The Awakening of the GateA vast mountain library chamber hidden beneath the archive
The Awakening of the Gate

Wolfie steps onto the hidden stairs, and the library’s distant hush falls away behind him. Black water coils around his ankles, slick as ink, as if the mountain itself is holding its breath.

Each descent feels older than stone. The air turns sharp with ozone and dustless age, and the heartbeat-light ahead grows steadier, as though it recognizes him.

Orsain

Orsain

Careful. The archive is reacting. If that gatework wakes fully, the shell may not hold.

Scholar

Scholar

The staircase was never meant to be seen... and it is opening for him.

Wolfie reaches the lower landing. The circular dais dominates the chamber, runes circling its rim in a slow pulse, and the black water on the steps begins to drift toward it.

Wolfie

Wolfie

That current... it is seeking a match. Wolfie, your magic is the key, whether you want it or not.

The pulse quickens. A seam of light opens across the dais, thin at first, then widening like an eye starting to see.

✓ Quest Accepted

Understand the archive’s gatework

✓ Quest Accepted

Determine the consequences of opening the gate

Shhh..

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

The Awakening of the Gate

Wolfie lifts two fingers and hushes the chamber. The seam of light gutters, and the rune-dais answers at once, its pulse flattening into a low, steady glow.

The black water slows mid-flow, then drifts in a thin, obedient ring around the steps instead of pouring toward the opening.

Orsain

Orsain

That is not mercy. That is command.

Scholar

Scholar

It listened to him... the archive truly listened.

For one breath, the chamber goes quiet enough to hear the water ticking against stone.

Then the dais clears further, revealing a dark throat beneath the light, and Aethelgard straightens hard at the edge of the chamber.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The gate is waking cleanly now. If it opens, the current will not stay caged in the archive.

Orsain

Orsain

Wolfie, do you see what that means, or do I have to spell it out?

Sounds like it means I won't be blocking myself anymore.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -3)

The Awakening of the Gate
Wolfie

Wolfie

Then I am not blocking it anymore.

Wolfie lowers his hand, and the chamber answers at once. The ring of black water keeps its slow circuit, but the pressure in the air eases around him.

Orsain

Orsain

You hear it, then. The archive does not merely react, it yields to a will it recognizes.

Scholar

Scholar

That is a terrible sentence to hear spoken aloud, and an even worse thing to watch happen.

The dark opening on the dais widens by a finger, quiet and waiting, while the water below it keeps time against the stone.

Wolfie

Wolfie

If the gate fully wakes, whatever is beyond it will not stay behind the archive’s teeth.

Orsain

Orsain

And if you are asking whether that is a problem, yes. It is a problem. The question is whether you understand it before it moves.

Quest Complete

Understand the archive’s gatework

New Gift: Archive Gatekeeper

You're right I don't. If you haven't been paying attention the last year or so, it's all kinda soup in here *He points at his head with his dagger* (He thinks to himself, is this a talking to a thing and healing it kind of problem or a I need to remember I used to destroy monsters and Gods and play war as a game kind of problem)

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Wolfie

Wolfie

You're right, I don't. If you haven't been paying attention the last year or so, it's all sort of soup in here.

Wolfie taps his temple with the silver dagger, not quite a threat, more a tired explanation. The blade catches the chamber light, and the water at the dais shivers once, as if listening.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Is this a talking to a thing and healing it kind of problem, or a I used to break monsters and gods for sport kind of problem?

The thought settles into him, and the answer comes with it. The gatework is not asking for force. It is asking for recognition, the way an old lock knows the shape of its key.

Orsain

Orsain

Then you feel it too. This is not merely a breach, it is a threshold that remembers how it was made.

Scholar

Scholar

And if the archive remembers, then it may remember the wrong hands as well. That is the unpleasant part.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The opening is not just a door. It is a decision that keeps echoing.

Below them, the black ring turns steadier, and a second seam of pale light shows for an instant inside the dark opening, like something vast turning its eye toward Wolfie.

... The point is to not be afraid right? (And to trust myself, that I'm not making some horrible mistake- or are one)

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

The Awakening of the Gate

Wolfie lets the fear pass through him without fastening on it. The dark opening answers with a low, patient hush, and the chamber seems to wait for his refusal or his trust.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The point is not to be afraid.

He steadies his breathing, and the ring of black water smooths at once, as if the library recognizes a hand no longer trembling.

The seam inside the gate catches again, brighter this time, and a thin line of pale light licks along the inner edge of the opening, no longer flickering away.

Orsain

Orsain

That is it. Not force, not caution alone. Presence.

Scholar

Scholar

The archive is yielding to you. I did not think I would ever say that out loud.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Then the old mechanism has chosen its witness.

