The laborer steps out of the dark, no longer shaking. In his fist is a heavy iron key, and behind him the stair below swells with booted voices.

Bram

Bram

Spare me from the guards, and I lead you to the men who truly run this place. Not the captain. The masters above him.

Kaelen shifts by the wall, bow half raised. Wulf stares hard at the key. Drek keeps one shoulder toward the sealed spur, listening to the climb below.

Bram

They hide behind ledgers and sealed doors. A pair, maybe more. They pay for this war, and they meant to let the rest of you bleed for it.

Shimo

Shimo

He knows where they are.

The first reinforcements reach the landing, and the corridor tightens around Shimo and his companions. The laborer does not flinch. He only holds out the key, waiting for a bargain or a blade.

Wulf

Wulf

If he is lying, I will know it quickly. If he is not, we move now.

Below, more armor scrapes on stone. Above, the iron key glints in the laborer’s hand, pointing toward the next door, and the hidden heart of the Iron Company.

I accept the laborers offer and have him guide us. First though I usher us into a hidden area or a spot for us to get away from the fellow guards so we can get a brief respite and hear out the laborer and his information in depth and also double tap captain Vane to make sure he isn't coming back or alert the others with words

SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -3)

Shimo takes the key and motions everyone back from the stair bend. Drek braces the sealed spur door with his shoulder while Kaelen keeps the bow trained on the lower steps.

Wulf and the laborer slip into the shadow of a narrow storage recess off the landing, just deep enough to hide them from the stairwell. The clatter below dulls a little, but it does not stop.

Shimo

Shimo

The key is for an inner door, not a passage for common hands.

Shimo kneels by Captain Vane and checks him fast, then drives the captain’s own sword pommel down beside the helmet with a hard, final crack. Vane lies still.

The sound echoes up the stone, and the laborer winces. Kaelen’s eyes flick once toward the stair, then back to Shimo.

Bram

Bram

That settles it. If you mean to hear me properly, move now, before those below reach this landing.

Drek peels away from the door and points toward the recess, already listening for weak stone and hidden ways. The group settles into cover, key in hand, with the next lock waiting in the dark.

Hear the laborer’s information

I accept the laborers offer and have him guide us. First though I usher us into a hidden area or a spot for us to get away from the fellow guards so we can get a brief respite and hear out the laborer and his information in depth and also double tap captain Vane to make sure he isn't coming back or alert the others with words

SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +2)

Shimo eases the laborer deeper into the recess, out of the stairwell’s line of sight. The landing noise keeps rolling below, but here the stone swallows most of it.

He crouches by Captain Vane again and gives the unconscious man one last hard check, then hauls the captain’s arm in tight so it cannot flop loose on the steps.

Wulf shifts first, taking the mouth of the recess, while Kaelen angles his bow toward the bend. Drek stays near the sealed spur door, listening to the wall with a grim, practiced stare.

The laborer swallows and thrusts the key forward between both hands. His voice drops to a whisper. "There is a hidden way off the landing, if you mean to hear me without the whole stairwell hearing us."

Shimo

Shimo

The key is meant for something inside the walls.

Shimo keeps his group tucked in cover and follows the laborer’s lead into the darker pocket beyond the recess, where the stone narrows and the air turns still.

Behind them, the captain lies silent and unmoving. Ahead, the laborer points toward a seam in the masonry and waits for Shimo to decide whether to trust what comes next.

I'll trust the laborer to leading us to a secure secluded area so we can discuss more details. All the while to make sure the group slips away silently and cover our tracks the best we can from our soon to be persures

Shimo takes the laborer’s cue and slips the group deeper into the hidden pocket, one quiet step at a time. Wulf folds in behind him, Drek shadows the wall, and Kaelen keeps his bow angled low so the string never snaps. No one speaks above a breath.

The laborer crouches by the seam and presses the iron key into a narrow socket half-lost in the stone. The block shudders. Dust sifts down in a thin gray veil.

Bram

Bram

Keep still. If this door takes notice, it answers only to patience.

The masonry gives with a dull click, and a black gap opens behind it, just wide enough for one man at a time. Cold air leaks out from inside the wall.

Wulf

Wulf

That is a better hiding place than a stairwell.

Shimo guides them in without a scrape of boot or armor. Behind him, the recess is left neat, the seam shut again as the laborer palms the key and glances toward the stairs.

Bram

Bram

There. Now you hear me first, and not the men hunting us. The company keeps its leaders below the hall, past the old store rooms. I can show the way, if you keep me breathing.
