The black gates of Tartarus loom ahead, and the temple’s hush feels thin as ash. Hades faces them in stern silence, with Persephone at his side and Thanatos holding Sisyphus fast.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

You would not be so eager to punish a king if you meant to waste a lawful death.

Persephone

Persephone

Spare us your cleverness. Your petition is denied.

Sisyphus strains against Thanatos’s grip, then turns his sharp gaze toward the iron threshold as if he can already see a loophole in the dark.

Hades

Hades

No loophole. No appeal. Choose your sentence, or I choose it for you.

Sisyphus

Sisyphus

A king can still bargain with the shape of his own doom. A lesser mind would call that defeat.

The mourning chimes deepen. Tartarus waits below, patient and pitiless, while Sisyphus lifts his chin, forcing the room to witness his last gambit.

Pass sentence on Sisyphus

After a brief, private discussion between Hades and Persephone, they offer to release Sisyphus from Tartarus if he can complete a seemingly simple task: balancing a large boulder in Tartarus on top of a steep hill. Ares is initially shocked at the seemingly light punishment, but Hades and Persephone assure him that it is not as light as it seems, and they invite him to watch. Just when it looks like Sisyphus is about to reach the top, the boulder rolls all the way back down the hill, forcing him to start over from the beginning. After this repeats a few times, Ares realizes that the boulder will NEVER stay perfectly balanced on the hill, effectively condemning Sisyphus to repeat the same pointless labor over and over again for eternity.

Ares watches the first climb from the black rim of Tartarus. Below, Sisyphus drives the boulder upward, shoulders shaking, every step purchased in silence. Thanatos and Hades stand apart, letting the mountain answer for them.

Hades

Hades

It is simple only to those who never try to finish it.

Persephone

Persephone

There is no summit that keeps its shape for him. That is the sentence.

The stone reaches the crest. For one bright breath, it balances, and Sisyphus goes still with triumph.

Then the boulder slips. It crashes back into the dark below, dragging the king’s hope with it.

A second ascent begins, then a third, each ending the same way. The hill does not change, but Sisyphus does, his certainty thinning with every fall.

Ares

Ares

It never stays.

Hades turns his gaze to Ares, grave and patient, as if inviting him to understand the mercy inside the cruelty. Beyond them, Sisyphus drags himself toward the slope again, and the boulder waits for the next impossible climb.

Thanatos
Thanatos

Ares glances toward the shimmering veil of the afterlife, where a familiar, weary silhouette lingers at the edge of the light. Valintal stands apart from the living, his form translucent yet steady, watching the cycle of the king with a quiet, knowing gaze.

Thanatos

Thanatos

He earned his rest, Ares. It is only fitting that he sees the justice he helped secure.

Ares

Ares

He is finally at peace, and he remains to witness the end of the man who broke the world.

Valintal stood when the rest of us were breaking. He chose the cost, and he kept it.

The words fall into the hush of the temple, plain and hard. The dim gold on the veil trembles, and the shade of Valintal steadies as if it has been named correctly at last.

Thanatos

Thanatos

Then let his name remain unshaken. He is seen here, and that is more than most mortals are given.

Thanatos lowers his chin, pain softening into solemn approval. The effort costs Ares a breath, and the echo of his own voice stings his throat in the cold temple air.

Hades

Hades

Justice remembers the faithful, even when the faithful are few.

At that, Hades turns his dark gaze toward the slope where Sisyphus labors. The king’s shoulders sag beneath the stone, and the finality of the judgment settles thicker in the room.

Persephone

Persephone

Let the one who praised himself above death hear it plainly. Valor is not measured by survival.
