Valornor stands on the black stone road south of the marsh. Cold mist drifts low over the old cart-ruts, and the leaning milestone casts a broken shadow among tangled roots.
Ahead, the hooded stranger keeps a careful distance near the road bend, their cloak dark against the gray reeds. They do not close in, but they do not leave.

The Hooded Stranger
You feel it too, ranger. The south road is not empty tonight.

Valornor Gladewarder
...
The stranger tilts their head toward the marsh, then toward the distant south, as if weighing two bad paths. The wind carries a faint, sour chill from somewhere below the stone.

The Hooded Stranger
If you want the breach found before it wakes again, come with me. If not, keep staring at the road and wait for something worse.
Valornor Gladewarder leaves South road beyond the marsh behind and arrives at South.
“THE CONTINUES RUNNING SOUTH . LEAVING ALL THAT IS BEHIND IN THE DUST!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -3)

Valornor reaches the southern stretch of road, where the black stone gives way to wind-bent grass and a hard, empty silence. The mist thins behind him, but the air ahead still tastes cold.
A roadside hollow opens off the track, and a figure waits there, half-hidden by a broken standing stone and reed-cloth bundles.

The Hooded Stranger
You made the wise choice. South is safer with company.
Valornor keeps moving past the hollow, not slowing for the offer. The stranger does not step after him, only watches him go.
Far back along the road, the mist swallows the bend. Ahead, a dim violet shimmer hangs low over the marsh line, weak but persistent.
The stranger remains behind him on the roadside, and the south road opens into a lonely stretch that demands a choice.
“HAVING LEFT EVERYTHING BAD TO THE NORTH. vALORNOR CONTINUES RUNNING SOUTH AWAY FROM IT.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Valornor breaks into a run, boots pounding from stone to grass as the south road falls away behind him.
The Hooded Stranger stays at the hollow, shrinking into wind-torn cloth and broken stone, too far to match his pace.
Cold air streams past Valornor's face. The road bends open ahead, empty and hard under thinning mist.
Behind him, the violet shimmer near the marsh line weakens into a distant stain, while the north vanishes into gray.
Valornor keeps running, putting clean distance between himself and everything left in the dark.
Ahead, the lonely south road offers no shelter, only open ground and the next decision.
““HAVING LEFT EVERYTHING BAD TO THE NORTH. vALORNOR CONTINUES RUNNING SOUTH AWAY FROM IT.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Valornor surges past the last bend and the road opens wide beneath him. The mist tears apart in the wind of his passing, and the dark south finally lies open ahead.
Behind him, the Hooded Stranger fades into the hollow, no longer within calling distance. The violet stain over the marsh is now only a faint bruise on the horizon.
His boots bite into grass instead of stone. The ground levels out, and for the first time in many miles nothing reaches for his heels.

Valornor Gladewarder
Clear ground. No shadows at my back.
A cold draft slides across the road and then passes on, carrying the marsh's stink away. The dying glow of the Keep is still visible far off to the north, but it weakens with every stride.
Valornor keeps his pace and gains a clean stretch of lonely road. Ahead, the grass road rolls on empty, and the next turning remains unseen.
“VALORNOR CONTINUES RUNNING SOUTH FOR ANOTHER 50 MILES.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Valornor drives south through the last long stretch of open land, his pace never breaking. The road frays into grass beneath his boots, and the old stone slips away behind him as distance swallows the north.
By the time the day leans lower, he has put the marsh, the hollow, and the stranger far behind. The violet bruise on the horizon dulls to a thin stain, and the land ahead grows empty in a new way, broad and wind-scoured.

Valornor Gladewarder
Fifty miles. No trail at my back.
A shallow ditch cuts across the road and a collapsed milestone lies split in the grass, its carved face weathered blank. Beyond it, the south road bends toward a low rise and a cluster of distant trees.
At the bend, a lean track breaks off from the road and runs west toward wet ground. Faint hoofprints and drag marks cross it, old but readable to someone with ranger's eyes.
A colder draft slides over the grass from ahead, brief as a warning, then is gone. The choice ahead is clear, road, track, or the open south.

At the fork, Valornor knelt beside the collapsed milestone and traced the old hoofprints into the mud.

Valornor Gladewarder
No more running. Not from this, not now.
He rose, tightened his grip, and took the western track where the drag marks faded into a violet sheen.
Valornor Gladewarder went on alone, past the last honest road and into the place where the marsh had been swallowed. The void's stain remained, but so did his resolve, carrying him onward with no path left to flee. Behind him, the south road fell silent, and the chapter closed in the hush before the breach.
