At the Keep’s threshold, the air tastes of iron and ash. Below the gatehouse stones, violet light throbs like a second heartbeat, and the warding chalk has been scraped into a broken circle.

The Lord Commander stands inside the ring, cloak lifted by a wind that has no source. His hands are stained with black ink, and the floor behind him bulges as if something vast is pushing up from below.

Too late. You should have stayed a scout and taken your pay.

Valornor, he lied to all of us. That thing under the tavern was never sealed, it was fed.

Guard One edges closer, steel wavering. Guard Two keeps his blade up, but his eyes flick to the swelling seam, where frost and shadow twist together.

Lord Commander, step away from the mark.

You would draw steel on your commander? Then come and prove your loyalty.

The violet seam splits wider with a wet crack of stone. Cold spills out across the flags, and the Keep shudders as the hidden thing below strains toward the surface. Valornor stands closest to the break, with bow and blade ready.

Is the thing below the Keep waking up?

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 80)

The entity stirs beneath the stone, its awakening heralded by a low, rhythmic vibration that rattles the very foundations of the Keep. It is not yet fully manifest, but the barrier between worlds has grown thin enough that the cold, hungry presence now presses against the surface with undeniable intent.

Valornor flees the Gatehouse Tavern and the Keep itself. As the whole place appears to be doomed by Harlen's foul sorcery! He runs southward on the traderoad for about a mile. Before he stops at a place that allows him a good view of the Keep.

YES (Likely, rolled 22)

Betrayal at the Keep Threshold

Valornor reaches the crest of a windswept ridge a mile south, his lungs burning from the exertion of his flight. He turns back to look at the Keep on the Borderlands, and his breath hitches in his throat.

The violet light is not just beneath the floorboards anymore. It is consuming the entire structure.

From this distance, the Keep looks like a dying ember, its stone walls pulsing with a rhythmic, sickly glow that defies the natural darkness of the Dread Marches. The entity has fully breached the surface, and the fortress is being pulled into the void.
