Dust settles through the narrow seam in the wall as Shimo ducks into the concealed passage. The stairwell noise falls away, replaced by close breathing and the scrape of boots shifting on stone.

He sits where the passage widens by a handspan and starts tending the cut on his forearm. Kaelen and Wulf keep watch out of habit, but their shoulders ease a little in the dim.

Wulf

Wulf

For a cursed run of stairs, this is the first still moment we've had.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You patch that clean, or it will split again when we move.

The Laborer hugs the corner, peering into the dark tunnel ahead, then back at the three of them. His grip loosens on the wall only when no one orders him to stand.

Bram

Bram

If we are found in here, I am done for. But if your path is true, I will take it.

Shimo

Shimo

The wound is shallow enough to bind and keep moving.

For a heartbeat, nothing presses them. Only stone, breath, and the faint draft from below wait with them, as if the passage itself is listening.

✓ Quest Accepted

Stay hidden from the patrol

I tend to my wound to properly patch it up so it won't impede my moves. I also ask the laborer the following " first let me introduce our group and I hope you do the same so we can more easily call each other. Also what is your stake in this and can our goals be met to rid the Iron Company of out of our town and lives? I also want you to be assured that you can leave the rough fighting to us as you recover your strength since you have good intentions." I also will share some food and water from my water skin with the group with a statement of "we're in the thick of danger so we need to keep our strength to match our wits and a empty stomach won't allow that."

FAILURE (Fair Healing, rolled -2)

Shimo tightens the cloth again, slower this time, working the knot until the sting settles into a dull pull. The cut resists his first press, then holds enough for movement.

Shimo

Shimo

We should know each other’s names if we are going to keep moving together. Tell us yours, and your stake in this. If our goal is the same, we can drive the Iron Company out of town and out of our lives. Leave the hard fighting to us while you get your strength back.

Bram

Bram

I am Bram. I haul stores for them, and I know where they keep the worst of their habits hidden. If this ends with them gone, then I want that as much as you do.

Shimo passes around food and the skin. Wulf takes the first bite without ceremony, Kaelen accepts only after a glance toward the tunnel, and Bram drinks like a man afraid the cup may be taken away.

Wulf

Wulf

That is a proper camp supper, even if the camp is a coffin.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Your bandage slips. Hold still a moment longer, or you will spend the next climb cursing that arm.

Shimo’s knot catches on the fresh cut and pulls it open a finger’s width before he can finish. Bram glances at the blood, then at the sealed seam key in his palm, and taps the stone beside him.

Bram

Bram

There is another way below the hall. Narrow, but it keeps to the wall. If we must wait, we wait there.

SUCCESS (Fair Healing, rolled +0)

Shimo tightens the cloth with a steadier pull this time, then folds the spare edge over the cut and binds it flat against his forearm. The sting fades to a tight, workable ache.

Shimo

Shimo

We should know each other’s names, and our stake in this. If we share the same aim, we can drive the Iron Company out of town and out of our lives. Leave the hard fighting to us while you recover your strength.

Bram

Bram

I am Bram. I haul stores for them, and I know their habits better than they deserve. If this ends with them gone, I am with you.

Shimo breaks the food apart and passes it around with the skin. The little circle loosens, shoulders lowering as each man takes what he can.

Wulf

Wulf

That is proper camp fare, even in a coffin of stone.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Your arm will hold now. Good. We do not need it giving out on the stairs.

Bram lifts the key, taps the wall beside the seam, then leans closer and lowers his voice. Kaelen stills at once, listening.

Bram

Bram

There is a narrow way below the hall, tight to the wall. If we must wait, we wait there.

Then I gather our group of drek, Wulf, Kaelen and myself to be led the way by Bram to the area he mentioned for us all to share info and plan the next move. I do a slight subtle signal to Kaelen to see if Bram is telling the truth. I want to believe him and can see why he would tell the truth to help his own survival and put the end to the Iron Company tyrannical rule

Shimo gives Kaelen the smallest sidelong glance, just enough to ask a question without words. Kaelen catches it, shifts his weight, and gives a tiny nod toward Bram.