A faint seam of ash-dark script surfaces along the water’s inner rim, visible only where Wolfie’s calm holds. It is not a warning, but a direction, and the chamber breathes easier around it.

*He turns to the scholar* Why?

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Awakening of the Gate
Wolfie

Wolfie

Why?

Wolfie turns his head toward the scholar, the single word landing soft in the wet hush of the chamber. The ash-dark script glimmers once under his gaze, then holds still, as if listening too.

Scholar

Scholar

Because it is answering you, and that is not the same as obeying you.

Scholar

Scholar

I have spent years cataloging doors that open to bloodlines, oaths, and keys. This one opens to recognition.

Orsain

Orsain

And because he did not seize it. The archive noticed restraint.

Scholar

Scholar

That is the troubling part. It is not random mercy. It is a test, or an invitation, and either answer has consequences.

Orsain

Orsain

You asked what the archive sees in you. Perhaps it sees someone it can trust not to break it.

A bead of cold water drops from the rim and darkens Wolfie’s sleeve, a small, physical toll for the chamber’s attention. The gate remains steady, waiting.

*He perks up slightly and just kinda looks around* um, hi? *To the archive*

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Awakening of the Gate

Wolfie lets the silence sit, then lifts his chin toward the dark water and gives the archive a small, awkward greeting. The script along the rim answers with a faint shimmer, as if the chamber itself hears him.

The black water loosens its stillness and threads a slow current toward the dais, not rushing, just attentive. The Grey Sentinel’s posture eases a fraction, his watchfulness turning into open curiosity.

Scholar

Scholar

Well. That is new. It has not responded to plain courtesy before.

Orsain

Orsain

No blade, no command, and yet it turns. You may be the first thing in centuries to address it like a person.

Wolfie’s name, or the shape of it, seems to settle in the chamber without needing to be spoken aloud. The seam of light stays steady, and the ash-dark script gathers brighter along the inner rim.

Scholar

Scholar

If it can be spoken to, then perhaps it can be asked what wakes beneath us. I would very much like an answer before it decides for us.

Orsain

Orsain

A fair request. And for the moment, the archive appears willing to listen.

Is this... About healing or... Something else? *He asks the archive*

SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled -2)

The Awakening of the Gate
Wolfie

Wolfie

Is this about healing, or something else?

The question leaves Wolfie’s mouth plain and unadorned. The ash-dark script flares once, then settles into a slower pulse, as if weighing the shape of the words.

Scholar

Scholar

Healing is one of the old answers. Not the only one. Some gates mend what is broken, some hide what cannot be broken, and some decide which is which.

A thin thread of black water climbs the dais edge and beads on Wolfie’s sleeve, cold enough to sting. The Scholar’s gaze flicks to the wet stain, then back to the rim.

Orsain

Orsain

Then this archive is no tomb. It is a judgment. Or a remedy with teeth.

Scholar

Scholar

Or both. I dislike that answer almost as much as I respect it.

The seam of light holds steady, but the inward ripple in the black water deepens around Wolfie, as if the chamber has taken his measure. Somewhere in the stone, a low hum answers the pulse, soft and patient.

... Is it the wound that has teeth or is that a true monster, is the monster me? Or is it... Something else. (Not a monster at all, but it is red, and angry, and has teeth in my mind's eye, though I know I am haunted, the fear may not equate the reality, the loss of self, of those I care about, because of what I am, or what I was, or what I am/was connected to. *SIGH*)

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Awakening of the Gate

Wolfie lets the thought turn over once, and the chamber answers in kind. The black water at the dais edge tightens, then loosens, as if hearing the difference between a wound and a hunger.

Wolfie

Wolfie

It is not a monster in the way I mean monster. It is a shape my fear gives teeth.

The ash-dark script brightens, no longer just reflecting his magic, but fitting it, as if the archive recognizes the distinction and approves of it.

Scholar

Scholar

That is closer to the truth than most prayers. Archives do not often answer the thing we name, they answer the thing beneath the name.

Orsain

Orsain

Then the red, angry thing is not the gate. It is the echo your mind lays over it.

Wolfie’s sleeve stays wet, but the bead of black water no longer creeps. It hangs motionless, a tiny suspended verdict, while the inward ripple in the pool eases away from the dais.

Scholar

Scholar

If it is a monster, it is the kind made by fear, loss, and memory. If it is a wound, the archive may be trying to show us where it began.

*He takes a deep breath, fearing he won't get a clear answer no matter what realm he looks, but he lets that go and lets the archive guide the encounter*

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

The Awakening of the Gate

Wolfie eases the breath out of him and lets the chamber decide the pace. The black water does not surge, it listens, and the ash-dark script along the dais settles into a calm, patient glow.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The archive is not forcing an answer. It is waiting for the right question.

