Arus rides from Pendennis Castle beneath his plain cloak, the Viscount’s authorization sealed against his chest. The Viscount Guard remains behind with the evidence, clerks, and household authority.

By the time he reaches the empty countryside road, dusk stains the meadows violet. A mud-spattered cart blocks the bridge approach, one wheel sunk crookedly beside the parapet.

Its driver is a lean young adult woman in a weather-darkened green coat and red headscarf, with a narrow face, watchful eyes, and mud streaking both boots.

Hold there, rider. The bridge has been tampered with. I am Mara Trevithick, and I know a shortcut, though it is rougher than the Crown road.

Mara points beneath the bridge, where fresh-cut stakes jut from the shallows and a plank lies broken across the crossing. Her cart blocks the obvious approach deliberately.

Mara Trevithick

The shortcut runs through the alder marsh and rejoins the trader’s road near the weigh-house. It may save your errand, if your horse trusts the ground. Those riders behind us will not wait long.

Beyond the rise, three distant riders appear against the fading sky. Mara grips her reins and glances toward the narrow marsh track, leaving Arus only moments to choose.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the abandoned weigh-house

“Does the young lady look like she'd prefer to accompany me on horseback to the weigh-house or beyond rather than stay with the broken cart?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 57)

Mara’s eyes linger on Arus’s saddle, then flick toward the three riders cresting the rise. Her decision comes quickly, though her jaw tightens at the cart behind her.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

I would sooner ride with you than wait here for them. Take me to the weigh-house, and beyond if the road demands it.

She swings down from the cart and gathers her skirts clear of the mud. Beneath the canvas, sacks and a locked wooden chest make plain what she must abandon.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

But I cannot bring the cart. Those goods are worth more than the horse, and if the riders search it, I lose the lot. That is the price of speed.

Mara slips the reins over her arm and steps toward Arus’s horse, ready to mount behind him. The cart remains crooked across the bridge approach, its valuable cargo exposed to the approaching riders.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

Choose quickly, rider. I can guide you through the alders, but every breath we spend here gives them another chance to take my livelihood.

“We are not so helpless as to flee from all you value empty-handed. Cut ourselves some rope from your cart's wares and we will secure your wooden chest onto my steed and transport it by horseback while leading it on ahead on foot together rather than abandon all you own here for scavengers and the world's vultures... Be quick and I will ensure they do nothing before we take the best of what is yours with us.”

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +3)

Arus Gandon

We are not so helpless as to flee from all you value empty-handed. Cut rope from the cart's wares, and we will carry your chest on horseback while leading the animal together.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

Then be quick, rider. Take the strongest coil, and leave the rest to whatever scavengers come sniffing after us.

Arus tears a stout length of rope from beneath the cart canvas while Mara throws back the covering. Together they drag the locked chest into the open mud.

Arus braces his shoulder beneath the chest and lifts with controlled force. Mara loops the rope around its corners, and his knots cinch the weight firmly against the saddle.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

That will hold. Lead us through the alders, and keep the horse steady. I know every patch of ground that will not swallow a boot.

Mara takes the reins while Arus leads the loaded horse from the bridge approach. Behind them, the cart and its remaining sacks stand exposed as three riders descend the rise.

The pair enter the alder track together, the wooden chest secured between them and the darkening road ahead. Hoofbeats fade behind the reeds as the riders reach the abandoned cart.

“I ask the young maiden if she will now reveal what the locked chest contains that is so heavy and of obvious value?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 64)

Mara Trevithick

Yes, but keep your voice low. The chest holds silver plate and clipped coin taken from a customs paymaster. I meant to move it before the search tightened.

Mara presses one hand against the chest as the horse picks its way through the alder mud. Beneath the canvas, the lock gives a faint metallic knock with every step.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

The silver is not marked, but the coin bears the paymaster’s stamp. If those riders find it, they will call me a thief before asking whose purse first went light.

Behind them, the distant riders reach the abandoned cart. One dismounts, and a sharp shout carries between the alder trunks as the search turns toward the track.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

There is the cost of telling you. They have found the cart sooner than I reckoned, and the chest is now the only thing worth following.

The horse tosses its head beneath the burden. Mud sucks at its hooves, while the riders’ voices draw nearer through the reeds and the locked chest knocks again.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

Now you know what you carry. If we reach the weigh-house, I can tell you who paid for it, and why the Crown would rather see it lost.

“I will agree to her wishes if she endeavors to lead the horse and it's valuable cargo as far ahead and as quickly as she can with her intimate knowledge of the narrow marsh passage ahead while I search earnestly for a true choakpoint or narrow bottleneck where our pursuers would all need to pass through or over a narrow point only wide enough for one horse & rider of any size my keen senses can identify.”

