The basin’s image settles on a hidden refuge beneath Ilythiir: silver wards sheltering green terraces from a sea of burning sand. Then the scene shifts.

The Elder’s younger face appears among the keepers, solemn and unscarred, while the present Elder emerges through a narrow side passage behind Nhal and Slaan.

The Elder

The Elder

I felt the memory awaken above. Kynes’s iterations were not merely historical records. Each refuge preserved a choice, and refused to become something else.

The Elder carries no weapon, only a weathered staff and a small lamp whose flame bends toward the violet doorway. Far above, Tessa and the blue-vested resident remain at the entrance.

This place preserved shelter without turning sanctuary into a kingdom. It refused ranks, possession, and the belief that survival granted anyone authority over another.

The Elder

The Elder

I can show you what that refusal cost, and what Kynes carried onward. But the remaining magic is thinning. Follow now, or this path will close into silence.

Then we should listen while the refuge still remembers. I am with you, Nhal, and the choice remains yours.

Learn what Kynes carried onward through the iterations

“Nhal’s expression tightens. “No. That is not what Sil’Thalis said. He called himself the eighth iteration in the Kynes pattern. He did not call this refuge an iteration, nor did he say the iterations were records, choices, or places.” I glance toward the fading memory. “We learned that he built this sanctuary, that he knew the Archive could turn harmless records into weapons, and that he deliberately left ways to disappear beyond its knowledge. Anything beyond that is inference.” I look back at the Elder. “So if you know what the Kynes pattern actually is, tell me how you know. Otherwise, do not turn what Sil said into something he did not say.””

No. That is not what Sil’Thalis said. He called himself the eighth iteration in the Kynes pattern, not an iteration, choice, or refuge.

Nhal

We know he built this sanctuary, understood the Archive’s danger, and left ways to disappear beyond its knowledge. Anything else is inference. If you know what the Kynes pattern is, tell me how you know.

The Elder stops beside the basin. His lamp flame steadies, and the fading image of Sil’Thalis remains behind him, silent and incomplete.

The Elder

The Elder

You are right to separate testimony from interpretation. Sil’Thalis did not define the pattern here, and I should not have spoken as though he did.

The Elder

The Elder

I know from the Hall’s oldest memory lattice and from accounts entrusted to its keepers. Kynes was the name used for a continuing work of resistance, carried through people who altered, rejected, or renewed its methods.

The Elder

The Elder

The records disagree about who first bore the name. They agree only that no single person owned the pattern, and that each bearer chose what would survive them.

Then the pattern is still partly unknown, but your source is clear. We can ask Kynes directly, without making the sanctuary answer for him.

“Nhal shakes her head. “No. That still does not follow. Ilyd Domini said he was the first to refuse inheritance, but not the first to carry the pattern. He chose the name Kynes from an older witness list because it carried no House title or bloodline claim. He said the name should mark the one who chooses, not a succession.” I look directly at the Elder. “So the pattern existed before Ilyd called himself Kynes. Sil’Thalis carried that pattern centuries later while remaining Sil’Thalis. The pattern may continue through people, but that does not make ‘Kynes’ the name of a continuing work, nor does it make every bearer Kynes.” “If your records say otherwise, show me the record. Do not fill what we do not know with a convenient story. By the way. I was formality known as Sereth, keeper of records."”

No. That still does not follow. Ilyd Domini said he was the first to refuse inheritance, not the first to carry the pattern. He chose Kynes from an older witness list because it bore no House title or bloodline claim. The name should mark the one who chooses, not a succession.

Nhal

Nhal

The pattern existed before Ilyd called himself Kynes. Sil’Thalis carried it centuries later while remaining Sil’Thalis. Show me the record supporting your account. Do not fill what we do not know with a convenient story. I was formally known as Sereth, keeper of records.

The Elder lowers his lamp. Its flame bends toward the basin, and a hidden layer of silver writing rises beneath the image of Ilyd, a middle-aged human man with a lean build, weathered brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and a dark high-collared coat, marked by several distinct hands.

The Elder

The Elder

Then the record must correct me. Here: Kynes begins as a chosen name, not a person. Ilyd adopted it after the witness list, while Sil’Thalis carried the pattern without taking the name.

The writing separates name from work in clear lines, naming Ilyd, Sil’Thalis, and earlier unnamed witnesses as distinct people. Nhal’s shadow recoils from the basin, and a thread of purple substance flakes away into the stone.

The Elder

The Elder

You are Sereth, then, and your objection is preserved. The pattern continues through choices, not succession. I mistook its continuity for a title.

Slaan

Slaan

You made the record answer honestly. That matters more than a smoother history, Sereth.
