Smoke drifts under the ruined stone arches near Phandelver. Festival ribbons hang torn and blackened, and the square is full of fleeing boots, dropped baskets, and shouted fear.
Nhal stands in the shadows at the edge of the shrine, her void-dark shape catching the firelight like spilled ink.

The Thug
Back off! Elders, bring the archive keys. Now!
Inside the arch, a nervous thug presses a knife close to three festival-goers. His gaze keeps snapping toward Nhal, then back to the street, as if he expects the dark itself to move.

The Elder
We do not have them here. Let the people go, and we will talk.
The thug tightens his grip, but his arm trembles. One victim stifles a sob. Another stares past him, searching for any chance to run.

Nhal
The knife hand is shaking.
A single gust rolls ash across the shrine floor. The thug flinches hard at the moving shadow, and every eye in the arch turns toward Nhal.

The Thug
You. Shadow thing. Step out, or I cut one of them.

Save the festival-goers
“"Calm down, why are you afraid?" I ask”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled -2)

Nhal
Why are you afraid?
Nhal’s quiet question cuts through the smoke. The thug hesitates, and the knife dips a finger’s width.

The Thug
Because I am the one left holding the blade, and I know what happens if I drop it.

The Elder
Then let it fall. No one needs to die for keys.
The thug swallows hard. His grip loosens, but fear keeps him planted in place.

The Thug
If I back off, they rush me. If I stay, maybe I still walk away.
His arm shakes so badly that ash spills from his sleeve. The blade wavers farther from the festival-goer’s throat, but not enough to be safe.
“" it's ok, we all get scared" I drift over slowly”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +3)

Nhal drifts out of the smoke with her hands open, slow as falling ash. The thug flinches, but she keeps coming, calm and empty-handed.

Nhal
It is okay. We all get scared.

The Thug
She is close enough to see my hands shake.
The words land. The knife lowers another fraction, and the festival-goer gets a breath back.

The Elder
Then choose the fear that leaves people breathing.

The Thug
I did not mean for this to turn into a killing.
At that, the thug’s free hand creeps to the line of keys at his belt, half-offering them as his shoulders sag. Behind him, the hostage’s arm slips free of his grip.
“" people I think are trying to rush from you, not at you" I say”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled +2)

Nhal keeps her voice low and level. She says the people are rushing away from the knife, not toward it.

The Thug
They are not coming for me?
The thug’s grip loosens. His knife hand drops to his side, and the keys at his belt jingle as he pulls his other hand back from them.

The Thug
I thought they were charging me.

The Elder
They are fleeing, and you can still let them go.
The festival-goer slips fully free and stumbles back toward the elder, one breath away from safety.

The Thug
Then... take them. Just take them and leave me out of it.

“I pick up the keys”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Nhal moves in while the thug still stares at the ground. Her fingers close around the keys at his belt, and the jingle stops at once.

The Thug
Take them. Just... go.
The keys come free cleanly. Nhal has them in hand now, cold iron against her palm.

The Elder
Good. Keep your hands away from the knife.
The thug obeys, backing a step under the broken arch. The knife remains low, but no longer aimed at anyone.

The Festival-Goer
Is it over?
For a breath, only ash drifts between them. The shrine is quiet except for the elder's wary watch and the thug's ragged breathing.

“I nod " it's over"”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)

Nhal
Nhal gives a small nod toward the thug. It is over.
The thug sees the nod and lets out a shaky breath. His knife hand loosens, and the blade sinks toward the dirt, no longer a threat.

The Thug
...Right. Over.
The elder shifts closer to the festival-goer, one protective step at a time, while keeping his attention on the man under the arch.

The Elder
Then stand down completely. Put the knife away and keep your hands where I can see them.
The thug swallows, then slides the knife into the grass beside his boot. His shoulders sag with the effort of obeying.

The Festival-Goer
I thought he was going to hurt us.
The elder answers without looking away from the thug, voice low and steady, while the smoke finally thins to a pale veil above the broken stones.

Leave the ruined shrine
“I signal the elder to lead the others out of the ruins.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

Nhal lifts two fingers in a small, outward sweep toward the elder, then toward the path beyond the arch.

The Elder
The old man catches the signal at once, his jaw setting as duty replaces worry.
He turns his body between the festival-goer and the ruined stones, guiding them with a firm hand to move.

The Festival-Goer
Come on, before I start shaking again.
The thug stays still, hands visible, watching them go with a chastened, hollow look.

The Elder
We are leaving. You will not follow.
Smoke parts over the broken arch as the first steps carry the trio out of the shrine and into the open lane.
“I ask the elder to take the keys”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)

Nhal lifts the key ring toward the elder, offering it without ceremony. The smoke keeps thinning over the shrine stones as the last of the trio reach the lane.

The Elder
Keep them, if you mean to spare this place another scene. I would rather not see them in the wrong hands again.
He slows, turning back under the arch, one hand still raised to guide the festival-goer onward while his eyes stay on Nhal and the keys.

The Festival-Goer
You came out of the shadows and still helped us. I thought only the old stories did that.
The elder’s mouth tightens with tired relief. The thug remains at a distance, head bowed, making no move to interfere.

The Elder
Stories are easier to trust after they keep people alive. Will you come with us to the festival lane, or stay here among the broken stones?
The question hangs in the quiet gap between shrine and road, while the open lane waits beyond the arch.
Nhal leaves Ruined shrine arch near Phandelver behind and arrives at festival lane.
“I leave with the elder and festival-goer”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Festival banners droop above the lane, dust and incense mixing in the late air. Nhal comes out beside the elder and the festival-goer, their steps slowing as the shrine falls away behind them.

The Elder
That is better. I had feared we would be counting losses instead of guests.

The Festival-Goer
I can still hear my own breathing. I did not think I would.
The elder folds the key ring into his palm at last, then glances toward Nhal as if weighing a second thank-you against the first.

The Elder
You walked out with us when you had no need. That matters more than a blade ever did.
The festival-goer straightens, swallows, and gives Nhal a quick, grateful nod. Beyond them, the lane opens toward the town lights, calm and waiting.

The Elder
If you keep to the lane, you will reach Phandelver cleanly. If you prefer company, walk with us a while.
