The settlement herald turns beneath the black crystal arch and leads Nhal and Slaan through branching streets. Violet lamps mark the way without assigning direction.

The streets descend into a communal terrace carved beneath the ridges. Void-kind residents share food, shape dark stone, and trade stories around broad open fires.

Slaan

Slaan

No central hall, no appointed keeper, and no ritual demanding everyone contribute the same thing. They made room for difference deliberately.

Open doorways reveal sleeping niches softened with woven shadow, gathering chambers marked by painted constellations, and narrow paths climbing toward the settlement’s outer heights.

Here, a person may share a meal, offer craft, tell a story, or simply watch. No role is assigned because someone arrives.

Visitors may participate, observe, or leave. The choice remains theirs, as it does for those who live beneath these ridges.

What would you like to understand first, Nhal: how we live together, how we remember, or what waits along the outer heights?

“I join a storyteller by the fire and listen to their history.”

Nhal crosses the communal terrace and settles beside a broad open fire, where a void-kind storyteller sits beneath painted constellations. Slaan joins her without interrupting.

Before these terraces had names, our people traveled separately, each carrying a fragment of refuge through the ridges.

The storyteller lifts one hand, and a small constellation of shadow rises above the flames. Its points divide, wander, and slowly find one another again.

We were taught that survival required one design, one keeper, one answer. The first among us who refused that lesson built no throne. They built a place to meet.

Around the fire, residents continue their meals and crafts, listening without gathering into ranks. Slaan rests her shoulder near Nhal’s, leaving the story entirely to her attention.

Our history is not a command preserved for the future. It is a collection of voices, offered openly, so each listener may carry what is useful and leave the rest.

The shadow constellation dissolves into sparks above the fire. The storyteller lowers their hand and waits, leaving the quiet after the history as welcome as the tale itself.

“"how the settlement preserves its memories, or is it through stories?"I ask”

Nhal

How does the settlement preserve its memories, or is it through stories?

the settlement storyteller

Stories are one way. We also keep them in painted constellations, shared songs, carved stones, and living gatherings where anyone may correct what was misunderstood.

The storyteller draws two fingers through the air. Above the fire, the scattered sparks gather into layered paths, each bright point carrying a different voice.

the settlement storyteller

No single record holds the whole of us. Memories remain strong because many people may carry them, compare them, and add what they witnessed.

A child may hear an elder’s account, a visitor may notice what we forgot, and a maker may preserve the same truth in stone instead of words.

The constellation opens into several branching patterns, none brighter than the others. Around the terrace, residents quietly continue their meals, crafts, and listening.

Slaan

A memory can belong to everyone without becoming anyone’s burden. It sounds like the Hall’s lattice, but shaped by people choosing to remember together.

“" so this is what the original four crested four hundred years ago?" I ask for slaan's benefit”

So this is what the original four created four hundred years ago? I ask for Slaan's benefit.

the settlement storyteller

Not this settlement alone, but its first principle. Vaeluun, his companion, Vaeluun's void-fed ally, and Sereveth made refuge possible without making refuge another command.

The storyteller closes one hand, and the constellation above the fire divides into four distinct currents. They join beneath the settlement's branching arch, then remain visibly separate.

Slaan

So the beacon led us to the living answer, not merely the place where their promise began. They built a pattern others could adapt without surrendering themselves.

the settlement storyteller

the settlement storyteller

Exactly. They left tools, warnings, and an invitation. We changed the shape to fit our lives, as every free people must.

A resident adds a dark stone to the terrace wall. Its surface catches the firelight, revealing four old marks surrounded by hundreds of newer ones.

She wanted me to see this clearly. Not a relic demanding reverence, but a beginning that trusted others to choose what came next.

“I share the story of my meeting slaan, Kynes and Bren. Between Kynes and slaan they freed me from one of the last corrupt archives.”

I want to share how I met Slaan, Kynes, and Bren, and how Kynes and Slaan freed me from one of the last corrupt archives.

The fire lowers as Nhal speaks. Shadow constellations gather above the flames, making room for her memories without claiming them or arranging them into a single shape.

Nhal

Nhal

I met Slaan while learning what freedom could mean. Kynes and Bren became part of that path, and together, Kynes and Slaan helped free me from the archive that still held me.

the settlement storyteller

Then your freedom was not granted by one keeper. It was made possible through companionship, shared action, and your own acceptance of release.

The four old marks above the fire open, and newer points of light join them. None eclipses the others; the pattern records aid without turning anyone into its owner.

Slaan

Kynes and Bren mattered, and so did the choice Nhal made when the archive no longer had the right to define her. I am glad she can tell it here.

We will keep this account beside the others, offered rather than fixed. If you wish, Nhal, we can add the shapes of those who helped you to the living constellation.

“I agree and also share how Kynes has restored the hall of welcome to how it was prior. How the memory lattice works like myth dannor.”

Nhal

I agree. Kynes restored the Hall of Welcome to how it was before the corruption, and its memory lattice works like Myth Dannor.

The constellation above the fire reshapes itself into a welcoming hall, its many paths joining without narrowing into one central chamber. Each light remains distinct, yet all help illuminate the whole.

the settlement storyteller

Then the restoration returned more than a structure. It returned a way for memory to support everyone without making any person, record, or voice carry the entire burden.

Nhal

Nhal

Yes. The lattice preserves and organizes memories, like Myth Dannor, while distributing its magical support instead of consuming what it holds.

Slaan

Slaan

Kynes restored the Hall without restoring the old control. Its memories can remain connected, yet no keeper becomes necessary for everyone else to endure.

The four ancient marks brighten, and hundreds of newer lights answer from the terrace wall. Their currents overlap in a living pattern, preserving every contribution without erasing its source.

the settlement storyteller

We will remember that distinction. A lattice may hold a people together, but freedom lives in how freely each memory is offered, carried, and understood.