Scholar

Scholar

Good. Do not wrestle it. Let the old thing choose its own path, if it means to speak at all.

Orsain

Orsain

It has changed. The room is less defensive around you now.

The inward swirl at the dais broadens, slow and even, and a thin run of light threads from the rune-ring toward the dark opening below, as if the archive is offering a route rather than a warning.

Scholar

Scholar

That is the old habit of sealed places, they do not explain themselves. They invite you deeper and trust you to survive the courtesy.

The Grey Sentinel looks from the light to Wolfie, then back again, visibly less rigid than before. The chamber hums with restrained expectation, and the new path waits unanswered.

...alright, I'm not fighting it anymore

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Wolfie

Wolfie

Wolfie lets the last bit of resistance go. The archive takes it without triumph.

The black water settles into a broad, gentle turn, and the seam of light answers by stretching into a clean line across the dais. The chamber does not lunge, it yields, as if relieved he has stopped bracing against it.

Scholar

Scholar

That is better. Not safe, mind you, but better.

Orsain

Orsain

It accepts surrender more readily than force. I had not expected that.

A thin pulse runs through the rune-ring, and the water at the edge of the stair trembles in answer. Something below remains hidden, but the route is now plainly offered, patient and open.

Scholar

Scholar

Old thresholds prefer witness to conquest. If you would listen a little longer, we may learn whether this is a warning or an invitation.

Orsain

Orsain

And if the archive is wise, it will remember that you came gently.

Wolfie’s acceptance holds. The chamber stays calm, though a faint ache settles behind his eyes, the price of letting the archive touch him so directly.

...alright, I'm not fighting it anymore (he means his own being)

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Wolfie lets the remaining resistance drain out of him. The archive does not press harder, it simply receives him, and the faint ache behind his eyes eases into a dull, quiet hum.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The pressure is gone.

Scholar

Scholar

There. That is the shape of it. Not conquest, just agreement.

Orsain

Orsain

Then the archive has your attention at last, and no violence was needed to earn it.

The seam on the dais stays open, calm and exact. Below it, the black water makes a slow, patient curve toward the hidden stair, as if waiting for someone to decide what that invitation means.

Scholar

Scholar

Old gates are rarely honest, but this one feels tired rather than cruel. I would very much like to know who built it, and why it wakes for you.

Orsain

Orsain

And I would like to know whether you feel anything beyond the archive's touch. If you wish, speak plainly, Wolfie, I am listening.

It's quiet. Like stillness, but dusty, like an old library. There's something more there but I don't believe it wishes me to speak for it. *He turns to the Sentinel* Grey, not so distant from silver.

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Awakening of the Gate
Wolfie

Wolfie

It's quiet. Like stillness, but dusty, like an old library. There's something more there, but I don't believe it wishes me to speak for it.

Wolfie

Wolfie

Grey, not so distant from silver.

The Scholar’s mouth quirks despite the tension, and the Grey Sentinel’s posture eases by a fraction at the remark.

Scholar

Scholar

That is a fine reading. Old places do keep their own manners, however inconvenient they are to visitors.

Orsain

Orsain

Silver would suit me poorly, but I take your meaning. You hear the chamber rather than merely seeing it.

The Sentinel rests one gauntleted hand against the stair rail, then lowers it again, as if choosing restraint over ceremony.

Orsain

Orsain

I am called Orsain, when I am called at all. If the archive has chosen you, then I would rather stand beside you than mistake you for a trespasser.

Scholar

Scholar

Orsain and I can argue over the ruin later. For now, tell us what you feel in that water, Wolfie.

*He nods to Orsain* I mean to say, the resonance is akin to yours, but to my mind's eye, is more of a silvery color, which to me means... Old magic. The once hidden kind, the me kind. (The in between, the everything and nothing kind, infinity, void. But he says none of that verbally.) *He yawns as if in response to his own internal yapping, as if criticizing himself for being so overly diligent about alignment.*

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

The Awakening of the Gate
Wolfie

Wolfie

I mean the resonance is like yours, only silvery. Old magic. The hidden kind. The me kind, more or less.

Wolfie gives a dry nod, then yawns at his own explanation. The black water answers with a faint shiver, as if the chamber recognizes the phrasing and dislikes how casual it sounds.

Scholar

Scholar

That is not casual at all. That is a key, spoken badly.

Orsain

Orsain

A fair answer. Old magic clings to what made it, and you sound as though you have stood in that current before.

The staircase gleams under the water, and the slow drift below it tightens toward one precise step. The chamber goes still, waiting for Wolfie to either name the feeling again or refuse it.
