The air in the mercenary billet is thick with the scent of roasted meat and pine needles. Shimo steps into the common room just as the festivities reach a fever pitch.

Kaelen

Kaelen

If I can just secure the captain's attention before the wine runs dry, the king will finally see my worth.

The Outlaw Archer stands by the roaring hearth, his eyes darting toward the heavy oak doors. He shifts his weight, his fingers twitching toward the quiver at his hip.

Shimo

Shimo

He seems far too focused on the hearth to notice the sparks landing on the dry tapestries nearby.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You there, traveler. You look like a man who knows how to keep a secret. Would you care to make a wager on who serves the king better?

Before Shimo can reply, a stray ember catches the corner of a hanging banner. The fabric curls into black ash, and the flame begins to climb the wall with sudden, hungry speed.

Escape the burning billet

Look around the room for a bucket with water or non flammable liquid to put out the fire before the whole place burns down and bring attention to the fire that's growing to the other patrons

The patrons are too drunk to notice the wall turning into a torch.

Shimo scans the chaos, spotting a heavy iron bucket of dregs near the cellar door. He sprints across the floor, vaulting over a bench to reach it.

Shimo

Shimo

Fire! Look to the hearth, the tapestries are burning!

His booming voice cuts through the tavern din, drawing every eye toward the flame. Shimo heaves the bucket upward, splashing the murky water directly into the center of the mounting blaze.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He has a knack for grabbing the spotlight. Unfortunate, but useful.

The fire hisses and dies in a thick cloud of acrid smoke, leaving the wall scorched but intact. The room falls into a stunned silence until a mercenary drops his tankard in shock.

Apologize for the sudden outburst and wishes everyone a nice drink to go with their evening. Then proceed to speak with the mercenary that spoke to shimo I'm the first place

Shimo

My apologies for the loud alarm, everyone. Please, let us return to our evening. Drinks are on me for the next round.

The tense room exhales in unison. Shimo tosses a heavy coin onto the bar, and the tavern master grunts, immediately setting to work pulling fresh pints to appease the crowd.

Kaelen

Kaelen

A calculated show of humility and wealth. He plays the hero and the patron with equal grace.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You certainly know how to command a room, friend. Most would have let the wall burn just to see the chaos.

Shimo steps toward the archer, who leans casually against a nearby support beam. The man gestures toward a quiet corner, his eyes sharp and appraising.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Come. If you have gold to spare for common room drinks, I imagine you have a story worth telling. Why save a burning wall for a group of mercenaries who would just as soon rob you?

Well we all need a safe haven to rest up from our burdens and stress from our lives so I couldn't stand to do nothing if I could help make a change to possibly save it. If it did came to self preservation, that'd be a last resort. I can't help others as a corpse, plus I wouldn't be able to stand myself if I chose to do nothing and watch

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Shimo

Shimo

We all need a safe haven to rest from the burdens of this life. I could not stand by and do nothing when I had the chance to preserve this place.

Shimo

Shimo

Of course, I value my own life. I cannot help others if I am a corpse. But I could not live with myself if I chose inaction over lending a hand.

The archer falls silent, his gaze tracing the faint white line of the scar on Shimo's forearm as he weighs the sincerity of the words.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He truly believes he is a saint. Or perhaps he is simply the most dangerous kind of fool.

Kaelen

Kaelen

A martyr who also keeps his coin purse full. That is a rare combination, Shimo.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Tell me, if I were to tell you that these men you just saved would happily slit your throat for that same purse tomorrow, would you still offer them a drink?

They are free to choose what they wish to do as do I. The sad thing is that if it came to endangerment of my life, I'd do all I can to survive. Be it giving up coin to buy my life since I can get more. To fighting for my life if they are blood thirsty, and they'll have a fighter that won't give up until his last breath. I have a important thing I must do and I need to stay alive to do so.

Every person here has their own path and their own choices to make, and I respect that freedom. If someone truly meant me harm, I would fight until my last breath to defend my life, because there are people back home who depend on me surviving.

Shimo

Shimo

His hand is twitching toward his knife even as he mocks me.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Fighter to the end, then. I suppose even saints have a jagged edge underneath the robes.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He is not lying about the struggle. There is genuine steel in those eyes, not just charity.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You talk of duty to family, but you gamble with your security here. Tell me, Shimo, what is this great, urgent duty that makes a man like you risk his life for a room full of cutthroats?

The archer leans forward, his cynical smirk replaced by an expression of sharp, predatory curiosity, waiting for an answer that could define your worth in his eyes.

