The mountain air was far too thin for a decent nap, and the local wildlife had a penchant for cultish obsession. Wolfie turns his back on the Oakhaven pass, leaving the unconscious shadows to rot in the frost, and descends into the humid, low-hanging smog of The Hollows.

He pushes through the heavy, scarred oak doors of The Velvet Goat. The transition is instantaneous. Ozone, cheap incense, and the wet-dog smell of a dozen species assault his senses. The tavern is a sanctuary of low-rent magic and tired travelers.

If someone doesn't find me a chair that isn't cursed, I am going to manifest a sun in the middle of this room.

Innkeeper Valerius

Innkeeper Valerius

A seat for the wizard, then. You look like you have been wrestling mountain goats, friend.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Just goats, Valerius. The worst kind of mountain goats.

Innkeeper Valerius

Innkeeper Valerius

That blue-robed boy carries the weight of a dying star on his shoulders, and he looks like he wants to set it down on my bar.

*Wasn't there a dude here earlier? You couldda sworn there was some, well let's say too scholarly for this place, you don't really care, but if you smelled easy money, probably the gangs our other lowlife opportunitists did too, ugh, hate empathy.* ask

Wolfie

Wolfie

That smell of ink and old parchment doesn't belong in a dive like this. Someone is hiding in the corner booth, pretending to read a map while sweating through their fancy velvet coat.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Valerius, who is the peacock in the corner? He looks like he wandered out of an academy library and lost a fight with a mudslide.

Innkeeper Valerius

Innkeeper Valerius

Just a traveler who paid for his silence, Wolfie. I would advise against poking that particular nest. He came in holding a heavy, sealed cylinder, and he hasn't let go of it once.

Wolfie

Wolfie

If he is guarding something that shiny, he is either very important or very stupid. Both options are exhausting.

Wolfie leans against the bar, his blue eyes drifting lazily toward the shadowed booth where a nervous man grips a metal tube. The stranger catches Wolfie's gaze and visibly stiffens, his hand tightening around the cylinder until his knuckles turn white.

*Watch only*

The cylinder... there is an unmistakable, rhythmic thrumming vibrating through the wood of the booth table. It is not mechanical. It is arcane, like a heartbeat trapped in cold steel.

Scholar

Scholar

He sees me. Too closely. Why is the sorcerer staring? I need to leave before the seals on this container fail.

The scholar abruptly pushes his chair back, the legs scraping harshly against the stone floor. He fumbles with his heavy coat, clearly attempting to obscure the glowing, etched markings appearing on the side of the metal cylinder as it hums with growing intensity.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Relax, scholar. You are making quite a scene for someone trying to be invisible. If that thing in your lap detonates, the innkeeper is going to charge you double for the repairs.

Scholar

Scholar

You have no idea what you are looking at. Move aside, or suffer the consequences of your curiosity.

*He shrugs* (He follows his instinct, he's curious but his instinct, the lizard brain, calls for caution)

Wolfie

My gut is screaming at me to take a nap instead of playing hero. But that hum... it matches the frequency of a collapsing star. If he bolts, the whole tavern might blink out of existence.

The Scholar stumbles back, his boots finding no purchase on the sticky floor. His grip on the cylinder slips, the metal container sliding from his trembling hands toward the scarred oak floorboards.

Scholar

Scholar

You fool! You have no idea what you have triggered!

Wolfie

Wolfie

My instinct says let it drop and run. My curiosity says if this hits the floor, my retirement is going to be incredibly short.

Wolfie lunges forward, his hand snapping out in a blur of blue robes to intercept the humming metal before it makes contact with the floor. The air around his fingers begins to distort, bending the light of the nearby lanterns into swirling, oily patterns.

Yell at him "You're the idiot who nearly dropped it!" *Give it back*

Wolfie

You are the idiot who nearly dropped it!

The cylinder comes to a sudden, jarring halt mere inches from the scarred oak. The azure light flares with the intensity of a dying sun, casting long, frantic shadows against the tavern walls as the air around Wolfie's palm begins to crackle and pop with static discharge.

Wolfie

Wolfie

My veins feel like they are being flooded with ice water. This thing is not just a container. It is a beacon. If I keep holding it, every celestial headache in the quadrant is going to track this signature right to my dinner table.

Scholar

Scholar

You... you caught it? That should have incinerated your hand!

Wolfie

Wolfie

Consider it a byproduct of having a very long, very irritating career in babysitting. Now, stop shaking and explain why a piece of divine shrapnel is in the hands of a glorified librarian.

*make sure it doesn't go off, sigh, null space is best, most elegant solution, don't need to cloak if*

FAILURE (Great Magic, rolled -2)

Sanctuary at The Velvet Goat

The arcane seal meant to dampen the artifact snaps like a dry twig. Instead of settling, the metal cylinder shudders, vibrating with such violent resonance that the wooden floorboards beneath Wolfie’s feet splinter and groan.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Oh, wonderful. It is not just a beacon. It is a feedback loop. If I try to force it into the void now, it will likely take the entire roof with it.

Scholar

Scholar

You fool! You triggered the pulse!

A blinding, jagged discharge of sapphire energy erupts from the cylinder, throwing Wolfie backward across the room. He slams into a heavy oak table, sending mugs and cutlery clattering into the air as the device continues to hover, now spinning wildly as it bleeds raw, stinging light into the tavern.

Wolfie

Wolfie

My hands are numb. If I do not ground this current in the next three seconds, the innkeeper is going to have a very large, very glowing hole where his favorite booth used to be.

Ground it with yourself, loop it back, it'll probably give you a migraine but you've channeled worse

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Wolfie inhales, calling upon a reserve of power that feels like trying to swallow a lightning bolt. He thrusts his hands into the shimmering sphere of azure discharge, forcing the runaway current to pivot. The tavern walls hum in sympathy as the wild, stinging light bends, tethered by his will into a glowing, stagnant ring around his forearms.

