Salt spray lashes the rocks at Mount's Bay. Below the village, a narrow sea cave yawns open in the cliff like a secret mouth.

Arus reaches the rocky edge in time to see John Carter jam a shoulder against the stone, waving trembling fishermen toward the darkness.

Above them, boots hammer on the cliff path. The sharp commands of the Royal 25th Foot ring down through the surf.

John Carter

John Carter

Quickly, men. Keep low, and mind your heads.

A lantern glow flashes between the rocks, then vanishes. The first redcoats are close enough that Arus can hear their breath and the scrape of steel.

You there, Arus, if you've any wit in you, take the rear and hold the path. Do not let them catch the lane.

The fishermen hesitate at the cave mouth, one clutching a net, another staring back at the soldiers with white knuckles. A voice from above shouts that the village is to stand clear.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Out of the way, all of you. By order of the Crown, this shore is searched.

✓ Quest Accepted

Get the fishermen safely into the sea cave

Can the redcoats see me yet?

NO (Unlikely, rolled 61)

The redcoats remain focused on the path ahead, their lanterns casting long, erratic shadows that fail to pierce the deep gloom of the cove. Arus stays hidden in the jagged rocks, unseen by the soldiers above.

Sneak away from the cave towards the other direction along the beach, staying hidden in the shadows until I can call out from far enough away from the cave to distract the redcoats and create a diversion.

Arus slips from the black rocks to the wet shingle, but the stones betray him, clicking loud underfoot. Above, a soldier halts and turns his lantern toward the sound.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Who goes there? Keep your eyes on the shore!

Arus reaches the mouth of a shallow tide-pool and drops behind a rib of kelp-slick stone, half hidden, half trapped in the open. The sea hisses at his boots, and the lantern glow starts probing lower.

John Carter

Now, lad, there is a chain of black rocks to your left. Follow it. It runs to the waterline.

Beyond the next outcrop, Arus catches a glimpse of a broken line of stones leading toward a darker crease in the cliff, a narrow channel the surf does not quite reach.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Spread out. If there is a runner on the beach, I want him found.

The search widens, but the new channel offers Arus one slim chance, a lower route into deeper shadow if he dares the slick rock before the lanterns swing back.

Do John Carter and the fishermen have an opportunity to escape detection?

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 72)

The lantern light sweeps across the shingle, catching the glint of a fisherman's boot as he attempts to scramble into the cave. The Sergeant shouts, and the entire patrol pivots toward the entrance, cutting off any hope of a quiet escape.

I whisper to get John Carter's attention and silently gesture for him to continue escaping with the fisherman without me, and then I stumble out from behind the rocks concealing me towards the redcoats while holding my head and groaning in pain and pretend to be disoriented, and then LOUDLY exclaim, "Curses! I've been ROBBED!"

Arus lurches from the rocks with one hand to his temple, all swagger stripped away by pain. His boots skid on wet shingle, and he staggers into the lantern glow like a man who has just taken a blow to the head.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

Curses! I’ve been robbed!

The Sergeant snaps his attention off the cave and onto Arus. Behind that flash of certainty, the fishermen keep moving into darkness, hidden by the sudden scramble.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Robbed, is it? By whom, and where did he go?

Arus’s broken plea buys the cave mouth a breath of shadow. One of the fishermen slips fully inside, and John Carter’s hand appears at the edge of the rocks, beckoning the last men down the black path.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

He looks shaken enough to be useful, or lying through his teeth.

The Sergeant steps toward Arus, but his lantern stays turned on the supposed victim. The cave entrance remains open behind him, now half-lost to shadow and moving bodies.

I widened my eyes and focus on the Sergeant and say, "REDCOATS! Thank heavens you're here! Sergeant, I have been robbed! Pardon me, sir, my name Thomas. I am a messenger. I was carrying a sealed letter for Baron Billings of some great urgency, after receiving my charge from the merchant who hired me, an unseen villain struck me in the head from behind, and when I awoke, my couriers satchel was stolen! PLEASE help me! I must get it back!" And then I hold my head again and groan as if in agony.

He keeps his hand over the wound and lets the lie shake in his voice.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Baron Billings, is it? Then you will come with me and say that again, slowly.

The Sergeant lowers the lantern from the cave mouth and takes one hard step closer to Arus, measuring every breath for a crack. Behind him, the black gap of the sea cave opens wider, swallowed by shadow and silence.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

If you are a messenger, you will have a route, a name, and a place you were struck. Give them to me now.

It was on the cliff path, by the old spill of nets. I saw a lantern, then nothing, and when I came to, the satchel was gone.

Arus keeps his breath ragged and his story clean. The Sergeant’s gaze flicks to the path, to the rocks, to the dark behind Arus, and the weight in his face eases by a hair.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

A lantern, then. Not a blade. Not a crowd.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

Just a blow and a thief with quicker feet than mine.

The Sergeant grunts, half convinced, and angles the lantern away from the cave mouth at last. The dim gap stays hidden in the shadowed rock, and his attention settles on Arus instead of the tunnel.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

If you are lying, Thomas, your name will not protect you. Point out the place, and speak plainly.

Behind the patrol, a faint scuff of boots moves somewhere deeper along the shore, swallowed fast by the surf and stone. The Sergeant waits, watching Arus for the next flaw.

I fake gratitude and then ask, "So does that mean you will help me retrieve it?! THANK YOU, Sergeant! I will forever be in your debt! I simply MUST deliver my charge, or my family will starve when I can no longer get work!"

Thank you, Sergeant. If you help me recover it, I am forever in your debt. I must deliver my charge, or my family starves when I lose work.

The Sergeant’s hard stare loosens. The suspicion is still there, but it now has a hook of pity in it, and that is enough to bend his tone.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

A man with a family is not a fool, then. Show me where this thief struck, and I will see what can be done.

Behind his shoulder, the patrol’s lantern-light wavers along the rocks, while the cave mouth stays dark and patient. The men hold their places, waiting on the Sergeant’s word.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

If the boy is robbed, he may yet be useful. If he lies, the lie will show in the track.

The Sergeant tips his chin toward the path and gives Arus a measured look, no longer only testing him, but ready to follow his lead.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Come on, then. Point it out to me, and speak true.

I walk along the path along the shoreline away from the cave, slowly holding my head and occasionally making small grunts of pain, and wait for the Sergeant to follow me as his lantern guides my way.

Arus turns from the cave and limps along the shoreline path, one hand pressed to his head. He gives a low, pained grunt at each uneven step, just loud enough to catch the Sergeant’s ear, and the lantern follows him off the cave mouth.

The Sergeant falls in beside him, slowing the patrol with a curt gesture. His beam drops to the shingle and the dark smear of wet rock ahead, where Arus has already led him to a false place of violence.

Arus Gandon

Arus Gandon

The tide has washed half the tracks clean.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

There. Show me the mark, and speak plain. Who took the thing from you?

Arus points out the scuffed stones and the broken shell line, and the Sergeant bends to inspect them. The cave mouth slips further into shadow behind them, left with only the patrol’s distant lantern-glow.

The act costs him a sharp twinge in the ribs from the hobble over the rocks, and a redcoat at the rear mutters that the story had best be true.

The Sergeant

The Sergeant

Keep moving, then. If this is a lie, I will know it soon enough.
