The riders surge in, hooves slashing mud. The Guard braces, but their line buckles under the shove of horseflesh.
Frieda holds her spear across the lane, point fixed at the chest of the lead rider. Behind her, the Witness presses into the wall, shaking.

The Riders
Stand aside. Give us the man, and this ends clean.

Frieda
No. He speaks before the church and the village hears him.
The lead rider reins hard, horse sidling and snorting. His red scarf flashes in the torchlight, and the others fan wide to look for a gap.

The Witness
They know I saw it. They will kill the truth if they can reach me.
The Guard steps forward beside Frieda, shield up. The lane tightens into a trap, with the ruined tithe barn and the Bishop's men locked in one glaring line.
“Thinking quickly, she takes a torch and shoves it in the nearest horse's face, trying to cause a panic.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Frieda jerks a torch from the lane side and thrusts it toward the nearest horse’s eyes.
The beast throws up its head with a scream, hammering sideways into the riders’ line.
Mud sprays across boots and tack. One rider yanks hard on the reins, suddenly fighting his own mount instead of the witness.

The Riders
Hold it, hold it! Back the horses!
The Guard surges into the opening, shield first, forcing the lane wider by a single body’s width.

The Witness
Now, while they are split...
“"You, get away. We will hold them here." She sets the horse's tail on fire.”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Frieda twists in close to the snorting horse and drags the torch low behind its swishing tail.
The flame catches only a fringe of hair and snaps up in a thin, angry lick, more scare than fire.
The horse kicks hard, wrenching the rider’s balance and hurling the torchlight aside in a scatter of sparks.

The Riders
Out, you beast! Out!
The guard braces himself in the widening gap, while the witness flinches away from the lane edge, hands shaking at his chest.

The Witness
I can run, if you keep them off me!
The rider nearest Frieda hauls the burning tail against the mud and the horse wheels, wild-eyed, no longer facing the witness.
“The tale is not so flammable as she thought. She sets the caparison on fire.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Frieda snaps the torch up under the rider’s cloak and the wet cloth catches at once, a bitter orange bloom climbing the horse’s flank.

The Riders
Fire! Pull away, pull away!
The mount surges sideways, and the rider jerks both hands high, fighting for reins and balance as the lane spills open in front of the witness.
The guard drives forward into the gap, shield first, mud flying from his boots.

The Witness
Now, now, before they turn back!
The witness bolts for the opening, hands still trembling at his chest, while the riders twist in panic toward the smoke and the Bishop’s seal flashes uselessly in the firelight.
“"Follow me! We will barricade the church." She estimates that the solid church doors will be their best defense.”
FAILURE (Poor Athletics, rolled -2)

Frieda catches the witness by the shoulder and hustles him toward the church door, but the mud fights every step. His feet skid, his breath comes ragged, and the torchlight wobbles over the lane.

Frieda
Follow me. We barricade the church.
The witness tries to obey, yet his trembling hands snatch at empty air, and he nearly goes down again. The guard turns back to cover them, forcing the riders to hesitate.

The Witness
I am coming, I am coming... just get me inside!
Halfway to the porch, the witness loses his footing. He slams into the doorframe, not the latch, and the church door stays shut, uselessly solid before them.
Behind them, one rider hauls hard at his reins and the burning horse shies sideways, opening the lane again to pursuit. The chance to seal the doors is slipping fast.
“She opens the door herself and pushes the witness inside.”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +0)

Frieda catches the door by its edge and wrenches it open. The church breathes out cold darkness and old stone.
Without slowing, she shoves the witness through the gap. His mud-slick boots strike the threshold, and he vanishes inside on a gasp.

The Witness
Inside. Thank God, inside.
The open door reveals a narrow nave, bare benches, and a dim wall cross. One overturned stool lies just within, as if someone left in haste.

Ulrich
Get in, Frieda, now. I hold them.
Smoke rolls past the porch. The riders blur behind it, one horse rearing as the burning caparison spits sparks.
Inside the church, the witness staggers back with shaking hands raised, while the threshold stands open between sanctuary and pursuit.
“She waits for the guard to enter, then slams the door and jams the latch with her spear.”
FAILURE (Good Strength, rolled -2)

Frieda waits one heartbeat for the guard to clear the threshold, then she heaves the door inward. The wood slams shut with a hollow thud, and the church swallows the lane's smoke at once.
She drives the spear toward the latch, but the shaft skids off the iron and clatters against the jamb. The door shudders, not sealed, only jarred hard enough to complain.

Frieda
The latch is stiff, and the spear tip is too wide.

Ulrich
Leave it. I will hold the door.
Outside, a rider's boot hits the wood with a dull удар. The door bows, then holds, while dust sifts from the lintel onto Frieda's sleeve.

The Witness
They are still there... Frieda, they will not let this go.
In the nave, the overturned stool lies between them and the back of the church, and the witness's hands shake as he backs toward it, listening to the pounding at the door.
“She takes a moment to examine the church interior before making her next move.”
FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -2)

Frieda lets the church interior settle around her for a breath, but the light is wrong, dim and smoky. Her eyes catch no hidden door, only rough pews, the overturned stool, and dust drifting from the rafters.

Frieda
The nave is clear enough. Not enough time.
She shifts one step sideways, and the motion costs her the glance she needs. The loose board near the wall blends into the floor, half lost in shadow.

Ulrich
Frieda, they are forcing it again.
The door bucks inward under another удар, hard enough to rattle the hanging dust. Outside, the riders have not gone away, and the chamber offers no easy bolt-hole.

The Witness
There is nowhere to run in here...
“Someone left here in a hurry, so there must be another way out. If there is, perhaps a breeze near the opening will reveal it. She studies the interior with her torch, marking any changes to the flame.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Frieda lifts the torch and turns slowly, reading the room by flame. The smoke thins along one seam in the wall, and the light trembles there first.

