Arus and Elizabeth slip away from the tavern door and into Flushing’s narrow lanes. Rain needles down from a black sky, turning the cobbles slick and shining, while salt wind drifts up from the quay.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

You do not get to vanish on me, not after all that. Where are you leading me?

Behind them, the redcoats remain under the tavern eaves, silhouettes in lamplight. Ahead, a lane opens toward the harbor, where tethered boats knock softly against their ropes.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

Keep your voice low. If you want answers, walk.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

Walk where? This is a foolish hour for riddles.

A gust blows rain across Arus’s face as they reach the quay. A small customs shed crouches by the water, its door ajar, lantern glow spilling onto wet planks. Inside, someone moves.

From the shed comes a rough voice, quick and tense. 'If you are looking for the courier, you are already too late.'

✓ Quest Accepted

Find the missing courier

Is the mysterious figure visibly identifiable in the shed?

NO, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 44)

The lantern light flickers, casting long, dancing shadows that obscure the figure's features behind a heavy, rain-drenched hood. Despite the proximity, the stranger remains a faceless silhouette against the gloom of the shed.

I will step in between Elizabeth and the stranger in the shed and face the open door in front of her and draw my rapier and issue a challenge, "Step out and identify yourself, rogue, or cross blades with an unforgiving defender in no mood for games!" (making it look good and intimidating, and maybe even chivalrous).

SUCCESS (Legendary Fencing, rolled -1)

Arus slides between Elizabeth and the shed, rapier flashing free in one clean motion. Rain beads on the steel as he squares to the open doorway, turning the threat into a challenge.

Step out and identify yourself, rogue, or cross blades with an unforgiving defender in no mood for games!

The hooded figure stiffens, then shifts back from the desk into the lantern wash, no longer just a silhouette.

The Customs Clerk

The Customs Clerk

Easy. I am no rogue, and I mean no fight. The courier passed through here, then vanished toward the docks.

Elizabeth halts behind Arus, one hand lifted at his shoulder as the clerk’s words land like a dropped coin in the wet silence.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

Then you know the way he went. Speak plainly, clerk.

Inside the shed, the clerk’s face finally shows in profile, pale and pinched, while beyond the doorway the quay lies slick and empty, waiting.

I will enforce Elizabeth's demands and say, "Answer her quickly and I will forgive you for startling an innocent maiden. Come, speak, man! Which way did the courier go?"

Arus keeps the blade still, but his voice cuts clean through the rain. The clerk flinches at the command, then swallows and points a damp finger down the quay, toward the dockside sheds and the lanterns beyond them.

Answer her quickly and I will forgive you for startling an innocent maiden. Come, speak, man. Which way did the courier go?

The Customs Clerk

The Customs Clerk

South, along the inner quay. He kept to the shadows by the lobster pots, then cut past the warehousing and the net stacks. I heard boots, then nothing.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

Nothing is not an answer. Which warehouse? Speak the name, if you know it.

The Customs Clerk

The Customs Clerk

The old cooper’s shed, lady. Or what is left of it. He was in a hurry, and so was someone else behind him.

The clerk’s hand trembles on the edge of the desk, and a splash of rain blows in across the threshold, dousing the nearest lantern wick to a lower, shakier flame.

The Customs Clerk

The Customs Clerk

You have my answer. If that courier is worth your trouble, you had best go before the tide and the dark make liars of us all.

I will sheath my sword and gently take Elizabeth's hand and ask her if she wishes to leave the clerk's shed in a hurry and walk towards the old cooper's shed.

Arus lowers the rapier and, with the blade now bare from threat, folds it away at his side. The move eases the whole doorway at once, rain ticking on the shed roof as he turns from the clerk to Elizabeth.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

Will you leave this shed in a hurry and walk with me to the old cooper’s shed?

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

At last, a plain question. Yes, I will, if it leads to something worth the mud on my hem.

Elizabeth steps in beside him and gives him her hand without ceremony, as if she has already chosen the pace. The clerk recoils a little deeper into the lantern shadow, watching them with anxious relief.

The Customs Clerk

The Customs Clerk

If you mean to catch him, go by the net stacks. The quay is open, but the side path is quicker when the tide is out.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

You hear that, Arus? I am not asking to be entertained. I am asking to be taken somewhere useful.

Rain slips off the shed eaves in silver threads as they move out together, the clerk's lantern shrinking behind them while the dark line of the cooper’s shed waits ahead.

I will lead Elizabeth toward the side path. Along the way, I say to her, "My lady, I think it's high time for some confessions. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Arus, and I am not a courier, but I will help you find the one you seek, if you will be so kind as to tell me the truth of what such a heavenly face is truly doing in such a dark place? I know a noblewoman's disguise in a dingy tavern when I see it..."

Arus guides Elizabeth onto the side path, where the quay mud drinks the rain and the net stacks loom like black sails. He gives her his true name with a diplomat’s ease, and the lie of being a courier falls away between them.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

My lady, I think it is high time for some confessions. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Arus, and I am no courier, but I will help you find the one you seek, if you will tell me the truth of that noble face in this dark place.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

A bold bargain, Arus. You see through cloth, mud, and bad manners rather quickly.