Lead the horse as fast as your knowledge of this passage allows. I will find a chokepoint where one rider must pass at a time.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

Then keep low and trust me. The alder track bends twice before the old drainage cut. I can carry the chest through it without losing the horse.

Mara takes the reins and urges the burdened horse onward, choosing firmer hummocks between pools. Arus ranges behind and beside them, reading hoofprints, banks, and broken reeds while the pursuers close.

His keen eye catches the true bottleneck ahead: an old plank causeway squeezed between a steep reed bank and black water, barely wide enough for one horse and rider.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

There. The causeway is sound, but nobody can pass beside it. Once I reach the far bend, they must come through that throat.

Mara drives the horse ahead toward the causeway, the silver-laden chest knocking softly under its canvas. Behind them, the distant riders enter the alders and follow the narrowing trail.

“I will allow Mara to lead the horse ahead of the narrow plank bridge and as soon as she is safely on the other side of the deep bank, I will pour out all of my lamp oil on the center of the plank bridge and light it with my flint and steel behind me, once I'm on the same side of the oil pool as Mara, I will light it afire and then run across the narrow planks before the burn into a blazing inferno that no trained horse will approach until it burns out completely, redirecting our three pursuers to some other long alternate route or to wait until oil fires burn themselves out and they attempt to ford the deep water and pull their mounts to swim across the gap in deeper depths than the plank bridge would've subjected them to...”

Mara urges the burdened horse onto the plank causeway. When horse and chest reach the far bank, Arus uncorks his oil lantern and pours a shining trail across the bridge’s center.

He reaches Mara’s side, strikes flint to steel, and touches the spark to the oil. Fire races along the planks, rising into a bright, wavering barrier.

Arus turns and runs. The causeway shudders beneath his boots, smoke streaming past his cloak, but he crosses cleanly before the timbers become a blazing inferno.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

Keep moving! There is an old fishermen’s path beyond the bank. It leads straight toward the trader’s road.

The three pursuing riders, three adult men in dark riding coats and brimmed hats, their weathered faces and gloved hands visible above the saddles rein hard before the flames. Their horses rear and refuse the burning throat, while smoke and deep black water deny any hurried crossing.

Mara leads Arus along the concealed path, and the loaded horse follows. The route emerges beyond the marsh, shortening their journey and placing the weigh-house within reach before night fully falls.

“Can the three pursuers be left far enough behind near a burning barrier long and far enough to effectively be far enough ahead as to be out of sight from the three riders before nightfall?”

YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 11)

The Tampered Bridge
Mara Trevithick
Mara Trevithick

The fire consumes the causeway behind them. Smoke blankets the marsh, and the three riders remain trapped on the far bank, their shouts thinning beneath the crackle of burning timber.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

They cannot cross before the planks fall. By the time they find the northern ford, we will be beyond the trader’s road and lost among its traffic.

Mara guides the horse along a sunken fishermen’s path. Reeds close behind them, swallowing hoofprints and cloak edges as dusk gathers over the marsh.

At the path’s crest, the land opens toward the trader’s road. A weathered sign points to the weigh-house, and beneath it a second track bears fresh wheel marks toward an unseen riverside loading yard.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

That lower track is new. Traders have opened a back approach to the weigh-house, hidden from the main road. We can reach the meeting place without showing ourselves to every traveler.

Behind them, the burning barrier dwindles to a red smear through the reeds. No rider appears on the rise, while the fresh track offers a concealed approach and a clear lead toward the weigh-house.

“I will check the horse for health or strain and ensure the wooden chest is secure if the lighter Miss Mara did indeed need to ride with it somewhere away safer than on foot with me. I will simply jest with her, "Don't steal my horse, or I'll be forced to hunt you down like a demon chasing you across the Earth. It is a sworn oath we riders of the Brethren of The Coast have lived by for centuries of delivering messages of great value across the realm, and to do so would bring you terribly accursed bad luck for seven lifetimes.”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +2)

Arus pauses beneath the sign and runs a practiced hand along the horse’s neck, flank, and legs. The animal is warm and breathing hard, but steady, with no dangerous lameness.

He checks the girth, rope, and canvas around the wooden chest. The knots remain tight, the weight balanced, and the lock sits firmly against the saddle without bruising the horse.

Don’t steal my horse, or I’ll hunt you down like a demon chasing you across the Earth. It is a sworn oath of the Brethren of the Coast, and breaking it brings seven lifetimes of accursed bad luck.

Mara’s wary expression cracks into a crooked smile. She shifts the reins carefully, giving the horse a gentler hand now that its condition and burden have been confirmed.

Mara Trevithick

Mara Trevithick

Then I shall ride honestly, lest seven generations of bad luck chase me through every marsh in Cornwall. Your horse has a better keeper than most merchants deserve.

The lower track descends toward the hidden loading yard. Mara leads the horse onward, while the secured chest rides safely between them and the weigh-house waits beyond the fading light.