Wolfie

Wolfie

That... is a headache waiting to happen.

Innkeeper Valerius

Innkeeper Valerius

Gods save us, what are you doing to my tavern?

The cylinder, now dim and drained of its erratic fury, clicks shut and drops into Wolfie’s waiting palms. The tavern remains filled with the ozone scent of spent magic, and the floating cutlery falls back to the floor with a dissonant crash. Wolfie stands amidst the splintered wood, his robes smoking, clutching the heavy, silent metal to his chest.

Wolfie

Wolfie

I am grounding a potential catastrophe, Valerius. Could we perhaps discuss the bill once I stop smelling like a lightning rod?

Don't ovedclock yourself this time, let your light be the channel

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The azure light gutters and dies, tethered safely into the cold metal of the cylinder. As the final spark winks out, Wolfie’s knees buckle. The ambient magic of the room feels like a spent fire, leaving the tavern in a heavy, ringing silence.

Innkeeper Valerius

Innkeeper Valerius

You... you didn't just break the seal. You swallowed it. Who are you?

Wolfie

Wolfie

Just a man who really wants a glass of water and five consecutive hours of dreamless sleep. My resume is currently closed for repairs.

The Scholar stumbles back, clutching his chest, his eyes wide as he stares at the smoldering fabric of Wolfie’s sleeves. The air remains thick with the scent of ozone. Outside, the muffled sound of approaching, heavy-booted footsteps begins to rhythmically strike against the tavern’s exterior walls.

Wolfie

Wolfie

I should have stayed in bed. Or at least somewhere without front-door security issues.

Scholar

Scholar

You fools! They aren't interested in the device anymore. They are interested in whoever had the audacity to stabilize its pulse!

The tavern door groans, the heavy oak panels splintering inward as the frame begins to sag under a rhythmic, singular pressure. Outside, the heavy boots stop. A stillness, sharper and colder than the winter air, seeps through the cracks in the wood. Valerius fumbles for a rusted poker, his knuckles white, while the Scholar shrinks into the corner, his eyes fixed on the vibrating handle of the tavern door.

Wolfie

Wolfie

You have a flair for the dramatic, Scholar. If they wanted the pulse, they would have kicked the door down five minutes ago. They want me, and you're just the packaging. Valerius, stay behind the bar. This is about to get expensive for your insurance.

Wolfie

Wolfie

My head is pounding, my robes are ruined, and now I have to play hero. If I survive this, I am finding a cave and sleeping for a century.

Wolfie steps forward, his fingers tracing a complex sigil in the stale air. A soft, cerulean hum resonates from his palm, not from the artifact, but from his own bloodline. The tavern door gives a final, shrieked groan as the wood yields entirely. A silhouette stands in the ruin, framed by the swirling snow outside, eyes glowing with a faint, predatory violet light. The air inside the tavern drops to a freezing chill, and the remaining candles flicker out as the intruder crosses the threshold.

Come on man, I don't really care about your drama

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Wolfie

Wolfie

Look, friend, I’ve spent eons dealing with cosmic temper tantrums. I’m tired, I’m cold, and I really don't care about your little dramatic entrance. Can we just skip the monologue and get to whatever tedious errand you're here to run?

Wolfie

Wolfie

If he tries to start a monologue, I swear I’m going to fireball his boots. I am so done with divine posturing.

Intruder

Intruder

Your apathy is a shallow mask, Arch Angel. The void does not care for your retirement, and neither do I.

The intruder steps fully into the tavern, the violet glow of his eyes casting long, distorted shadows against the splintered walls. He doesn't strike; he stands, radiating a pressure that makes the very air hum with static. Outside, the blizzard howls through the doorway, coating the floor in a fine, freezing layer of ice crystals.

*Poke* *Curiosity* *What do* *What are you*

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -2)

Wolfie

A threat? How original. You really dragged yourself through a blizzard just to recite poetry at me?

Wolfie

Wolfie

If he thinks that violet stare is intimidating, he clearly hasn't met the entities that dwell in the deep astral. It is just tacky.

Intruder

Intruder

Your pride is an anchor, little god. That beacon belongs to the void. Hand it over, and perhaps I leave your miserable tavern standing.

Intruder

Intruder

The artifact pulses with enough energy to shatter this entire mountain. He has no idea what he is holding.

The intruder reaches out, his fingers wreathed in flickering violet lightning. The floorboards beneath his boots frost over instantly, cracking under the unnatural chill.

Valerius cowers behind the bar, his knuckles white as he grips his iron poker, while the

Scholar buries his face in his hands, trembling violently.

Wolfie feels the beacon hum in his grip, the sapphire light surging in response to the intruder's proximity.

*Discern wtf you're actually holding*

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Wolfie

Wolfie

My brain is still foggy, but the rhythm of this thing isn't random. It’s not just a beacon. It’s an anchor, a tether designed to pull something much larger through a rift. If I don't let the pressure out, the entire tavern—and my nap—is going to be obliterated by a localized singularity.

Wolfie

Wolfie

You want the void, friend? Take a heavy dose of it, but hold the destruction.

Wolfie twists his wrists, forcing the sapphire energy of the cylinder to invert. The beacon shrieks, a sound like grinding metal, as the internal pressure begins to bleed outward into a controlled, shimmering vortex in front of him. The intruder freezes, his violet gaze narrowing as the ambient cold of the blizzard clashes with the sudden, searing heat of the unstable magic.

Intruder

Intruder

You would risk reality collapsing just to spite me?

Intruder

Intruder

He is reckless enough to do it. I need to strike before the rift stabilizes.
