Tarran's Story - Hunger Consumes the Horizon

The town hall groans around Tarran as she forces her bulk through the breach. Splinters rain from the shattered beams, and the villagers press tighter to the far wall, nowhere left to run.

The chalk charm smeared across the broken wall flickers weakly, its pale light already cracking under the pressure of Tarran’s breath and the falling dust.

Tarran’s head lowers, horns angling toward the crowd as her jaws part wide. The benches smash under her front foot, and the villagers recoil as one, trapped against stone.

The plea hangs in the dust-choked air. Tarran stands at the threshold of the feast, with the villagers cornered and her hunger finally within reach.

Tarran closes the distance in one heavy surge, and the front rank of villagers breaks apart under her shadow. Their cries vanish into her maw as her bite lands, fast and final.

The chalk charm on the wall flashes once, then sheds pale dust. More of the crowd stumbles backward, but there is nowhere left to retreat.

A few villagers lurch toward a low door half hidden behind fallen benches. Others freeze, staring at Tarran as her jaws work through the nearest bodies.

Cracked violet links from the broken elder's chain ritual lie tangled in the rubble, dim and useless, while the hall shakes with panic.

Tarran swallows, and the surviving villagers scatter in two directions, terror finally splintering their defense.

Tarran surges after the fleeing cluster, and the hall seems to shrink around her. Benches skid, splinters jump, and the villagers stampede straight toward the half-open side door.

A pair of them shove the door wider, but Tarran is faster. Her shadow floods the passage before they can slip through.

One villager looks back too late, stumbles, and the rush bunches up in the doorway. The chalk dust swirls into their frightened faces.

Tarran barrels into the opening, and the front of the fleeing group breaks apart as they are driven into the passage with nowhere left to turn.

The broken violet chain links lie forgotten behind her, and the side door bangs against the wall as the last escape route disappears in the crush.

Tarran bites into the packed knot of bodies at the doorway, and the passage vanishes inside her jaws. Chalk dust bursts in a white cloud as the villagers are hauled forward in a single terrified surge.

The first rank disappears at once, their cries cutting off under her crushing maw. Behind them, hands claw at shoulders and sleeves, but the crush only pulls more of them after the first.

The hidden escape route buckles under the panic. Those nearest it are swallowed from the knees up, and the rest lose their footing, sliding into Tarran's reach.

Broken violet chain links lie scattered in the dust behind Tarran, useless now, while the crumbling chalk charm smears under trampling feet. The doorway is no longer a route out, only the mouth of the feast.

By the time the shoving stops, the front of the crowd is simply missing. The remaining villagers stare at the empty space where their companions were, and one trembling arm points deeper into the hall as if there might still be some other way.
