The corridor tightens into a hard, torchlit seam of stone and breath. Shimo and his companions flatten against the wall as boots and murmured orders draw near.

Captain Vane
You there. Halt. What is this stretch meant to serve, and who was here last?
A laborer with a grimy cap freezes under the captain’s stare, clutching a coil of rope to his chest.

Bram
Just the service run, captain. I hauled lime sacks through an hour ago. No one else passed me, not that I saw.

Drek
If Vane looks this way, we are done.

Wulf
Quiet. Let him talk himself past us.
Vane steps closer to the laborer, suspicion sharpening his posture while Shimo, Drek, and the others hold still in the shadowed fold of the wall.
“I assess the situation. Wanting ti see if this is the Vane the head of the Iron Company that we've been looking for. How the rest of the team is doing and feels about a possible take out of Vane that has landed in front of us. To also see how on guard Vane is or lack there of due to his interrogation of the labor person. To finally see how Kaelen is doing for a possible coordinated attack on Vane if that seems wise for us to end this madness swiftly”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Shimo’s quick scan locks the pieces together. The man in the center is Vane, or at least the captain everyone here fears, because the corridor bends around his authority as if it belongs to him. He still does not look back at the wall.
Drek keeps his weight low beside Shimo, but his focus is split between Vane and the stair seam farther down the hall. Wulf watches that same gap, one breath from motion and one breath from regret.
Kaelen is back by the arch, bow raised but held in check, waiting for a cleaner opening.

Drek
That is him. If you mean to strike, the stair corner gives us the best angle, and only for a moment.
Vane’s hand drifts from the laborer’s rope toward his belt, then stops. He turns just enough for Shimo to see the hard line of his jaw and the narrow, practiced pause of a man who is not careless, only distracted.

Wulf
He is busy, but not blind. One loud step and this corridor turns on us.
Shimo’s glance costs him a sting of torchsmoke in the eyes, and Kaelen answers from the arch with the smallest tilt of his head, arrow still nocked. The captain has not noticed them yet, but the moment is thinning fast.

Evade Captain Vane's notice
“Based on the information presented and gathered. Is this a opportune moment to strike at vane and if we do is the odds in our favor?”
NO, BUT (Even, rolled 52)
The captain shifts his weight, his gaze sweeping the corridor with a predatory stillness that makes the air feel heavy. A strike now would be a gamble against a man who is already turning, and the narrow hall offers no room for a clean, decisive blow.
“For now with what we can see, I'll call off the attack on Vane and signal everyone to continue to hide so we can proceed with the plan to take over the higher ground for kaelen to get a clearer shot at vane safely”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +1)

Shimo stays buried in the dark, and the others take the cue at once. Drek eases back from the captain’s line of sight, Wulf shifts his weight toward the stair corner, and the hidden group begins peeling away from the corridor mouth in careful silence.
Kaelen catches the movement from his cover and melts farther up the side passage, bow low, eyes fixed on the higher landing. He is already choosing a new angle before Vane can pin the shadows down.

Drek
The hall weakens at the stair seam. If you want height, take the left turn and keep tight to the stones.

Wulf
Then we move now. Quiet feet. No heroics.
The laborer flinches at the captain’s attention, then lowers his gaze again as the disguised retreat slides past behind him. Vane’s hand remains on his pommel, but he does not yet break from the interrogation.
Shimo reaches the shadowed bend first, where the corridor rises into a tighter service stair. The stone here carries sound poorly, and the torchlight thins into a trembling strip above the steps.
From below, Vane’s voice hardens and starts to carry. He is no longer just questioning the laborer, he is listening for a second presence in the dark, and the stair landing ahead is the only clean cover left.
“I will continue to keep getting higher ground and lead the team stealing all the while. It's apparent that the moment of captain Vane to be put down isn't now so we will push forward to keep our advantage we have to cripple the enemy in our infiltration. I do admit and note that it's a shame about the worker getting roughed up, but if we tried and failed right there then the whole attempt and the rest of the town would be doomed to Vane and the Iron Company.”
SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

Shimo slips onto the first steps, and the others follow in a thin, quiet chain. Drek keeps one hand near the wall for balance, Wulf treads behind him, and Kaelen shifts his bow angle upward as they climb out of the corridor’s throat.
Below them, the captain’s voice sharpens at the laborer, but the stair swallows the worst of it. The group gains the landing without a clatter, though Shimo’s boot brushes a grit-slick edge and sends a few pebbles skittering down the dark seam.

Drek
Keep left. The seam in the stone runs to a storage spur, and the captain’s shadow cannot see that corner from below.

Wulf
Good. Then we use the angle and leave him talking to himself.
Shimo reaches higher ground at the bend, where the stair narrows into a tighter service shelf. The torchlight above trembles over damp mortar, and the corridor behind them sounds farther away now, though not safely far.
The landing gives cover, but the captain is still listening.
Kaelen freezes at the upper turn, one eye on the landing, the other on the corridor mouth below. A single loose pebble drops from Shimo’s path and clicks once against the stone.

Kaelen
Hold. He heard that.
“I pause the traveling to see the situation of Vane. If we can hear any signs of him making his presence nearer towards us then we will have to shuffle in stealth away and deeper onto the path up the stairs and hope for the best to keep our presence unkown”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Shimo stills at the landing and listens past the torch crackle. Below, Captain Vane’s boots shift once, then stop. The captain does not climb, but his voice cuts sharper, and the laborer answers too quickly, as if trying to fill silence before it hardens into suspicion.

