The stones’ first song fades into a low, patient resonance. Moonlight rests on their weathered faces, and the ring grows quiet enough for every breath to be heard.

Slaan settles beside Nhal in the silver grass, folding the blank vellum map across her knees. She invokes no charm, leaving the ancient stones to answer in their own time.

I will not interpret them for you. If they speak, you may decide what their song means, or whether it means anything at all.

A faint tremor passes through the ring, not quite music and not quite silence. Far below, Phandelver’s festival lamps glimmer between the trees, distant and harmless.

You have been a keeper, a mediator, and part of an archive’s design. Those roles mattered, but they were given to you.

Slaan

Slaan

What kind of life would you choose if no archive, town, or ancient system could assign you a role?

Slaan turns toward Nhal, attentive without pressing. The stones continue their low resonance beneath the grass, leaving the question open beneath the wide, waiting moon.

Promise a self-directed life with Slaan

““Oh, these? These are the Promise Stones.” I smile. “A wizard who was part of the Kynes pattern helped create them. They're not quite Warden Stones. They hold a promise to Void-kind.” I glance around the ring. “He and his female companion helped begin the downfall of the Houses conflicts that claimed the Archive.” I pause and blush " it's a cute date though" wondering if slaan ment to bring her here”

Oh, these? These are the Promise Stones. A wizard who was part of the Kynes pattern helped create them. They are not quite Warden Stones.

Nhal

Nhal

They hold a promise to Void-kind. He and his female companion helped begin the downfall of the Houses conflicts that claimed the Archive.

Nhal glances around the ring, her purple shadow catching the moonlight between the stones. She pauses, then blushes visibly beneath her shifting features.

Nhal

Nhal

It is a cute date, though.

Slaan

Slaan

It is. I hoped you might see it that way, though I did not want to decide the meaning for you.

The Promise Stones answer with a soft, harmonious resonance. Their weathered faces gather moonlight, and the note settles warmly through the silver grass.

Slaan

Slaan

I brought you here because the promise was made to Void-kind, but also because I wanted to share somewhere beautiful with you. That part is entirely mine.

“"I promise to choose your life span with you as long as you want." I say”

Nhal

I promise to choose your life span with you, for as long as you want.

The Promise Stones fall silent for one breath. Then their harmony returns, deeper and gentler, threading through the grass as moonlight gathers around their joined shadows.

Slaan

Slaan

With me, not for me. I hear the difference, Nhal, and I accept the promise exactly as you offer it.

Slaan turns fully toward her. The blank vellum slips from her knees into the silver grass, forgotten as the stones shape a new note around the vow.

Slaan

Slaan

My years are not a debt you must carry, and your years are not mine to command. We will meet each change together, while I still want the choosing.

The resonance settles into a steady warmth beneath them. Nothing binds Nhal or Slaan, yet the promise remains audible in the ancient ring, freely witnessed and freely shared.

Slaan

Slaan

And tonight, I want this life with you. Let the stones remember that we chose it together.
