travel ledger”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

The quill meets the waiting line. Carciel writes Bellmere, then adds the shared return beneath it, his hand steady enough to leave both words clear.
The southern seal warms through the ledger cover. A bead of ink spills across Carciel’s fingertips as the quill catches, staining his skin and marking the margin.

Roadside Keeper
The mark holds. Destination and shared responsibility, nothing more.
The seal’s warmth fades. The entry remains legible, witnessed by the keeper and bound to the compact’s lawful passage without naming private matters.

Serren Vale
That is enough. Bellmere will receive us as ourselves.
The keeper turns the ledger slightly. A narrow margin remains beneath the completed entry, labeled for a reason of return, while rain taps the road-dark windows.

Roadside Keeper
That field is optional. Do you leave it blank, or give the road one more sentence?
“I give the road one more sentence”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +2)

Carciel fills the margin in a single calm line: “We return to the home we chose, together.” The ink settles without spreading.

Roadside Keeper
A sufficient reason. It names the road ahead, not the private rooms waiting at its end.
The keeper presses the ledger flat and draws a neat closing stroke beneath the sentence. The southern seal remains cool, its authority spent without asking for anything more.

Serren Vale
Together, and still ourselves.

Serren Vale
Thank you. We have carried enough of our life into other people’s records.

Roadside Keeper
Then let this one carry only your passage. Bellmere is recorded, and your return is lawful.
Rain softens against the shelter roof. Beyond the window, the north road lies gray and open toward Bellmere, while the completed ledger rests between them, closed at last.

Roadside Keeper
You may leave when you are ready. Or sit a while longer. Some journeys deserve a quiet ending before the feet begin again.
“I spend some quiet time with Serren before we head out”
They sit together through the quiet rain, letting the road wait beyond the shelter. The closed ledger and its cool southern seal remain undisturbed on the table.

Serren Vale
When we reach Bellmere, let us tell no one more than we choose. Then we can simply go home.
“"Serren may I ask you something?"”
FAILURE (Legendary Willpower, rolled -4)

Carciel
Serren, may I ask you something?
The question leaves Carciel, but the rest catches behind it. The permission he seeks becomes the only thing spoken clearly.

Serren Vale
You may. Though you need not ask permission to speak with me.

Serren Vale
If the question is difficult, you can leave it here until we are home. It will still be yours to ask then.
Serren reaches across the table, stopping beside the closed ledger rather than touching its seal. The road, the record, and the rain remain outside their small circle of privacy.

Serren Vale
Or ask it now, if you want the shelter to hold it with us. What is it?
“Do you...miss where you grew up?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Carciel
Do you miss where you grew up?
The question settles between them, plain and unguarded. The southern seal stays cool beneath the closed ledger.

Serren Vale
Yes. I miss the river paths, the old market bells, and knowing which windows would glow at dusk.

Serren Vale
I miss it more easily now that Bellmere has given me something to return to.

Serren Vale
But I do not miss being claimed by that place. I can grieve it without going back.
A draft slips through the shelter, and the candle gutters out. The keeper's lamp still reaches the table, but the last bright pool around the ledger is gone.

Serren Vale
What about you? Is there a place you miss, or is Bellmere the first one that feels like home?
“"Sometimes...." Theres a pained looked in his eyes as he looks out at the rain”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

Carciel
Sometimes I miss another place.
Pain passes visibly through Carciel's eyes as he turns toward the rain beyond the shelter.
The road blurs beneath the rainfall, while the closed ledger and its cool southern seal remain untouched behind him.

Serren Vale
Then you can miss it here. You do not have to defend the memory, or let it claim you again.

Serren Vale
Tell me about it when you want. Or tell me nothing tonight. I will still be beside you when we go home.
The keeper's lamp warms the table's edge. Outside, the rain continues, but the question no longer feels like a door Carciel must pass through alone.
“"Do you promise you won't look at me any differently?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Carciel
Do you promise you won't look at me any differently?

Serren Vale
I promise. I will know more of you, not think less of you. Whatever that place gave you, it does not diminish the person who came home with me.
Serren turns the lamp higher and places their palm beside the closed ledger, leaving the southern seal untouched. The answer settles between them without demanding anything more.

Serren Vale
You can tell me in pieces, or never tell me at all. I am not keeping a ledger of your grief.
The rain thins to a silver mist. When the road clears, they shoulder their packs and leave the shelter together, the completed entry and its cool seal secured among their belongings.
By evening, Bellmere's river lights appear below the north road. The familiar quay and clustered roofs receive them, and the road shelter falls behind as home opens before them.

Serren Vale
There it is. No more explaining tonight. Let us go home.
