Lilimeth leads Elias out of the kitchen and into the mansion’s library. Dust hangs in the air like old breath. Rows of dark shelves loom to the ceiling, and the smell of damp paper presses in from every wall.
She sets the hidden tome on a reading table beneath a green-shaded lamp. The shadows in the room twitch, then stretch toward it, thin as fingers.

A dry rattle spreads along the shelves. Several books shiver loose, bumping against one another like teeth in a jaw.

The lamp flame gutters once. From the far aisle, something unseen shifts between the stacks, slow and deliberate, as if the library has noticed them back.

Lilimeth crosses to the sideboard without looking at Elias. Her fingers find the rag, the brass polish, and the little tin of soap from the cleaning caddy, and she draws them close as if she only means to tidy.

A shelf answers with a hollow clatter. Several volumes twitch free, then settle again, as though something far back in the stacks has breathed on them.

Lilimeth gathers the supplies into one hand. The tin knocks softly against the rag, a small domestic sound swallowed by the room's uneasy rustle.
