Adventure of Valornor Gladewarder 1

The Lord Commander braces a boot on a crate and points down into the cellar. The dark fissure in the wall pulses once, like a slow, hungry heartbeat.

Valornor takes the stair in one careful descent, the air turning colder with every step. Rotting wood, damp stone, and old mold crowd the narrow space.

At the bottom, he sees the answer at last, a knot of blackened twine, bone splinters, and pale wax pressed into the seam like a crude charm. It shivers whenever the tavern above creaks.

The fissure flexes wider, just enough to show a smear of cold light within. The Lord Commander tightens his grip on the stair rail, watching Valornor for the next move.

As Valornor leans closer, the freezing air around the charm suddenly stills, the malevolent pulse beneath the floorboards momentarily syncing with his own steady breathing.

He notices that the blackened twine is not tied to the stone, but merely resting against it, held in place by a faint, residual static charge that seems to be dissipating rather than guarding the rift.

Valornor lifts the charm free in one smooth motion. The twine and bone leave the wall without a tug, and the cold pressure in the cellar loosens at once.

Dust sifts from the fissure where it rested. The faint glow in the crack dims, as if something has lost its handhold.

Above the cellar stairs, the warm lanternlight steadies, but the revealed fissure still waits, thin and dark, for what comes next.