Though strangers these folks are, we all have a common reason to being here. A brief rest from our tiring lives. From common farm work, to mercenary life or death stakes. We all want and need a rest and in that period we all are tired and vulnerable no matter how much we try to hide it. I've been there and have seen both the good and evil people can do in that tired state. If I can help stave off the evil, tired temptations for even a moment for anyone. Then I know my family and myself would be proud and maybe that could spark some hope in others to maybe hesitate in the crucial moments of whether or not to follow through a uneeded evil act

Shimo

It is simple enough. When someone is exhausted, when they are at their breaking point, they are most prone to cruelty. I have seen the damage a tired, desperate man can do. If I can provide a moment of peace, a bit of kindness, maybe it is enough to make someone hesitate before they choose harm.

Shimo

Shimo

He is listening closely now, the derision in his eyes finally fading into something resembling confusion.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Hesitation is a death sentence in this line of work, Shimo. You are betting your life on the hope that a stranger might find a soul they buried long ago.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He truly believes it. He is either the most dangerous man I have met, or the most foolish.

The archer sighs, pushing his tankard aside as if the weight of the logic is more taxing than the fire itself. He leans back, his eyes searching yours with a newfound gravity.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Your family must be saints to raise a man who treats enemies like brothers. Tell me, if this place had burned to ash tonight, would you have still looked for survivors, or would you have walked away with your purse intact?

Definitely would look for any survivors to at least stay true to myself. If any found then good. As for those who didn't make it. It's a shame, but that's life. It gives and takes and as far as this line of work with hesitation being a death sentence. I agree, but I didn't sense that enemy life threatening aura from this place. Just the same tiredness that didn't notice the growing fire, hence my action to at least do something rather than nothing or willingly let lives potentially fade out due to inaction. The world is cruel and I refuse to be another statistic of that cruelty

Shimo

Shimo

He is watching my hands. He is looking for a lie, but he will not find one there.

Kaelen

Kaelen

A statistic. You have a poetic way of looking at a slaughterhouse.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He actually means it. Every word. It makes me want to break him or protect him, and I am not sure which is worse.

The archer reaches into his heavy leather belt, drawing out a small, jagged piece of flint. He taps it against the table in a rhythmic, unsettling cadence.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You are a strange man, Shimo. If you truly wish to preserve life, you should know that a group of scouts is heading for the northern gate tonight, and they are not interested in paying for a drink. Will you stay here and hope for peace, or will you follow me to ensure those people remain alive?

I want to insight him to see if his statement is true

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +2)

Shimo

Shimo

His eyes are scanning for a tremor in my pulse, yet there is no deception in his tone. He genuinely expects this betrayal.

Shimo

Shimo

I will go. If those scouts mean harm to the innocent, then silence is just as loud as an oath broken.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He does not even hesitate. The boy truly believes his presence is the difference between life and death.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Your confidence is either a divine blessing or a death sentence, Shimo. Keep your boots quiet and follow me. We leave through the kitchens.

The archer stands, his movements fluid and practiced, and tosses a small, leather-bound map onto the table. It marks the northern gate with a deliberate, ink-stained cross.

Shimo watches him carefully, sensing the weight of the moment. The archer is not just testing him anymore; he is committing them both to a path from which there is no easy return.

Kaelen

Kaelen

He bargains for answers while the blade is at his throat. Perhaps he is more than just a naive optimist.

The archer reaches into his heavy cloak and produces a small, iron key tied to a piece of cord, pressing it firmly into Shimo's palm.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Take this. It opens the small postern gate behind the kitchen. If we get separated in the chaos, do not wait for me. Go straight to the bridge.

A distant, rhythmic thud echoes through the tavern floor, growing steadily in intensity. The northern gate is already under siege.

Shimo

The wood is cracking under the pressure of the assault.

Kaelen vaults over the table, his hand finding the grip of his recurve bow. He kicks the kitchen door open, revealing a haze of smoke and the frantic clatter of retreating cooks.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Stay low. The main corridor is likely filled with scouts by now. Use the larder to flank the courtyard.

A heavy wooden beam crashes down, sealing the path they just traversed and leaving them trapped between the kitchen's heat and the encroaching enemy forces.

Stay hidden as Kaelan said, look around for scouts and any targets that could be picked off easily by Kalean's archery. While I seek to keep our backs covered from any sneak attacks

The smoke is dense but the rhythm of footsteps outside follows a predictable, frantic cadence.

Shimo presses his spine against the cold stone of the larder wall, his eyes tracking the shadows of three scouts passing the threshold. He spots a loose rack of iron spits, perfectly positioned to trip the unwary.

Shimo

Shimo

Three of them, Kaelen. They are moving toward the courtyard. If you take the lead, I can knock this rack into their path to pin them down for your shot.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You have a keen eye, Shimo. Wait for the signal, then make your move. I will be ready.

Shimo eases the heavy metal rack, his grip firm and steady. As the scouts enter the narrow corridor, he kicks the iron frame with precision, sending it clattering across the floorboards.

The scouts stumble into a tangled heap of iron. Kaelen steps from the shadows, his bow drawn, eyes locked on the fallen men as he waits for Shimo to follow up with the next strike.

