Near the broken blockade road, the Proprietor stumbles into view, gray with terror, clutching the same small charm that has been haunting Valornor’s steps. His hand shakes so hard the thing pulses against his palm like a trapped heart.

Kaelith
Take it. Please. I cannot keep it another breath.
He nearly drops to his knees in the dust, then forces the charm toward Valornor with both hands. The air around it chills, and the road’s loose grit twitches toward the little glow.

Kaelith
I was its guardian once. The keep, the seal, the prison, all of it was mine before I ran. I failed, and now it is looking for me.

Valornor Gladewarder
So the charm is not a key for a door. It is the leash on what waits below.
The Proprietor shudders as if he hears something far off on the road behind him. He thrusts the charm closer, desperate to be rid of it, while the cold along the south road deepens.
“Does he know what is hunting him from the north?”
YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 12)

Kaelith
It is the Void-Stalker, a hound of the deep that tracks the scent of the seal's own essence. It knows I carry the anchor, and it will not stop until it has reclaimed the tether and dragged me down into the dark with it.

Kaelith
My name is Kaelith, though that matters little now. I was the one who opened the gate, and now the gate has sent its shadow to collect the debt.
“Is the Void-Stalker already tracking us?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 54)

A low, guttural howl ripples through the air, vibrating in the very marrow of Valornor's bones. The sound does not come from the horizon, but from the unnatural shadows stretching toward them from the north.

Valornor Gladewarder
The creature is not just hunting. It is already closing the distance.
“When the Void-Stalker gets within 150 feet of him. Valornor will start shooting at it with his Longbow.”
SUCCESS (Superb Ranged Combat, rolled +1)

Valornor raises his longbow in one smooth motion as the unseen thing slips within range. The first arrow cuts into the darkness, and the road seems to flinch around the impact.
A second shot follows fast, driven toward the moving shadow where its shape twists against the stones. The warped claws cast by the road snap and stretch as if struck by the force of his aim.
The Void-Stalker reels under the volley, its outline breaking apart in a smear of cold violet haze. The charm at Kaelith's side answers with a dim, sickly pulse.

Kaelith
It feels that. Keep shooting, or it finds me.
Valornor keeps the bow leveled, breathing steady, while the road ahead clears just enough to show the thing has stopped rushing straight at him. The shadows still crawl, but the chase has changed.

Kaelith
You hit it. If it breaks the tether, I may not have much time.
“I keep shooting the Void-Stalker”
SUCCESS (Superb Ranged Combat, rolled +3)

Valornor lowers his shoulders into the next shot, and the bow sings again. The arrow drives into the crawling dark, pinning a torn strand of shadow to the road stones.
He fires without breaking rhythm. A second shaft catches the Void-Stalker as it slips left, and the haze around it bursts into a ragged violet spray.

Kaelith
It is breaking, keep on it!
The charm at Kaelith's waist flares once, then gutters. The warped claws on the ground recoil, and the thing's shape thins into a stretched smear between the stones.
Valornor shifts his aim a handspan higher and looses again. The third arrow strikes true, and something unseen snaps with a dry crack inside the dark.
For a heartbeat, the road opens in a clear, cold line north, and the shadows stop clawing at their boots. Kaelith stares at the deadening charm, white-faced, as if he feels the leash go slack.

Kaelith
That hit something real. If you want the truth of this thing, now is the time to ask.
“Is Kaelith the one who unleashed it?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 25)

Valornor Gladewarder
The way he clutches that thing, like a man holding his own confession.

Kaelith
I was the one who broke the seal, Valornor. I thought I could bind the shadow to my own will, but I only succeeded in tethering it to my own blood.

Kaelith
It does not hunt the charm, it hunts the hand that opened the gate. It hunts me.
Valornor Gladewarder leaves A rocky south road above the Dread Marches behind and arrives at Talonford.
“Disgusted with Kaelith, the Elf leaves him to his own shadow. He continues south to make his report in Talonford.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

Talonford greets him with wet timber smell, churned mud, and a market square that has gone oddly thin on voices. Valornor slips in from the south road, cloak dark with travel, while the charm in Kaelith’s grasp gives one last weak pulse behind him.
He does not look back. He keeps to the street edge, boots taking him past shuttered stalls and a fountain gone green with age. Ahead, a pair of town guards stand under a signboard, watching the road with the stiff patience of men expecting bad news.
Valornor reaches the guards before anyone else can intercept him. One guard squares up at the sight of the ranger's bow and travel-stained leathers, then his eyes flick toward the distant, violet stain on the horizon.

Talonford Guard
You there. What have you brought us from the north?

Valornor Gladewarder
The breach at the Keep has fallen. The truth needs telling inside these walls.
The guard's face tightens. He steps aside and points toward the largest hall in the square, where a lantern burns behind horn-banded doors. The second guard is already moving to clear the way, but his hand stays on his spear.
As Valornor crosses the square, a wagon wheel creaks past a frozen cluster of scavengers at a side lane, all of them staring north as if they have seen the same shadow he has. The path to his report is open, but every door in Talonford feels ready to close behind him.
