The gate groans shut behind Frieda, and the yard falls quiet again. Cold morning air hangs over the stone, brightening the worn courtyard with a pale wash.

Sir Karl hurries after her, a sturdy staff in both hands. He catches his breath, then puts it into Frieda’s grip as if afraid she might refuse.

Sir Karl

Sir Karl

Take it. The roads will try your patience before they try your feet, and I would rather they meet this first.

His usual grin softens into something more careful. Father Heimdal stands near the wall, watching with a quiet, approving stillness.

Father Heimdal

Father Heimdal

A useful gift. A steady hand is no small mercy on a bad path.

Sir Karl gives a small nod, then glances at Frieda’s boots and the staff, measuring whether it sits well in her grasp.

Sir Karl

Sir Karl

If it helps at all, I can have the stable boy bring your pack a little way. No need to begin the day overburdened.

The courtyard settles into an easy pause, Father Heimdal’s blessing lingering in the air while Karl waits for Frieda’s answer.

Thanks for the staff. I'm sure it will be of great use. But no need to bother the stable boy. He has other duties to keep him busy.

Frieda

Thank you for the staff. I am sure it will be of great use. But no need to trouble the stable boy, he has other duties to keep him busy.

Sir Karl

Sir Karl

Then I will keep him here. A man can carry his own burden, and you should not begin yours with guilt over mine.

He closes his hand briefly over the staff, steadying it in Frieda’s grasp, then lets go with a small, satisfied nod.

Father Heimdal

Father Heimdal

A measured answer. Good. Gifts should lighten the road, not weigh on the conscience.

Sir Karl’s mouth twitches at that, and he looks from Frieda to the gate as if measuring the distance she must soon cross alone.

Sir Karl

Sir Karl

You make a fine excuse for me, chaplain. Take the staff, then. And if the road tempts you to complain about horses, save that complaint for safer company.

Unwilling to delay her departure any longer, Frieda turns to go.
