The Lord Commander stands in the doorway, half in torchlight, half in shadow. His hollow gaze fixes on Valornor, and the hall behind him stays dead quiet.
A faint violet pulse throbs from the blade at his hip. Frost beads along the doorframe, and the air tastes of ozone and rot.

The Lord Commander
Too late for the hall. The root of it has already taken hold.

Talonford Guard
Captain Merrow is gone. The watch is gone. What happened here?
The Lord Commander’s hand tightens on the hilt, as if fighting the urge to draw. He does not lunge. He seems to be holding something back, or being held.

Valornor Gladewarder
The violet pulse matches the corruption.

The Lord Commander
If you mean to save Talonford, follow the light below the hall. If you mean to flee, then flee now.

Assassinate the Lord Commander
“Pretending to flee, Valornor runs south. When he has gone 140 feet. He turns and starts shooting arrows at the Lord Commander.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Ranged Combat, rolled +0)

Valornor breaks south at a sprint, boots hammering frost-hardened earth. The guard is left at the door as the hall shrinks behind him, violet light spilling through the open frame.
He puts distance between them, then wheels hard, plants his feet, and draws on the doorway.

Valornor Gladewarder
Now.
His first arrow snaps across the square and strikes the Lord Commander high, forcing the man back into the threshold.
A second shaft follows almost at once, driving him deeper into the hall light as frost flakes from the doorframe.

The Lord Commander
So, you choose the hunter's path.
The Talonford Guard flinches low beside the doorway, spear still raised, while inside the hall the violet glow pulses brighter around the wounded figure.
“The Ranger yells "Talonford Guards, join me in attacking this foul fiend of evil. It appears he has already dispatched your Captain. Avenge her!!!"”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Valornor’s shout cuts across the square, raw and clear. The Talonford Guard snaps his head toward him, then the open hall, as the Lord Commander stumbles in the doorway with violet light crawling over his blade.

Valornor Gladewarder
Talonford Guards, join me against this foul fiend of evil. He has already killed your Captain. Avenge her!
The guard’s face hardens. He surges up from his crouch and thrusts his spear toward the threshold, stepping into the line of attack instead of retreating.

Talonford Guard
You heard him. Forward. For the Captain, and for Talonford.
From inside the hall, the wounded Lord Commander lifts his head. The violet sheen on his weapon flickers, and his grip tightens as if something else is pulling through his arm.

Talonford Guard
He looks half-possessed, and I smell blood and frost. If we let him stand, he reaches the square.
The guard’s shout carries farther than the square, and two more watchmen answer from the side street, hurrying in with drawn spears. Valornor’s throat burns from the force of the cry, but the warning has landed.
“The Elf once more takes up shooting arrows at the Lord Commander.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Ranged Combat, rolled -1)

Valornor looses again. The arrow snaps across the frost-choked threshold and drives the Lord Commander back into the hall.
The wounded man jerks sideways, his violet blade dipping low. Dark blood beads at his side, and the glow on the weapon flickers hard.

The Lord Commander
Enough. The light below is not the enemy. It is the door.
The Talonford Guard advances a pace, spear leveled, while the open doors shed a cold wash of violet over the stones.

The Lord Commander
If you cut me down here, you leave it caged in the dark with the dead.
Behind them, one of the arriving watchmen skids to a halt at the edge of the square, staring at the hall as frost crawls farther across the lintel.
“"Once again, you speak in riddles! What is this about the door? Also I say better caged in the dark. Then have it get free!"”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

Valornor Gladewarder
Once again, you speak in riddles. What is this about the door? Better caged in the dark than let it get free.

The Lord Commander
The door is beneath us. The hall is only the lock. Break me here, and the thing below will wake hunting.
The words land hard, and the commander’s grip slips. His blade flashes dim violet, then guttering red at the edge of the light.

The Lord Commander
The corruption rides the weapon. I kept it caged, barely. Follow the light if you want the truth, or strike and learn it when the dead answer.
A drop of blood falls onto the frost and steams. The Talonford Guard tightens his spear, and the watchman at the square’s edge freezes at the sound of cracking ice under the threshold.

Valornor Gladewarder
The lock is under the hall.
Valornor’s question is answered, but the cost bites at once, his drawn bowstring splits and snaps against his glove. Inside the doorway, the armored figure stands motionless in the violet wash, as if listening for the next move.

“"People of Talonford does your settlement have a wise Wizard or Holy man to deal with this vile situation? I've done what I could, but I want no further dealings concerning this matter.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

The guard lowers his spear a fraction, not in surrender, but in listening. The frost at the threshold still creeps, thin as breath on glass.

Talonford Guard
A wise hand, or a holy one? Aye, maybe. But not from the hall, not now.

Talonford Guard
Captain Merrow kept the shrine keys in the town chest. The priest went missing two nights ago, and the hedge-wizard left before dawn.
Inside the doorway, the armored figure shifts for the first time, just enough for violet light to catch the helm.

The Lord Commander
Too late for a charm and too late for prayer. If you mean to help this town, then tell them what stands beneath their feet.
The guard glances from the commander to Valornor, jaw set, then gives a short, grim nod toward the square.

Talonford Guard
Go to the shrine if you must. I will hold this door, and I will not let him slip back into the dark.
“"Tell me of this hedge-wizard of yours. In which direction did they go in. I'll track them down and have them return here."”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

Valornor Gladewarder
Tell me about this hedge-wizard of yours. Which way did they go, and I will track them down and bring them back here.

Talonford Guard
South-east, by the river road. Hooded, bent under a pack, gone before dawn with the mist.

Talonford Guard
They answered to no one in town, but they knew the shrine stones. If they fled, they fled with purpose.
The guard pulls a folded token from his belt and flips it into Valornor's hand, a rough chalk mark on one side, a shrine seal on the other.

Talonford Guard
Take that. Show it at the river ford if anyone asks why you are hunting them.

The Lord Commander
Careful, ranger. The wizard is not the wound. They are only where the wound breathes.
Inside the hall, the violet light gutters lower, and a cold draft spills out through the gap, carrying the smell of wet stone.