Elizabeth’s mouth curves despite herself. Her free hand brushes rain from her sleeve, and the swallowed shine of her fine dress catches a flash from the quay lanterns as she keeps pace beside him.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

Very well. I am Elizabeth Billings, and I come for answers my father keeps behind walls and ledgers. I am tired of being folded away like silver in a chest.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

If you truly mean to help, then keep walking and do not make me regret trusting a man who starts with a confession and a compliment.

Together they reach the mouth of the side path, where the cooper’s shed waits beyond a curtain of rain. The clerk’s lantern shrinks behind them, and the damp air tastes of tar, rope, and possibility.

Can I see any danger or conspicuous oddities ahead of us in the light of a bad weather night along a coast?

YES (Likely, rolled 46)

As they approach the cooper's shed, a flicker of movement catches Arus's eye near the structure's sagging eaves. A heavy, iron-bound crate sits abandoned in the mud, its lid pried open and spilling a collection of official-looking, wax-sealed scrolls into the rising tide.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

The Baron's missing courier did not just flee, he was intercepted.

If I look more closely under the old cooper's shed's eaves, can I see who or what moved?

NO (Likely, rolled 92)

Arus peers into the deep, ink-black shadows beneath the eaves, but the space remains stubbornly empty. Only the rhythmic drumming of the rain against the rotting wood greets his search.

I will tell Elizabeth to wait safely in the shadows while I cautiously approach open crate and keep my attention focused in the direction of the darkness under the eaves of the old Cooper's shed.

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Arus keeps his eyes on the black eaves and moves with measured care toward the overturned crate, the rain hissing on the shed roof. Behind him, Elizabeth takes the hint and stays in the gloom, her attention locked on the darkness as well.

Mud sucks at Arus’s boots as he reaches the crate. The spilled scrolls lie half-fanned in the wet, wax seals smeared and leaking ink into the ground.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

Official papers. Freshly handled.

From under the shed, a thin scrape answers the rain, so faint it might be a shifting board, or a shoe drawn back from the light.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

Well? What do you see?

Arus reaches the nearest scroll and the wet parchment peels free at his touch, opening enough to show a name and a shipping mark before the rain starts to blur it again.

The hidden space beneath the eaves stays dark, but now it feels occupied, and whatever is there has heard them arrive.

+ New Item Acquired

Oil lantern

Is there any form of hanging lantern or potentially portable source of light anywhere nearby?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 10)

A rusted iron bracket hangs from the shed's corner, still clutching a shattered oil lantern that swings rhythmically in the gale. Beneath it, a second, intact lantern sits discarded in the mud, its wick dry but its glass casing miraculously unbroken.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

A light for the taking, if I can keep it from drowning in this downpour.

Do I have the means to ignite the oil lantern quickly? Available flint and steel perhaps?

NO (Likely, rolled 81)

Arus fumbles through his damp pockets, but the flint and steel he relies on are nowhere to be found, likely lost during the earlier scuffle on the shore. The lantern remains cold and dark, offering no reprieve from the encroaching gloom.

I will draw my rapier an stand out of the shadows and shout through the darkness over the rain, "Come out of the shadows, THIEF, and show yourself, or die in the shadows where you hide!

Arus straightens from the mud and draws his rapier in one clean hiss of steel. He steps out from the shed wall and hurls his challenge into the rain-choked dark, bold enough to split the night.

For a breath, only rain answers. Then something shifts beneath the shed, a wet scrape and a startled intake of breath from the black space below the boards.

Unknown Thief

Unknown Thief

Aye, I hear you. Keep that blade steady, or you’ll stab the wrong man.

A figure crawls into the lantern’s weak light, one sleeve torn and one boot lost in the mud. He flinches at Arus’s steel, but he does not run.

Elizabeth Billings

Elizabeth Billings

So there you are. Is this the answer you meant to drag me into?

The hidden man thrusts a soaked satchel up between them. The seal on it is broken, and wet papers spill at Arus’s feet. The price of the threat lands at once, his shout carrying farther than he means, and a distant lantern glow stirs at the quay.

The chase stops here. Whatever is inside that satchel now sits in Arus’s reach, but the docks answer back with approaching light.

Arus snaps the satchel from the thief’s hands and keeps the point of his rapier on the man’s chest. With his free hand, he flicks two fingers toward Elizabeth, then down at the scattered papers. The message is plain enough without words, take the documents and keep them safe.

Unknown Thief

Unknown Thief

Easy now. I’m only carrying what was handed to me, and I’d rather keep my skin intact.

Elizabeth moves in at once, skirts muddy at the hem, and gathers the wet scrolls before the tide can claim them. Arus does not look away from the thief, but his ear catches the distant clatter of boots and the wobble of a lantern beam somewhere beyond the quay.

Elizabeth Billings

At last, something useful. Speak quickly, thief, before your friends arrive.

Unknown Thief

Friends? No, miss. Only men who pay for silence, and they paid me to run.

The satchel comes open in Arus’s grasp. Inside lie sealing wax, a clerk’s token, and a bundle of salt-spotted notes. Whatever this was, it is no petty errand.

The lantern glow at the quay brightens, and a voice calls out through the rain, sharp with search and authority.
