The Folklorist drives the lantern closer to the loose board, breathing hard as he wedges his knife into the seam and levers at the wood.

Lilimeth gives him the alcove, stepping back into the dust haze while his light stays fixed on splintered grain and old nails.

Lilimeth Sullist

His attention is on the floorboard, not the stairs.

The tome at her hip pulses once, then again, a private heartbeat under her apron as she slips farther toward the basement steps.

Elias

Elias

There, yes, something is beneath this.

He shifts his weight, shoulders hunched in scholarly frenzy, and the lantern throws his long shadow across the alcove wall.

Behind him, the stairwell waits in dim silence, while his knife scrapes louder and louder against the trapped board.

Can I reach the basement door without him hearing my footsteps?

NO (Likely, rolled 75)

Lilimeth shifts her weight to retreat, but the dry rot of the floorboards groans sharply under her heel. The Folklorist freezes, his knife hovering mid-air as he turns his head toward the sound.

I let him inspect the floorboard

The Folklorist

Lilimeth stills her retreat and lets the moment breathe. The Folklorist lowers his knife by a hair, then steps back to the pried board, eyes fixed on the torn edge of wood.

He kneels. One gloved hand tests the gap, the other reaches for the loose plank, and the basement lantern throws his shadow long across the floor.

Elias

Elias

There, I knew it. Someone has been keeping something here.

The board comes free with a wet crack of rot, and beneath it lies only a foul little cache, cloth, splintered box, and a smear of old damp. No sigil. No hidden altar.

Elias

Elias

Not the relic itself. A decoy, or a trail.

The hidden tome at Lilimeth’s hip gives one hard pulse, as if answering the discovery, and the Folklorist’s head jerks up toward the stairs instead of toward her.

Elias

Elias

Well. Either I have been misled, or I am standing on the edge of something much worse.

He remains crouched over the rotten cavity, distracted for one thin heartbeat, while the stairwell yawns open behind him.