I ready my axe and strike along with Kaelen to silence the scouts in a swift manner so they can't call out to alarm others

Now, Kaelen!

Shimo lunges forward, his axe whistling through the smoke to deliver a swift, decisive strike to the leader of the dazed scouts. The steel bites deep, silencing the man before he can gasp a warning.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Clean strike, Shimo. The other two are dealt with.

The archer lowers his bow, checking the bodies to ensure the threat is neutralized. Silence returns to the corridor, save for the crackling of the fire elsewhere in the billet.

Shimo

Shimo

We cannot linger here. If those scouts were silenced, others will come to check on them soon.

I search the bodies of the scouts for anything useful. Stuff like healing potions, intelligence of the groups plan for the area they're attacking and most importantly any signs of who they are or are working for to know for later from Kaelen when things calm down. All the while also making sure to not let the enemy get the drop on us

Shimo drops to one knee beside the sprawled scouts, keeping his shoulders angled toward the dark end of the corridor. One hand works fast through a belt pouch, while his eyes keep cutting back to the shadowed passage.

His fingers find a small stoppered vial, a wax-wrapped packet of herbs, and a folded scrap of oiled cloth marked with a crude map line toward the northern gate. Two of the men wear the same stitched cord at the wrist, a sign of the same company.

Under a loose collar, Shimo spots a lead token stamped with a broken spear. Tucked beneath it is a narrow note, damp but readable, naming a watch-change at the bridge and a signal lamp by the postern.

He gathers the salvage into his rucksack, then slides one scout's knife aside with his boot so it cannot be snatched up. The corridor stays quiet, but he never stops listening.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You found more than I expected. The bridge and postern, that is useful.

Kaelen takes one step closer, bow half-raised again as he peers into the smoke. He nods at the lead token, his mouth tightening with recognition and concern.

Show me that note. If we move now, we can use their watch-change against them.

Shimo straightens from the bodies and passes Kaelen the note and token without a word. The archer snatches them, eyes flicking once over the bridge mark, then toward the smoke-dark corridor.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Good. We use their changeover, cut the watch short, and make them blind before they know we are here.

Kaelen slides to the corridor wall and peeks into the shadow, bow now held low for silence instead of a shot. He jerks his chin for Shimo to come in tight behind him.

Shimo

Shimo

Then let’s keep taking them quietly.

The two move as one, Shimo taking the lead on soft steps while Kaelen shadows him with the bow tucked close. Smoke curls along the floor, but the far end of the passage stays empty.

At the bend, Shimo spots a lantern glow beyond the darkness and the faint outline of a lone scout facing away from them. Kaelen freezes, then angles two fingers toward the throat, asking for silence and timing.

Shimo slips forward into position, and the pair are set for another clean ambush, hidden by smoke and the watchers’ own routine.

As done before, shimo will ready a decisive strike to silence the cout to keep his and Kaelen's presence unknown to the enemy. Of course with full intention to keep quiet and stealthy as the night is the mindset shimo is mentally prepping to steel his resolve

Shimo eases out from the wall and sets his weight low, every breath measured against the smoke. Kaelen stays still behind him, eyes on the lantern bend.

The scout at the glow shifts, just enough to expose his throat. Shimo slips in behind him like a shadow given hands.

One quick grip, one sharp pull, and the scout drops without a cry. His lantern rocks, then steadies in a trembling pool of light.

A folded strip of waxed cloth falls from the scout's belt, marked with a crude bridge tally. Shimo catches it before it touches the floor.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Clean. He does not even get a breath out.

Kaelen glides forward and lifts the lantern higher, peering into the newly opened bend. Beyond it, the corridor gives way to a darker stretch of passage.

Smoke thins for a heartbeat, and the far end shows a dim doorway leading away from the kitchen wing. Kaelen tilts his head toward it, already moving.

Follow Kaelen's lead after doing a quick check on the body again for immediate, useful items. Healing potions, a spare dagger in case me axe is beyond my reach. All while being stealthy as we have done thus far. I feel my resolve getting stronger to do the necessary work to make the town safer afterwards

Shimo keeps low and slips to the scout’s side, searching fast by lantern spill. The body yields little, just a spare knife strapped awkwardly under the belt and a shallow leather pouch.

No vial. No healing draught. Only a smear of ash, a coil of twine, and the knife, half-hidden beneath the tunic.

The corridor is still active. There is no time to linger.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Leave it. Listen.

Kaelen freezes at the bend, lantern raised just enough to catch the dark. Faint footsteps scrape somewhere beyond the doorway ahead, careful and close.

A wavering orange flicker swells under the smoke. The far passage is no longer empty, and the new light says someone is coming from the other side.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Now.

Kaelen snaps his head toward the encroaching light, bowstring pulled taut. Shimo is already pressed into the shadow of the doorframe, blade drawn and held low against his thigh, watching the doorway with predatory patience.
