The Token and the Truth

The Inquisitor stops his pacing and turns sharply toward Enanita, one hand lifted as if to snatch the token by force. The bronze glints in her grip, casting a faint gold sheen across the dusty floor.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Show me the vellum. Now. If that token answers to you, then the rest may as well as well.

The Messenger tightens his hand over the wound at his side and leans forward, eyes fixed on Enanita. He looks past his pain, desperate for her to choose fast.

The Messenger

The Messenger

Do not hand it over. Read it yourself, Enanita. He wants the truth only after he has twisted it.

The Inquisitor’s gaze flicks to the open satchel, then back to Enanita’s face. For the first time, uncertainty cuts through his alarm.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

If it bears your mark, then it is tied to you. Whatever the Magistrate hid in there, you should know before he finds you again.

The room holds its breath around the open satchel, the split seal, and the folded vellum waiting in plain sight. Enanita stands at the center of it, with both men watching for her next move.

The Token and the Truth

Enanita lowers the bronze token and takes the vellum from the open satchel. The folded slip is thinner than it looks, its edges stiff with old wax dust.

She unfolds it carefully. A narrow line of script lies inside, neat and slanted, with a second mark pressed beside it, the same shape as the token.

The Inquisitor leans in, then freezes when he sees the seal impression. His grip tightens, but he does not reach for it.

Read it aloud, if you can. That is the only part he cannot steal back.

A faint scrape of movement comes from the floor, as the token in Enanita’s hand catches the lamplight and answers the ink with a dim, warm shimmer.

Well. What does it say?