Frieda
A draft. Not from the door.
She lowers the spear tip and steps toward the weak flicker. The torch flame bends, then pulls sideways along the stones near the altar rail.

Ulrich
There. By the wall.
Dust slips from a hairline crack as Frieda presses closer. Hidden hinges answer with a dry click, and a narrow postern loosens from the masonry.

The Witness
It moves... God preserve us.
The little door opens inward onto darkness and cold air. Beyond it, the church wall gives way to the old lane outside, and the way of escape is no longer a secret.
“"Quick, this way!" She escapes through the secret door and closes it behind them.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Frieda slips through the postern first, then reaches back for the others. The torchlight thins as she pulls the hidden door inward, cutting the nave off in one rough breath.

Frieda
Quick, this way!
The Guard ducks after her, shield scraping stone. The Witness stumbles through last, his hands still shaking, and Frieda takes hold of the door before it can swing wide.
She braces her shoulder, fits the old latch home, and drags the postern shut. The latch bites with a hollow click.

Ulrich
Held.

The Witness
We are out... for the moment.
On the far side, the main church door crashes again. Dust sifts from the rafters, but the hidden lane is theirs now, dim and cold beyond the seam of the wall.
“"Be still, maybe they won't find us."”
FAILURE (Mediocre Stealth, rolled -1)

Frieda draws back from the seam of the postern and goes still, spear angled low. The passage tightens around all three of them, every breath suddenly loud.
Outside, the riders’ boots and harness clatter nearer the hidden wall. Dust keeps shedding from the rafters, stippling Frieda’s sleeves and the stone at her feet.

Frieda
Be still. Maybe they will not find us.

Ulrich
If they try the postern, we are trapped.

The Witness
His hands shake harder, and he clamps them to his chest to stop the noise.
A hard thud lands on the other side of the wall, then another. The latch holds, but the door gives a faint shiver under the blows.
The Guard lowers his shield into place by instinct, and the Witness flinches at the sound, making their hiding place feel suddenly too small.
“"We have to get out of here. Is there anywhere we can hide?"”
FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -2)

Frieda ducks deeper into the passage, one hand skimming the damp stone while her spear stays tight to her side. She searches the wall seam, the floor, the shadowed corners, but the narrow lane offers only slick rock and fallen dust.

Frieda
We need another way out. Is there anywhere to hide?
The Guard turns his shield to cover her search, then shakes his head once. The Witness presses both trembling hands to his mouth and stares at the blank wall ahead, as if willing it to open.

Ulrich
No exit that I can see. Only the postern behind us, and that will not hold forever.
Another blow crashes into the door. Dust sifts down in a gray veil, and a sliver of cold air leaks through the stones, sharp enough to show that the passage itself runs false and thin.

The Witness
There was a recess here, once... no, just old mortar. I cannot tell in this light.
Frieda finds it, a shallow hollow crushed so tight between stones that nothing but a child might crouch there. It is no refuge, and the realization leaves the three of them exposed in the same breath.
“"The horses! They didn't bring their horses into the church. We must seize the horses, then we are secure!"”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Frieda slips through the postern first, then the Guard follows with his shield half-raised. The hidden lane opens to the yard, and the riders’ horses stand there riderless, stamping at the noise from the church wall.

Frieda
The horses. They bring us safety.
She crosses the yard in a quick rush, spear low, and the nearest reins are in her hand before any man can turn. Leather strains, hooves scrape, and one horse tosses its head as the line tightens under her grip.

Ulrich
Hold them, Frieda. I will bar the lane.
The Witness emerges after them, pale and shaking, but the yard itself becomes their wall. The riders are still trapped outside, their boots pounding somewhere beyond the postern, too late to seize the mounts.

The Witness
They cannot close on us now... not if the horses stay ours.
A rider shouts from the far side, fury muffled by stone, and the horses jerk against their tethers. Frieda has the yard, the mounts, and a brief breathing space, but the riders are converging on the only opening left.
“"Mount up!"”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Riding, rolled -1)

Frieda hauls herself into the saddle as the horse sidesteps under her weight. The yard lurches around her, reins biting her palms, and the mount answers her command with a sharp, ready stamp.

Ulrich
Good. Take the lead horse and go now. I will keep their way shut.
The Witness stares up at Frieda, then snatches for the second horse’s reins with shaking hands. Behind the open postern, blows thud harder into wood, and dust drifts from the church wall.

The Witness
If they break through, they have us.
One rider’s shadow flashes in the doorway beyond the lane, but he cannot get through the Guard’s shield. The yard is no longer a hiding place, it is an escape route.

Ulrich
Choose your road, Frieda. Once I move, they will know which way we fled.
Frieda sits astride the stolen horse with the hidden lane at her back and the riders still hammering behind stone. The witness lives, for this moment, but the next move is hers.
“"Give me your hand!" She pulls up the witness to ride behind her.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Frieda snatches the Witness by the wrist and hauls him up behind her. He lands against her back, gasping, his shaking hands clutching at her cloak as the horse shifts under both of them.

The Witness
I am up, I am up.
The Guard slams his shoulder harder into the postern, keeping the opening narrowed. Behind him, boots and wood crash together, and the church wall spits dust into the yard.

Ulrich
Go now. Keep him low.
The horse surges forward with a snort, taking Frieda and the Witness clear of the doorway. The second mount tosses its head as the riderless reins slap its neck, and the hidden lane yawns open ahead.

Frieda
Hold fast.
Inside the postern, one rider lunges into view and sees the escape at last. He braces to force his way through, but the Guard meets him squarely and the opening stays shut for one more heartbeat.
“"Hang on, it 's a long ride back to Castle Hammerstein."”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)
