Adventure of Lilimeth Sullist 1

The library goes breathless. Frost threads across the table, and the shelves shudder as a tall figure in white steps through the wall like sinking smoke.

He does not look at Lilimeth or Elias. His gaze pins the tome, and the corruption in the room seems to flinch away from him.

The cold bites deeper. The far aisle darkens, then seems to empty, as if something unseen has been driven out of the stacks. Elias shifts between Lilimeth and the stranger, knife low, eyes wide.

Lilimeth snaps the cloths over the tome before the Herald can take it in full view. The fabric drinks the frost at once, and his reaching hand halts an inch short, as if it has struck an unseen pane.

Elias shifts harder in front of her, knife still low, eyes fixed on the Herald. The shelves answer with a dry rattle, and the far aisle caves into deeper shadow.

The Herald turns at last, not to Elias, but to the covered shape in Lilimeth's hands. The white of his sleeve trembles against the dark cloth, and the room feels the pressure of his attention like a blade laid flat against skin.