Shimo
Vane stays below. He is listening, not moving.
Drek tightens his grip on the wall and leans closer to Shimo, his gaze flicking to the storage spur he named before. Wulf angles his shoulders toward the stair above, ready to take the next step if needed.

Drek
He has not got us yet. If he comes up, we slip into the spur and let the bend hide us.

Kaelen
Too much talking below. He is testing the air now.
Kaelen lowers his bow a finger’s breadth, then raises two fingers in a tight warning. From the corridor mouth, Vane’s shadow shifts across the stone, longer and nearer than before, but still blocked by the turn.
The laborer’s rope slips from his hands and scrapes the floor once. All four men on the stair freeze at the sound.

Captain Vane
Who is there?
“We stay silent, I signal Kaelen to keep his senses sharp and do what he feels is right like taking a shot if there's a 100 percent clear one to take vane out. All the while I signal Wulf and Drek to continue moving forward ahead just in case if Vane does come closer the two of them will be more hidden than me that can be a distraction”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Shimo keeps the landing still and lifts two fingers, a small signal for Kaelen to watch for a clean opening. He shifts the same hand toward Wulf and Drek, urging them onward into the stair shadow, where the bend will hide them first.
Wulf answers at once, sliding one step higher and flattening himself to the inner wall. Drek follows, quiet and controlled, his face set hard as he angles toward the storage spur he already named.

Kaelen
Only if he breaks clear of the laborer. Not before.
Below, Captain Vane’s pause stretches. The laborer makes a frightened sound and stumbles back from the rope, which drags a thin line across the stone and stops near the stair foot.

Captain Vane
Show yourself. I heard you move.
Kaelen eases higher behind his cover, bow still low, eyes fixed on the bend. Drek glances once toward Shimo, then toward the spur, ready to vanish the moment the captain commits.

Bram
I saw nothing, captain, I swear it. Just the stairs... and the dark.
The stairwell holds its breath, then Vane’s boot scrapes the first step below the turn.
“Does the stairs with the corner that we have taken the high ground now give us enough of a advantage to take out Vane as he gets closer towards us on the stairs?”
YES (Likely, rolled 30)

Shimo
The angle of the stairs is steep, and the narrow turn forces him to expose his side before he can see us. We have the height and the cover to strike him down before he even reaches the landing.

Kaelen
He is overextending himself. If he rounds that corner, he will be blind to the landing for a heartbeat. That is our moment.
“After we position ourselves in the cover of our environment, I signal the team to get ready to coordinate a strike on Vane. I'll also look and do anything else to set up our attack to be as successful as possible”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +1)

Shimo slips his hand in a tight signal, and the stairwell answer comes at once. Wulf and Drek fold deeper into the service spur, while Kaelen eases his draw to a killing stillness.

Drek
If he commits to the landing, he leaves his flank open. The hall bends there, too, and the weak stone by the post is a trap for men who rush.
Kaelen gives a single, sharp nod, then shifts his feet to the edge of the upper step, ready to spring the instant Vane shows his shoulder.

Wulf
Good. Let the captain climb into the knife instead of chasing us through the dark.
Below, armored steps scrape louder on the stair. The laborer goes silent, and the captain’s shadow climbs into the bend, sword hand leading before his eyes clear the turn.
Shimo’s repositioning holds the line cleanly, with the team set and hidden. The landing is a poised trap, and Vane is now within its breath.
“I ready myself to do a coordinated strike with Kaelen as we've done before. My breathing will be silent and calm to deliver a decisive blow against Vane as I did the guards before. I steel myself for any type of resistance if Vane can muster any since he's no ordinary opponent”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Weapons, rolled +0)
Shimo slips from cover with Kaelen a breath behind him. His blade comes up in one smooth arc, and the captain’s own momentum carries him into the strike.
Vane jerks hard, one boot slipping on the stair lip. The sword he was raising skitters against the stone, and his shout dies into a choked gasp.
Kaelen drives in at the same instant, pinning the captain’s weapon arm against the wall. Drek lunges from the spur and slams the door edge shut behind them, sealing off the stair bend.
The cut costs Shimo a sting across his forearm, shallow but hot. A bead of blood darkens his sleeve as he wrenches free and keeps his feet.

Captain Vane
Ambush...!
His cry rings once down the corridor, then Kaelen crushes it into a short, sharp silence. Below, the laborer’s chair scrapes loudly as someone else hears the disturbance.

Wulf
He is down. Now, before the yard answers!
“I ready myself to do a coordinated strike with Kaelen as we've done before. My breathing will be silent and calm to deliver a decisive blow against Vane as I did the guards before. I steel myself for any type of resistance if Vane can muster any since he's no ordinary opponent”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Weapons, rolled -1)
Shimo breathes once, slow and quiet, and the landing seems to tighten around him. He and Kaelen strike together again, a clean, practiced motion aimed to end the captain before the alarm can grow legs.
Vane tries to twist free, but the pressure lands true. His stance collapses, his sword arm buckles, and the fight goes out of him in a single ugly beat.
Kaelen holds the line as Shimo follows through, the captain dropping hard against the stone. The corridor below answers with a burst of feet and a startled shout.

Wulf
Done. Move, or they flood this stair.

Drek
The hall to the right is weak, if we need another way. But not with that noise carrying.
A hot sting flashes across Shimo’s forearm again as he resets his grip, blood dampening his sleeve. Kaelen’s eyes flick to the bend below, listening for the next set of boots.
Vane lies still at Shimo’s feet, but the disturbance is no longer his alone. From below, the answering steps climb fast, forcing the landing into a decision.