Shimo

He tracks the key, the seam, and Bram's face.

Shimo rises with the others, careful of the tight passage, and lets Bram lead them toward the narrow way below the hall. Wulf falls in behind with an easy step, while Kaelen keeps close enough to watch both Bram and the wall.

Bram

Bram

If I lie, we all die in this stone pocket. I know the hall, the stores, and where their men get lazy.

Wulf

Wulf

That is a fair oath, for a man in your boots.

Bram presses the key to the hidden seam and draws the panel just wide enough for them to pass single file. Dust slips down from the edges as cold air breathes out from below.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He is telling the truth, or he has the best nerve I have seen all night.

They bunch together by the opening, listening to the hush under the hall. Then, from the far side of the wall, bootsteps scrape past, close enough to set the stones humming. Everyone freezes at once.

Halt our movement and see what's going on if able to also wait in patient silence . Might need to prepare to withwr slip away quickly or be ready to blind or silence the would be alarm for the rest of the fort

Shimo lets the passage hold its breath. His shoulders settle, his feet stop shifting, and he keeps his rucksack hugged close so not a thread of it stirs.

Kaelen lowers his own movement to a near standstill, bow tucked in tight. Wulf eases his raised hand down inch by inch, eyes locked on the seam.

Bram stays braced at the crack in the wall, key still pressed to stone. The hidden panel trembles faintly as boots scrape past on the far side.

The patrol does not stop. Through the thin gap, a heel drags, a buckle clicks, and cold air shivers through the opening with the sound.

Shimo remains patient and still, reading the rhythm of the steps instead of chasing them. The others follow his silence, all four men pinned by the same thin wall.

Then the footfalls move on, fading a little toward the hall, but the last scrape lingers just beyond reach. Bram glances toward the seam and waits for the next sign before anyone dares breathe out.

I still have us keep silent and wait out the patrol since they haven't noticed our presence and we are already in a good advantage with being hidden. I will signal the others silently the plan so we are all on the same page

Shimo lifts two fingers, then eases them flat, a quiet sign for hold and wait. He keeps his chin angled toward the seam, letting the others read the command in his stillness.

Kaelen answers at once, tightening his stance and sinking his bow closer to his side. Wulf lowers his shoulders and stills his breath, eyes fixed on Shimo for the next cue.

Bram eases the key away from the stone by a hair, but does not close the crack. Cold air keeps threading in, thin as a knife edge.

Outside the wall, the patrol turns back toward them. Boots scrape on packed floorboards, then stop so close that the sound seems pressed into the plaster.

A muted voice mutters on the far side, followed by the clink of a buckle and the soft thud of a staff set down. No one inside the passage moves.

Shimo keeps the group in place, and the silence holds. The hidden panel stays open a crack while the patrol lingers just beyond the wall, forcing everyone to wait for the next step.

Keep holding our position and wait to see if the patrol will move away so that we can close the opening that could allow pursuers to follow if we can. We already have the advantage with being hidden so we can still hold that for us. I also signal silently to hold and wait for word of a clearance

Shimo lets the silence do the work. His hand stays low, palm down, and the others answer by freezing harder than before.

The patrol shifts outside the wall, boots scraping once, then drifting away by a few paces. The crack in the panel still leaks cold air, but no one speaks.

Bram waits one more breath, then draws the hidden panel in until the seam nearly vanishes. The key gives a tiny, dry click as he steadies it.

Kaelen eases his bow lower only after the last footstep thins out. Wulf keeps his eyes on the stone, jaw tight, ready for the next sound.

A dull knock passes through the masonry from the corridor beyond, followed by the patrol’s voices fading down the hall. The passage remains dark and cramped, but the danger shifts away.

Shimo gains the stillness he asked for, and the narrow route stays theirs. The cost is the strain of waiting, every shoulder held rigid until the last echo dies.
